I have used the first generation Emerger Wading Jacket for many years, and have since picked up the Emerger II Wading Jacket. This jacket is perfectly cut for wearing over insulated layers in winter conditions as well as over chest waders. The pockets have generous room for large fly boxes, especially larger streamer fly boxes. The hand-warmer pockets seem to sit a little high in the jacket at first, however this is much appreciated when standing in deep, cold water. The accessory/retractor attachments are a really nice touch in the way that, when using a retractor, the accessories have a bit of a cover from the jacket fabric so that they do not snag on fly line and branches/bushes as easily. They also eliminate the need to wear an additional lanyard either inside or outside of the jacket to carry additional accessories "at the ready". I use this jacket when fishing in pretty harsh Wyoming conditions, including wind, rain, and snow. The jacket is an excellent wind barrier, especially when wearing a mid-layer underneath for additional warmth. Short of being Gore-Tex, this is an excellent wind and water resistant wading jacket, especially for the price. The design and features rival those of jackets at twice or three times the price. In addition, the L.L. Bean customer service and satisfaction guarantee is second to none.

Jacket blocks wind real well, kept me dry but just too short for a wading jacket. Can't even put my wading belt around jacket.

Rated 5 out of 5 Great Jacket
This is an awesome wading jacket especially for the price. Good sized pockets and well layed out. Definitely not as breathable as a Gore-tex type jacket but you won't find a better one in this price range or even for quite a bit more money for that matter. Sizing is spot on.

I returned this item when it arrived as it was anything but breathable. The lining appears to be rubber. It is probably great for keeping one dry, but useless as an outer layer unless one is willing to deal with perspiration issues. I like the look of the jacket and the deep pockets.

I purchased and used this item on a recent trip to Colorado. Was very pleased with the preformance. It never rained while out fishing but the wind was blowing most days and this jacket offered ample protection from the water spray off waves while on my 2 man raft and from the 10-40 mph winds we encountered. My only wish was that I would of had more pockets. But I can fix that on the next jacket I buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MattCO Great fishing jacket
I purchased this jacket in preparation for an annual trip to the Bighorn. I chose the XL and the fit is perfect. The sizing chart was right on for this product. The size is not extra roomy, but I was able to wear 3 layers beneath (polypro shirt, fleece pullover, Simms down sweater) w/o restricting movement. The wading/waist length is ideal. Pockets are very deep & roomy. The strech elastic in the upper back allows for superior freedom of movement when casting, rowing, or netting. I loved the fully adjustable brimmed hood. It tightened down so there was no blindspots. The jacket is definatey not breathable, but I was looking for the maximum in waterproofing and this jacket fits the bill. Kept me warm & dry on several frigid days. Very compactable & light weight. Oh yeah, and the price for a jacket w/ these features far exceeds the $300 to $400 jackets. I did my shopping and this one was the winner!

This isn't really what I would consider a "warm jacket" meaning you'll have to still layer with fleece during winter steelheading or in cooler temperatures. I would also caution that because of the construction, if it is warm and rainy, you're likely to sweat a little in this jacket. As for the construction and performance, I could not have asked for a better constructed jacket. Well worth the cost and has the perfect amount of pockets and features for my needs. I would feel comfortable putting this up against more expensive models, however just be cautious of whether you want a "gore-tex" type breathability or not because this jacket doesn't feature this technology and doesn't really breath well at all. You will stay dry and if you need a little extra warmth on days that are moderately cool, this will provide it to some degree.

I was drawn to this jacket because I needed a waterproof wading layer for frequent rainshowers and fishing in coldwater for steelhead. I also wanted to go with LL Bean due to their great guarantee and customer service.
I've had it out twice now while steelheading. The pocket layout is very nice and convenient to access while on the water. There are a lot of pockets on this jacket for such a small pricetag. Plus a nice rubberized cuff to keep water out, sewn-in tamers for the adjustment bungee on the hood, and a great system for holding zingers and other accessories. Velcro on both left and right chest allow you to switch the fly holder patch or use 2 simultaneously. The shortness of the jacket may be odd when not wearing waders, but when standing in waist-deep water, you will be glad to have it shorter. The zippers are not waterproof, but the upside is that they are easy to pull.
Overall a wonderful design with lots of amenities for the price, and it's kept me 100% dry so far. I have no hesitations about this jacket. Go for it.

Have worn the jacket for surf fishing January, February and March. Kept me warm (with a fleece underneath) and dry. Lots of easily accessable pockets.
