I bought this going on 4 years ago and my youngest has done everything you're not supposed to do to a back pack. She sits on top of the back pack part with the handle up. She throws it out of the van or drags it out so that the weight of it hits the step and then the ground. She lifts and lowers the handle too much and she had something gross spill in it. So far it's doing great! It cleaned up easily and all the moving parts still work just fine. I am hoping it will last till she goes to middle school and will need a larger pack. My middle kid is much easier on it but now that she's a sixth grader she's getting too tall to hold the handle. She trips over the wheels because it pulls too close to her feet now, so she has to slouch a bit to pull it.

Do not buy this, it is NOT worth the money buy the bigger one it will last through Elementary school. I made a HUGE mistake. $20 difference is not worth it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Saltydog13 Quality bag but with design issues
I must say that I have always been a fan on the LL Bean backpack. I had one which lasted me all 4 years of high school in the 80's-90's and into my freshman year of college. Superior quality that cant be beat. This roller bag for my 3rd grader is very well made but there are two areas of disappointment. First, the handle makes it wobbley when my son rolls it. I am a very experienced traveler and notice that bags with this type of handle are not as stable as those with the two a rods instead of one in the middle. It seems to through off the center line and rocks back and forth more. He ends of dragging it on its side instead of rolling.
The second is the lack of water bottle holder. Since it is a must now for kids to carry and wate bottle with them it is inconvenient to place inside the bag as when there is fresh cold water, the condensation gets items wet inside.

Rated 2 out of 5 by MCK100 easy to use,
My 3rd grader used it. Halfway through the school year the handle got warped and did not retract after that. One big negative with his back is that there is no mesh bottle holder to keep a water bottle upright!! Can't remember how many times the water bottle tilted and got all the schoolwork wet!!

It was rather small! I wished the pink one came in a deluxe... I would only purchase this for a child going to the 3rd or 4th grade!!! Not a 5th grader...

My son is three and takes a lunch and several containers of milk to preschool each day and that makes for a heavy backpack. He is also wanting to be independent so this backpack is big enough for his school folders, two lunch bags, his blanket, AND he can pull it himself. He is very happy with the bag. I bought the two different styles of matching lunch bags for him and they are great. I do agree with other reviews that the bag is smaller then other backpacks so I recommend it for younger students Pre-K through 2nd.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ripjaw my kid trashes EVERYTHING
but still hasn't managed to break this backpack. No holes, frays or splits to report. Aside from the fact that it's pretty dirty and scuffed up, the bag is in good shape. Everything still zips and rolls as it should. It's still early in the school year though, so we'll see.
The wheels on this thing are great! They're smooth and durable, and they maneuver like buttah. I know this sounds crazy, but I saw a bunch of other kids at school taking turns and running around with it. Looked like they were running an obstacle course or using it as a wheelbarrow or something. My kid reports that everyone digs how well it rolls and steers.
I got lucky and got this backpack at a deep discount, so for me, this purchase represents an unbelievable value. I'm not sure if I'd buy it at regular price, though. The deciding factor here will be the bag's durability. If it makes it through the whole school year, it's absolutely worth full price and I will gladly buy another.
PS: The kid will be in fourth grade next year, and will definitely need the larger capacity model.

Rated 4 out of 5 by ceomom703 Great for younger elementary kids
Just got this for my son entering the 3rd grade. It is the right size for him now but I imagine it may be too small for higher grades when he will have more books/binders to bring home.
We were hoping to get the Critter Pack with the shark but it's no loger offered so this is the best next thing.
Great for travel - just enough room for his carry-on items. The flap over the zipper is a little annoying but it will keep rain out so it's good to have.
With the Bean guarantee, you can't go wrong if you buy it for younger users.

I chose this backpack for my 3rd grader & the rolling deluxe backpack for my 4th grader. By the time I packed a folder, lunch box & water bottle into this backpack, nothing else would fit! I will be returning this one for another rolling deluxe backpack! At 20% off, it's the way to go!! :)

We bought two of these for our kids last year, and for the first time, they have backpacks that were able to accompany them intact into the next grade. Not just intact, but in great shape!
Buying a new backpack had been a yearly thing for us, from kindergarten onward, but these survived third and fourth grades and just started a new school year for fourth and fifth grades.
These backpacks are tough, roll well, hold a lot of books, clean up easily, have strong handles, I just have zero negatives for them. The only thing my kids would change is my oldest would rather have purple than blue :-)
