Rated 5 out of 5 by hcabats GREAT size for middle school!
My son has now officially outgrown his Critter (now Explorer) Backpack...that he has had for 8 or so years since preschool for his winter gear...wasn't sure that this would hold as much as that one, but it is surprisingly large, but not too big for a smaller 7th grader! I liked the style a bit better than the larger Bean's Messenger Bag a little more sporty, so gave it a try (plus the black was out of stock until february)...SO glad I did...fit him and his stuff perfectly and he looked great with it on AND it will last him for years. His brother and I think dad now want one too! This bag is as great as it looks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by PEPJR Well made bag
Very well constructed bag with three simple areas for your office gear. A large padded section for your computer, a large open area for files, books, and other devices, and a small zippered organizer under the flap on the front of the bag.
There is one minor design flaw. The two pen holders are designed for pencils or narrow pens. Any pen with a rubber grip will either not fit or get caught on the very tight, non-elastic, bands at the top of each holder.
Other than that, a very nice and very protective bag.

I would be lost now with out this bag! I've had it almost a year in Dusty Olive. I use it everyday on my commute to work. Easy to throw over my head & shoulder and take the train into the city. I pack in this bag my lunch, meds, ball hat, umbrella, phone, ear buds, sunglasses, any important papers or anything else I need to get through a busy work day. Great bag, can't say enough good things about it. I have recommended it to many friends. Looks great too! Don't hesitate if you want a great bag that looks good, is functional and will last, this is the one to buy!

I bought this bag after buying a travel back pack. All the reviews were from men. I happen to be 5'8. This bag is incredible. I found the back mesh pocket great for a water bottle, book and a light sweat shirt ,all at one time. Holds all the extras with my 13 " laptop .
I would highly recommend this bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by snshapir Expedition messenger bag works!
I purchased the bag for my large HP laptop which fits like a glove.
The carry strap across my body protects my lower back from further unjury far better than a backpack - plus I can reach into it while walking.
Still enjoying figuring out all of its pockets for best arrangement of my gear.

Rated 4 out of 5 by urbanburner What I was looking for, but could still be better
Lots of space, good fit, nice material. Poorly designed water bottle holder. Wish there was a side water bottle holder, firmer back, and more dividers/pockets inside. Otherwise a good bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by J980 Lots of features in a small package
I was hesitant to buy this bag at first because there weren't any pictures of what the inside looked like. Now that I've used it for a few weeks I am extremely happy with my purchase.
First, this bag has a minimal profile but can store and organize a lot more than it looks. There are four main compartments for storage. The first is the zippable portion in the rain flap. Simple, accessible, and convenient. The fabric here has two layers so it should be able to keep the rain out and could easily hold 2-3 spiral notebooks if you're a hoader and don't use the other pockets.
Inside the bag there is a front pouch that zips up with two zippers. It has a main pocket with a few accessories on the front of it. Going left to right there is a keychain clip, a zippered mesh pouch that is about as wide and tall as a credit card is long, two pen/pencil holders, and a small elastic lipped pouch with room for about 6 pens/markers etc. The main pocket in this front pounch is about 2-3 inches longer than a checkbook and can comfortably hold items about 2-3 inches thick. This front pouch itself can hold quite a bit of loose material as well.
The main storage area of the bag is split into a padded laptop area that is about 2 inches deep and padded with what feels like neoprene and a main storage area that is about 4 inches deep. Both of these areas extend the width of the bag. I can easily fit my macbook, iPad, and notebook in the laptop area and anything from paperback books, to lunch, power cords, or even several textbooks in the front part. The laptop storage area has a velcro strap to cynch the laptop in place and the entire large storage portion of the bag has a plastic buckle on an adjustable nylon strap that allows you to tighten this section for walking without it bulging like a big sack.
Before buying it, the part of this bag that most concerned me is the padded portion of the back that holds water bottles. The straps that hold the mesh for the water bottles in place are elastic but are somewhat loose. I was worried about this but it actually fits a Camelbak/Gatorade sized water bottle perfectly on either side. Additionally, the padded area between the water bottles is entirely open so it can be used to store clothes and shoes for the gym quite easily. It's designed with a vertical fold near each of the water bottle mesh part that can function like dividers but also allow the flexibility of a lot of storage. When walking, the padded section of the back of this bag makes it very comfortable to walk even longer distances.
Finally, the straps on this bag are great! There's an integrated adjustable shoulder strap with a very comfortable moveable pad and a handle at the top of the bag that looks like a short length of climbing rope. Both feel very sturdy and the shoulder strap feels very comfortable even with a lot of weight in the bag. Also, I'm fairly tall (6'3") and this bag could easily adjust to fit someone taller (like 6'6" or so).
So to summarize this bag is fantastic! It's spacious while not being bulky, has lots of pockets and storage space without feeling cluttered, and very sturdy with the quality I've grown to expect out of LL Bean over the last 25 years that I've owned their bags.
