Rated 3 out of 5 by Htown7 Great lens but fogs; horrible exchange policy
Last summer I decided to invest in a good pair of sunglasses. I wanted an "all-purpose" pair for fishing as well as other outdoor activities, driving, gardening, or just lounging by the pool. I looked at several high-end brands including Oakley, Native, and Smith Optics before deciding on these. Having read so much about Costa's 580G (glass) lenses I decided on these over the polycarbonate lenses. While the lenses are very good, after having these for almost a year I wish I had used the $250+ that I spent on another brand. Below are the pros and cons:
- Very solid build quality
- Outstanding lens clarity
- Good looks
- Fog very easily. I believe this is due to the snug fit. These glasses literally "fit me like a glove" but there is no ventilation. Which leads me to...
- Exchange policy. This fogging issue was very apparent to me from the start. So about 2-3 weeks after purchasing I contacted Costa about how to facilitate an exchange. They have a model called "Brine" that has ventilation holes, and I was hoping that these would work out better for me. I was told that they have only a 10-day return/exchange policy (yes, 10 days!). The rest of the free world offers at least 2 weeks and typically 30-days. So I was stuck with these.
- Lack of versatility. These lenses allow a 12% VLT (visible light transmission), which is outstanding for very bright sun. And indeed this is where they really shine. However, here in Houston we can range from bright sun to overcast to partly sunny all in an afternoon. In these more shaded conditions the tint can be a little dark.
In summary, I think these glasses are good for one thing, and that's being outside in very bright light. The fogging problem I had is not the fault of the glasses as much as just the way they fit my face. So my problem is really with Costa's exchange policy. While they have quality sunglasses, they lost a customer because I'm not going to risk another $260 "experiment" with their glasses.
Additionally, I just had a birthday and my wife gave me a pair of polarized lenses from one of the other manufacturers I had considered last year. After using these I can say that the lens quality is equal or better than my Costas, plus this model allows for changing out the lenses for different conditions. Also, no fogging, and a 90-DAY RETURN/EXCHANGE POLICY! Now THAT is standing behind your product.
I have no idea why Costa will not stand behind their product for more than 10 days, because they are high quality glasses. But unfortunately their policy would prevent me from ever trying them again.

This is the best pair of fishing glasses I could find. The fit, construction and lens quality leave nothing to be missed.
I went with the gray base, blue reflection lens of the many options.

The glasses were too small and are the largest LL Bean offers even though Costa sells larger sizes. I emailed Bean and asked them to consider stocking larger sizes

I recently received my Costa Del Mar Harpoon Sunglasses with the blue mirror lenses and am impressed with the lenses and the frames. Sadly I'll be returning them as they don't fit properly. I most likely fall under the small to medium category. These provide full coverage so they rest on my cheeks.
I"m hoping to get another pair of Costa Del Mars with the correct fit. They are just as great as the other reviewers commented.

Absolutely love these sunglasses - very comfortable. Have had them for almost 5 years and they are still like new. I may loose my keys or my wallet but I make sure that I don't loose these!!

I've tried many different brands Oakley,Vaurnet, Bolle, Maui Jim, 7 Eye, Serengeti, Ray Ban, Diesel ect... I lost my favorites sunglasses jet skiiing last year. They were the Serengeti Summit's with vermillion lenses and the flash coating. They were nice and bright to look through and cut glare very well. I had them for 5 or 6 years and was devastated to lose them. I picked up the Costa Del Mar Harpoons as I had heard very good reviews from fellow fisherman and boating friends. I love them, they have a very similar frame to my lost Serengeti's which fit me great and the lens are awesome. Very clear and easy on the eyes with no fatigue at all. You can wear them all day. The polarization is much better than even the Serengeti's. Great out on the water, the beach, driving and knocking around town. I highly recommend them to anyone with an active lifestyle.
