This comfortable, well-designed backpack has proven to be an ideal gift. Monogrammed, and in colors which are their favorites , it's been well-appreciated by several high school-aged students. I use two of this model of backpack, myself. One is for hiking, sometimes with art supplies. The other has held many books and notebooks, over the years. At first, that one was used when I worked as a ranger. Now, it's used for taking along all I need, when giving seminars. After years of hard use, sometimes off-trail, it's as durable and good-looking, as when it was new.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Motherof2ndgrader Nice size
My 2nd grader was using a single compartment backpack that was no longer suitable for the myriad folders for school work that came with 2nd grade. This pack is the perfect size for a padded lunch box, one 2-3" accordion folder with books and papers and additional knick-knacks. My daughter loves the water bottle holder on the side and says that the pack is comfortable on her shoulders. I'd rate it a 5, but we haven't yet put it through the test of school wear and tear (it was a Xmas gift).

Rated 3 out of 5 by jac7 Was Hoping for Something More Substantial
My 9-year-old, 3rd grade daughter requested (begged for) this backpack because of the color (kiwi--but it's really more yellow). I agreed because of the description.
"Larger version of our classic school pack, designed for older elementary students"--well, I have a problem with this. It's squat, with little height. Her 2" binder barely fits in the back compartment. We have to pluck the zipper from under the binder and pull it over the top to close the compartment. At our school, "older elementary students" are required to use a 2" binder. In fact, our 10-year-old, 5th grade son must use a 3" binder. This would never fit into this pack.
The binder does fit in the middle compartment with slightly more ease, but this means her lunchbag (admittedly not the smallest one--it's Bean's Flip-Top Lunch Box, which she loves) has to go in the rear compartment. It's bulky and not flat, so when we pack the bag this way, it feels weird against my daughter's back.
Don't be swayed by that photo showing all sorts of books in the bag. They're all pretty thin. 3rd graders and up are required to carry more than that.
With the binder in the back, lunchbag in the middle, snacks and stuff in the front, plus the water bottle, there is barely room for anything more. A small book, sure. But there's NO chance of fitting snow pants. I have no idea what we'll do when she has to bring shoes with her when she wears boots on snowy days. What a drag.
The zippers are very difficult. I'm not sure why zippers have a problem these days. It seems to me this should be a mastered form of enclosure in the 21st century. Certainly by LLB.
I know it states there is only one water bottle holder (dismayed why not all packs come with just one), but why not two? The one is a little snug but manageable.
Yes, I know we can return this item, but overall, she likes the bag well enough and does not complain. I think that may be because she wanted it so badly and doesn't want to admit it's not as great as we'd hoped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by HeatherWP perfect size for 1st grade
My daughter loves the color (purple), her name embroidery, and all the pockets. It is just the right size for elementary school.

Rated 2 out of 5 by verya might be the one LLBean lemon
Veteran LL Bean shopper and I can probably count items that disappointed on one hand - so good track record. I am disappointed with this backpack because both shoulder straps have ripped away from the pack at the shoulder. One is hanging on threads and the other is completely ripped off. The rest of the backpack looks almost new which is what i think is so odd. Other brands we've tried get holes in the bottom of the pack as it gets rubbed and wears on the bottom. Not this one! Pristine condition there and perfect zippers, but straps that came completely loose. This was used by my elementary aged son (5th-6th grade) so it carried a medium load - could have been lighter if he were younger, but not as bad as Middle school. I would recommend only for light to moderate loads, so early elementary and younger.

There's extra compartment for sweater, light coat, umbrella, etc. and at the side a place for bottled water or similar things.
The kid who have it was so excited she has plenty of space to put her school stuff.

I ordered this bag thinking it was bigger. Unfortunately I will have to exchange it.
It is very cute. Perfect size for a kindergatener. Durable enough to be a handme down as they grow. Lots of pockets for all their different activities. I love the materials and the no-catch zippers.

Great backpack for a 5th grader. Looks great, holds a lot, and isn't too heavy.

So far so good. I know I had a similar backpack that I still use today that doesn't have a single scratch or scrap on it. Therefore, I knew the minute my son went to school, he had to have an LL Bean backpack. I picked it up in store, had it monogrammed, and they shipped it to my house for free. They estimated shipping to take 4-7 business days but it was more like 2. We live pretty close to the store so that might've been the reason behind the short shipping time. It's the perfect size for my 5yo (he's around 43" tall). Good buy!
