Rated 2 out of 5 by MtnCamperNC Changes to Maine Cot?
I purchased this same cot a couple of years ago and it was a bit of a challenge to put together (very taut). It was firm and has remained so - has not sagged over time. This encouraged me to purchase a second one. This second cot that arrived in last week's post is much looser and the fabric touches the support legs when I lay down (I'm 5'5" and under 140 pounds). I'll be getting in touch with LL Bean to see if this is a one-off or if they've changed the formula for constructing this cot. I would prefer the cot to be a bit of a bear to stretch into place, rather than the sagging that I'm now experiencing.

Now that I've gotten older I needed a good cot for the fishing and hunting camps. I researched all the cots and decided to go with the Maine Military Cot. I was not disappointed in the least and am very happy with my purchase. I'm a big man at 6' 1'' weighing 280lbs with very broad shoulders and powerfully built. I give this information only to help you in your research as this info from others helped me in my decision making. I will itemize my findings for you:
Cot Length - Perfect. Plenty of room to raise my arms under pillow and feet do not hang off.
Cot Width - Perfect. Did want it to wide incase I needed to push up on each of the side rails and lift myself off the cot when my lower back is acting up.
Strength of cot - Does not shake of move excessively when getting on or off or tuning over. Feels very secure. Can set on the side rails with no problems.
Quality of cot - Very pleased. Frame and legs are incredibly sturdy. Fabric stretches tight as a drum head and does not sag but just a little. The complaints I've read about in reviews about the fabric making unbearable noise must be written by people who are extremely light sleepers and must find something to complain about. I personally don't find the noise an issue at all and I consider myself easily annoyed by unwanted noise at night.
Set up and take down - Quick and easy and had no problems at all with the end rails. However I do have very strong hands and arms. But even folks with less strength I believe would not have to much of a problem. Its mind over matter once you see how it goes together. Goes back in the carry bag very easy.
Great cot and I look forward to using it for years to come. Thanks Byer of Maine!

It is rated for 375 pounds, and I am 250, but the fabric is ripping.
Back it goes.

Ordered the cot as a portable bed when we have extra guests. It was easy to set up and appears to be very sturdy. The nice thing is when we don't need it, we can break it down and store it in its carrier bag. Very pleased with the quality.

This is a follow up to my April 2012 review. The cot has been used extensively since then, and has held up very well. Having said that, the noise level from the material has not diminished much in the last 7 months. If you can get past that particular quirk, I'd say your money was well spent. Someone has suggested mink oil or some such remedy in a previous review. I have not tried this, since, I wanted to see if the noise would significantly lessen on it's own. It doesnt seem to have changed much. Maybe a little. If they could do something about this particular quirk, I'd give it 5 stars, as, I have been quite pleased with the quality.

Enough already with the griping over how long and huge this cot is! No, it's not for use in a small tent. No, you'll be wasting your space if you're petite. This is a REALLY BIG cot for really big people!
I can stretch out on this cot as if it were a hotel bed. No tucking my arms under my body at night!
We have a 12' X 13' tent, and you might fill it up with 2 of these cots! And, so we've established how big it really is.
Yes, it's hard to assemble the first few times, but I've had mine for years and it still takes a little effort to put on that last end crossbar.
But, I still recommend it to anyone who is thinking they're ready to get up off the cold, hard ground. Big people, rejoice! You've found your next cot!

I can't begin to say enough good things about this cot. I know other people have complained about the noise and setting it up, but I barely experienced any problems with that. It's comfortable, easy to assemble, and noise is minimal when you move on it. Overall, it's a wonderful cot at a wonderful price.

I purchased this cot because it appeared to be a quality product. Be advised, the cot makes a lot of noise. The horizontal bars are difficult to insert into the frame because of the tightness of the fabric. The cot is very large, forget about getting it into a 2 person tent. The cot is very heavy, and difficult to move to your campsite. I did not like the horizontal bars, they stick out really far and I was constantly bumping into them. I ended up giving it to my husbands son.

I've had my Maine camp cot now for at least 5 years, and its holding up well. I camp 12-16 weekends a year and use this cot every time. There's plenty of space under it for storage, it has a handy side bag for the cell phone and glasses, and its a nice hight for sitting on too. Its large - make sure it fits in your tent before ordering it. Its very comfortable to sleep, no bars hitting your back while sleeping. It doesn't feel like it might collapse when you turn over either. The first few times I put it up, the tension was very tight when assembling it, but once together, fine for sleeping on it. The ends stick out a little more than I expected, and the end tie on the case has worn over the years. the surface of the cot has not unraveled or torn, and everything still fits together well. I recommend this cot to a lot of my camping friends, as it has outlasted most of theirs. Do be aware its heavy to carry long distances so its not something I'd take hiking, but for camping or a spare sleep space in the house it works great.

Originally purchased because I needed a solution for 2 weeks of sleeping on the first floor after knee surgery. The height and comfort of the cot was the perfect solution. Like any cot - it is initially a little hard to set up due to tension. This is easily resolved if you use a hammer as a lever to slip the end bars into place.
We have since used the cot for overnight guests and camping. It is just what we need as we move away from "on the ground" camping - but are not yet ready to leave the tent behind!
