Beautiful, sturdy, very comfy, easy to make into bed, big and luxurious. Looks like it's from House Beautiful magazine! Did take 2 of us to put it together, but simple, tho' tedious. Be sure you take it up/down stairs in pieces rather than after put together! Very large & hard to relocate far because it collapses (as it should), but can move it easily around a room. It's an A+, and packaging was super. Not a scratch.

I am happy with my new futon--perfect for the screened porch at my cabin. Very comfortable--just wish there were more options for covers. None matched my look so I am having one custom made. Awning stripes like the cushions for the adirondack chairs would be nice.

Easy to put together - you really do only need a flat- and Phillips-head screw driver. It looks beautiful! I bought the white and it really opens up the room. The mattress is comfortable too. For the price, I just couldn't beat this anywhere. And it easily folds from a sofa to a bed and vice versa. Well, easily after I did it once. If this were a shirt I'd be buying one in every color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Goldendalelady Quality Great on this Futon!
We are very pleased with our purchase of the Painted Cottage Futon. It arrived in perfect condition and went together quite smoothly. I heard no moans and groans from my husband who is the family handy-man who assembled the futon. No missing parts, Very high quality. Looks great in our guest room. The futon cover fit perfectly and with little difficulty over the mattress. Futon cover also very nice quality. We stretched out on the futon and found it to be comfortable, unlike others we have experienced!

Shipping speed was great, though you should be told upfront that you'll be receiving three separate packages from two different shipping addresses. You won't be able to use your new futon until you receive all three packages.
The unit itself is fairly well designed, sturdy and easily assembled with two people - you need a hammer, small standard screwdriver and pliers (not required but will make assembly much easier.
Negative: Mattress is all cotton fill so compacts and does not offer a 'bed' feel. Still has the middle support bar issue. I wish some manufacturer would figure out how to make that go away.
Lastly, my unit, while packed extremely well came covered in dust. Readily cleaned but it was a sealed box?
I do remain a loyal LLBean customer

CinderP So much better than what I could find locally
When we downsized over a year ago we gave up our couch and downsized from four bedrooms to two. We decided it would be nice to have a couch again, but we were looking for something that could double as a guest bed. My father suggested a futon because he has like other ones. This futon couch is so much nicer than what I was seeing locally and at a very reasonable price. I was worried it might be too mushy or too low to the ground, but it has a nice thick firm mattress and is the normal height of a sofa. I was worried about older guest being able to go from sitting to standing on a futon, but the solid construction, firm seat, and normal seat height put me at ease. Also, our dog loves it and there is plenty of room for two adults and one Golden Retriever to be on it at the same time. When she jumps off, it does not move! It took me about 2.5 hours to completely unpack, read the directions, and put it together by myself. Lifting the 70lb+ seat/back assembly was the hardest part and required some imagination and creativity to do it alone. (I used a rolled up old sheet to reach over and lift the front while I lifted the back and then walked it forward into the lower frame) The second hardest part was getting the cover on the substantial mattress. Both of those jobs would be much easier with an extra person. Also, with an extra person it could probably be assembled and in place in about half the time or less. The directions were clear and easy to understand.

As a first time LLBean buyer, and after reading all the comments, I purchased my futon. I was very pleased to receive items as quickly as I did.
It took my daughter and I only 20 minutes to assemble it. The only tricky part is inserting the clevis pin. Before inserting it, look at it, and you will see that the hole at the other end must be in the right position (perpendicular to the floor) to insert the cotter pin easily.
Just prior to receiving my futon, I got a change of heart, and realized that I should have picked the Mission Futon. I called, and was surprised with the kind response, I was told to go ahead and assemble the Cottage Futon, use it, being the Mission Futon is not available. Because they offer a 100% guarantee, I can order the Mission Futon as soon as it is back in the next catalog, return the one I have now, when the other one arrives!! No wonder, LL Bean has such a great reputation and devoted customers!

We purchased this futon for our beach house on Cape Cod. It is sturdy/ well built..in America i might add.. and very stylish! It certianly needed 2 people to put together.. not difficult..but hard to get the seat portion inside the arm frames without 2 people.. believe the directions when it tells you to leave the arms unscrewed 3/4 in. minimum to get it to go together. i love it.. very comfortable .. the only bad part is... i didn't the futon cover yet cos it's on back order.. but i will bring that in spring. An excellent purchase i think.

Assembly instructions weren't the best, but we figured it out. It looks amazing, feels great and we absolutely loved it overall... until my sister stayed the night. We both pulled the futon away from the wall, and tried to open it into a bed... then it snapped. The wood split at the roller and fell to the ground. The best part? Called LLBean this morning and its replacement is on the way. It definitely seemed like a defect, so we're anxious to enjoy a futon we were initially so impressed with and again we're in awe of the guarantee. We swear by buying everything you can from LLBean because no one backs up their stuff like they do!

Rated 5 out of 5 by llbeanshopperperson Great... just put pieces together first
Wonderful piece! I foolishly rushed through the assembly. Forgot what they were called but put the "wheels" on the "screws" backwards, which took time to figure out. Other than that, it was a breeze -- definitely takes two people to finish off. Looks lovely.
