Rated 1 out of 5 by FamLLBean Uncomfortable straps (rough, stiff & hurt neck)
We were so excited for this backpack to arrive and when it did, we *could not believe* how incredibly uncomfortable the straps felt! The straps hit too high and actually rub up against your neck rather than rest on your shoulders. The straps themselves are far too rough and stiff making the bag very uncomfortable to carry. We have been very happy with all of our purchases at LL Bean over the years. This purchase; however, was a big disappointment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Barnum Issue Resolved With Great Customer Service
These back packs are awesome! I am in Canada (Ontario) and I have continued to spend the little extra on duties/exchange rate to buy these back packs for my kids (now age 5 and 8).
For the first time ever I had an issue with my 8 year olds back pack and I just finished having a live chat with a customer service rep. I bought the pack in May 2014 and here it is June 30, 2015 and the seam has come loose from fabric just above the front zipper.
Karl, the online chat customer service rep, was awesome and returning this backpack was not an issue even 13 months after the fact (AND it was monogrammed too). I can order another and use the return paperwork in the new shipment to return the damaged pack for a full refund on product and duties.
These bags are awesome as I said and stand up to everything. Product AND service is worth it! Sizes are convenient too for what the kids need to bring back and forth to school at that age.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Elena Still without water bottle pockets...
I bought this backpack first time 6 years ago when my oldest child started Kindergarten. The only negative is absence of water bottle pockets. Nobody uses pencil holders in the backpack but everybody brings a water bottle to school!
Since then I wanted to buy this backpack on a couple of other occasions for my other kids when they started K but decided against it only due to the lack of these side pockets. Today I came to buy a backpack for my youngest and the issue persists after all these years. Many reviewers have pointed it out and sadly LLBean chooses to ignore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by sbbest Just what we needed...
I purchased my daughter's first and only backpack from LLBean when she started kindergarten, this fall she starts the 4th grade. We also purchased a matching lunchbox which is also in great shape. We now homeschool but she still carries both almost daily. We have had no complaints or problems with the zippers or pack. It washes well and looks brand new when clean. We loved her backpack so much, we ordered her brother one last year when he begin kindergarten. At this point the only reason we would think about replacing them is to get larger deluxe model to carry more books.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Soniat423 No water bottle holders?
My daughter picked this backpack based on the fabric print (blue surfboards), I did a quick glance and saw the overall reviews for 4.5 stars, and there were almost 400 reviews. So I didn't spend time reading the reviews. I wish I had! No bottle holder seems like a basic requirement for an elementary school backpack. I had it monogrammed with her initials, or I would return. We will be using this is a book/ stuffed animal carrier on car trips. I consider it useless for school.
LLBean, please read the many reviews that reqeust water bottle holders on this one! For a company known for quality, this seems like a major fluke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by stylishpractical One of the best purchases I've ever made
I bought this backpack for my son when he was in the 1st grade, because by then we had already gone through 2 or 3 cheaper backpacks. He is now heading off to middle school and this backpack is still holding up. It doesn't look brand new anymore of course, but there are no tears, no rips, no damage, and my child has not been exactly gentle with this bag. He's used it daily through 5 years of school, on playdates, sleepovers, when we go out, and on many trips overseas and at home. It's a good size with enough pockets and compartments for his things (only thing missing is a side compartment for a water bottle) and looks great. I bought it for $39.99 and it looks like the price is even better now. Incredible value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tennesseekelsey Can't beat LL Bean's backpacks or service!
I purchased two of these backpacks at the beginning of the school year for my boys ages 8 & 10. I had previously bought them each a junior size backpack when they started kindergarten, but wanted something a little bigger now that they are getting older. (The junior backpacks are still holding up after all these years)
Anyways, after using the original size for nearly the whole school year, I just noticed a 3-4" tear/rip in the seam of one of them. No big deal, LL Bean guarantees their products so I called to order a replacement and it couldn't have gone smoother. They let me buy a brand new one at the sale price I paid for the one that ripped. When it arrives, I will ship the damaged one back (for free) and receive a refund. LL Bean, you have just received a faithful backpack customer for life with your awesome customer service and your satisfaction guarantee. All 3 of our boys will carry only LL Bean backpacks throughout their school years. (Btw- the other backpack we purchased at the same time this year is still going strong with no issues)
Features I love- thick and cushiony straps, super durable fabric, fun prints, sturdy zipper, and overall excellent construction! These were made to last, and if not, they'll send you a new one. How can you go wrong!?

Rated 3 out of 5 by Soniat423 It's average
We purchased this one because my daughter liked the surfboard print. I didn't even notice there are no side pouches for water bottle. And, there isn't a little loop on the front (like our old backpack) to hang girlie decorations. If it were not monogrammed, I would be returning it. I'm giving it 3 stars because even with monogram it arrived quickly, and it is nice size and seems durable. We just miss the extra features.

Total number of backpacks bought for my 2 older kids from K-5th grade: 14.
Total bought for my youngest: 1.
I bought my daughter her book pack when she started Kindergarten in 2009, and if she hadn't wanted a more "grown up" bag for middle school she'd still be using it. It's a little worn on the base corners and has some permanent dirt on the bottom from the hundreds of hours it sat on bus stop streets, wet bus floors, and school hallways, but it's still in great condition and fully functional. Not a single rip, tear, fray, or zipper issue. She still uses if for occasional overnights and I expect it to last forever. Literally.

I bought this for my kindergartner in flower power print. I bought critter packs for my older kids when they started kindergarten (they are in 3rd and 4th grade now, and backpacks are going strong!) , but my daughter just loved this print. My only wish was that this pack had water bottle holders-then it would be perfect in every way.
It is a great size, she had junior size in pre-k, but that doesn't fit her coat, lunch box, binder, and everything she needs for all day kindergarten so I am happy I upgraded.
