Rated 4 out of 5áby chairwoman Nothing comparable, might be improved
I am chairwoman's husband. The LLBean Gore-Tex Stowaway Coat is a unique match for what I have looked for, and after two months, my impression has gotten even better from a good first impression. I wanted knee-length and Gore-Tex, I know of no other such garment. It might seem pricy, but the value for the price is excellent. The fabric seems to hit the sweet spot: heavy enough to seem durable and wind-resistant but light enough to pack compactly. Wearing it I only get wet from the knees down. I was concerned that if the length was too long, it might present a tripping hazard on slopes, but I have had no hint of such a problem so far. The zipper only reaches down to about 10-inches from the bottom hem, so each side flops separately with each knee. Because of this, my concern about the lack of a two-way zipper has mostly been no problem, and that kept me from a purchase for probably a year. I do think a two-way zipper would be better, but the lack is much less of a problem than I expected. There are velcro patches on the outer zipper flap, but those are too few and too small to be adequate if the zipper fails or is left open. I have never worn a hood more easy to adjust. On LLBean fitting charts, I fall closer to Large than Extra Large, but I gambled on Large for this garment despite the idea that I might include thick layers underneath, and am happy with that choice. In Pacific Northwest rain, it is rarely all that cold, and I have room for a fleece sweater, probably all I will ever need. Around here, the problem with rain gear is much more getting too hot than too cold, even with Gore-Tex. Venting options are limited, and that may turn out to be more of an problem than I have experienced so far. The hand pockets are about an inch too low. If bare hands are too cold, the length means gloves will be necessary and I find that a nuisance. I would like Bean to consider vertical openings on the side seam allowing the wearer to put his hands in his pants pockets with the zipper closed. Drivers in the dark in inclement weather find NW crosswalks filled with invisible pedestrians in dark rain parkas, and I intended to clench my teeth and order bright yellow. But then they came out with Stainless Steel, which is just the degree of visibility I hoped for.

Rated 4 out of 5áby ballumguy offers good protection but has flaws
I first used this coat for some hill walking in western Scotland this spring and it served me well in that damp and windy climate but I would expect some additional features considering the coat's expense: as others have noted, a two-way zipper would be a vast improvement, particularly considering the length of the garment, and an internal waist cord would offer temperature control for the torso.
On the plus side, the coat's compactness was a real advantage for packing purposes.

Excellent Gore-tex value. Stow-away-hood, knee length, perfect fit (small) and great for the climate I am visiting in the British Isles. Love the extra pockets and the ease of zipper use. I ordered the black and it feels as though I am wearing a very light weight dressy top coat.

Rated 2 out of 5áby geezershopper73 Stowaway Raincoat with Goretex
LLB sent me the new raincoat about a week ago. It was exactly what I ordered. Unfortunately, for the last 15 years I have had the predecessor of this raincoat -- a Goretex coated rain coat.
What I noticed immediately about the new one was that the quality of workmanship was dramatically worse. The zipper was cheapened into a single movement from an two way opener that my old raincoat had. The stitching of the new one was really inferior: double stitching replaced with single stitching; much larger stitches on the the new one.
I think that the price of my new raincoat was not very much more than what I paid for the old one about 15 years ago. Clearly LLB cheapened the product to maintain price. I definitely would have preferred to pay considerably more to get a top quality product.

I live in Alaska and use the this raincoat for wilderness hiking ......where my life may be dependent on my raincoat. I wear out one Gore-Tex raincoat every year. I have purchased quite a few of these raincoats from LLBean over the years. A knee length raincoat offers better protection than standard waist length raincoats. LLBean is the only company I know of that currently offers a knee length Gore-Tex rain coat. They have been doing so for at least 20 years. The current raincoat is generally well made but they have one serious design flaw and that is with the front zipper. Years ago, these LLBean raincoats were perfect. Then someone got the bright idea that they should monkey with the zipper design - maybe to save a couple of bucks on manufacturing costs. They redesigned the zipper so that it is too short and it has only a one-way slider.....the end result is that you can't seal up the front of the raincoat all the way to the bottom when needed. Another change is that they put the "storm baffle" underneath the zipper (instead of on the top side of the zipper like Helly Hansen and most other raincoat manufacturers would do) which makes the zipper less waterproof in driving rain. They deleted most of the snaps on the outer storm flap and replaced them with Velcro........ at intervals that are now too far apart.
In recent years, I have had to install snaps in between the existing Velcro on the front zipper closure. Then I have to sew an additional 10-inch long zipper underneath the existing zipper.... so that I can close up the front of the raincoat all the way to the bottom during high winds and driven rain.
LLBean, why don't you fix the front closure on this raincoat and be done with it? Then this would be a good back packing raincoat.

I have had a Stowaway raincoat for many years. It has served me very well. Although, over time, the Gore-Tex wears down and becomes less effective. Perhaps newer versions of the technology will yield better. I just purchased a Stowaway raincoat and noticed a couple of things that have changed since my original purchase. It seems the overall length is slightly shorter, and the hand-pocket placement has been changed. I like the old version pockets much better. They are in a more practical place, they are oriented more vertical which is better for holding items, and the flaps over the top are better. Needless to say, I don't like the newer version pockets. For me, this is an important feature as I carry things in them.

My husband loves this coat. He walks during his lunch hour; we live in the wet, messy Pacific NW. This jacket is keeping him very warm, dry and comfortable on his walks. He happily tells everyone where he got his coat. Thank you for another great item!
