I like this clock. It's awesome. It just came in the mail today, so I'll report back if I have any issues.
You can put back-up batteries inside, but it's meant to be run with the cord. I don't think you're supposed to just run it on batteries; rather, use the batteries in case of a power outage.
The cord itself juts out an inch or so behind the clock, making it impossible to place the clock flush with the wall behind it.
The clock has a nighttime glow that you can flip on. It's not visible unless the room is dark. Batteries alone will not activate it--the clock needs to be plugged in, in order to glow.
My clock came with a sticker across the front that left a slight amount of sticky residue on the clockface. The sticker itself peeled right off, and I removed the residue with a small amount of peanut butter. (Old trick my granny taught me--peanut butter will remove sticky residue, such as from a label.)
I probably will not use it as an alarm clock, so I can't comment on those qualities. Personally, I prefer to wake up to radio, which this clock doesn't offer. I can tell you that there is a volume selection on the back with two options for how loud you will be awakened.
I really like this clock--it's adorable, retro, fun, colorful, bright, and cheery. I ordered it from a gift card, kind of as a birthday present to myself, and I think it's just darling!

I really need an alarm clock that will really snap me out of a deep sleep and this is perfect in that regard. I have it set to flash the light before the alarm goes off and the volume on the loud setting. Being a person who has slept through many alarms in the past, I have not had an issue with this clock since purchasing it a couple months ago. My girlfriend on the other hand, is a very light sleeper. She absolutely hated my phone alarm which was jarring and sudden. With this clock, the light starts to flash (at first dimly and working up to a brighter setting) and usually that is enough to start her waking up process. It's actually amazing that an alarm clock can work for both types of sleepers, but this one does just that.
As for the aesthetics, I think the clock looks really cool. I was unsure my girlfriend would like it, but she did immediately. The light blue one that I got actually looks a little (I mean a very little) lighter than what I thought the image looks like online, but it's pretty close. I love the back-light on the dial because it's not excessively bright but just enough where if I wake up in the middle of the night, I'm not struggling for a phone or something to see what time it is.
Some people seem to say that the second hand is loud. I never noticed it until about a week ago and my room was unusually quiet one night and still barely heard it. Did I mention it's about a foot away from my head as I sleep? I've had much much louder clocks and usually really hate the ticking sound, but all I did was roll over and I couldn't hear it any longer.
I'd recommend splurging for the USB version, as it can also take batteries and does not have to be plugged in to work. It's unsettling to me to think that if there's a power outage or something at night, my alarm is useless. With batteries in it, though, I know I won't miss a beat. Of course there's also the added bonus of being able to charge your phone directly from the clock to minimize plugs and wires around the bed.
If there is any downside, I'd say add a radio to the clock. Something about waking up to the news or radio show I miss from my childhood. Still, I don't think that's enough to warrant a loss of a star. Great alarm clock, I'd recommend it to all.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the USB function only works when plugged into an electrical outlet. My reason for selecting that option was for a reliable back-up for power outages. Beyond that it does everything it claims it will do.

The Moom Beam Clock with USB port is an excellent product. It is quiet, has several useful options. I sleep through the less loud alarm, but the loud one wakes me every time. In the winter I use the light alarm. I like that I can charge my phone or other devices with the USB port. Best of all, I can read the numbers.

I needed an alarm clock and as long as I was at the L. L. Bean site I bought this one, though it did look odd and vaguely retro. I've had it for two years and I must say it's been excellent. Instead of jarring you awake immediately with an alarm bell, the attached lamp on the side flashes on and off with gentle illumination, and gets brighter as it continues. When the light has reached its maximum intensity the alarm bell goes off. The controls on the back of the clock work fine, so you can adjust light of the clock face, the flashing light and the bell sound. The newer models include a USB port, an excellent addition.

This is a great bedside table clock! I have had it for a year, and really love it! The light-up dial is very easy to read in the dark, and the orange dial light isn't too harsh. The sound of the alarm is my favorite part... a nice ringing bell sound, compared to the blaring beep from cheaper clocks that you can buy in stores. The ability to turn on and off the backlight is a nice feature, and the switch for turning off the alarm is easy to access when you are groggy in the morning!

It looks really nice. I wanted it for a long time, lured by the description of being gently awakened by a beam of light. The light is more like an emergency vehicle pulling up. It blinks on and off very rudely and is plenty bright. I would have preferred and thought I would get a gentle light that would stream across my space. It would be nice if the light setting were adjustable. It's true that the clock does tick rather loudly also, but it's a pleasant tick. It went out of my bedroom and became my kitchen clock. It looks nice and I've gotten compliments on it. After perhaps 8 or so years the minute hand stopped moving and it would no longer keep time. I tried taking it apart in an attempt to fix it but it's pretty well put together and no simple matter. It was time for a new kitchen clock so into the garbage it went!

Rated 5 out of 5 by themucker Wonderful alarm for those with poor hearing
I have had my Moonbeam clock for about 10 years and am happy with it. My 92 year old father was complaining that he sleeps through alarm clocks because he is hard of hearing, and has his hearing aids out at night. I bought him a Moon beam clock. He had no trouble setting the alarm. He called me this am, quite pleased that the Moonbeam clock alarm awakened him easily this morning, My 85 year old mother had been skeptical that any alarm clock could awaken my father. Now, she plans to order one for herself, as she is also hard of hearing. Thank you LLBean for selling a clock that is easy to use, and that works for those with hearing loss.

Love the style of this clock and the ambiant light it puts off, but you can hear it ticking at night. It was a light ticking sound, but I have to have quite, so I had to return the clock :(

This is my 3rd moonbeam alarm clock. Unfortunately the "new" model doesn't have the option to awaken with just the light, only light + alarm or alarm. Some of us don't need bells, just the light. Why change a good thing? Loved the option to awaken gently.
