Rated 5 out of 5 by ChrisAndMilena all around awsome back pack!!!
We bought one for our son the year before buying one for our daughter. The monogram is a great asset, no questions who it belongs to. They hold up very well to our kid's rough treatment, We have washed them several times with no fading or other problems. By mid-year the quality construction stands out against their classmates back packs. The vibrant colors make the kids easy to see from a distance. The quality to price is outstanding. We expect to get a least five years use of them. Spot on LL BEAN!!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by TwinPatrolDad Well-constructed, nice size
We bought these for our twin five-year-old boys for school. They are large enough to carry what they need but not so big as to be unwieldy. Our only complaint--and this is a big one--is that there is no side pocket for a water bottle.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Valleyblue Not just for kids!
The description for this backpack and all the reviews keep talking about how this is a perfect size for very young kids. Well, I don't have any kids and I am on the constant lookout for a small backpack I can use on a daily basis. Most kids backpacks are not suitable for adults in that I don't really want to walk around with a Spiderman pack over my shoulder or one covered with pink giraffes or race cars.
This one is a great size when I don't need to carry around a laptop and a bunch of other stuff. The organizer in the front zipper pocket is useful and overall, this will work for me.
I do agree with other reviewers in that it needs a holder for a water bottle. To make it perfect, a couple of outer pockets would be great to hold a cell phone and sunglasses. Kids could use them for something else, but a lot of kids have cell phones and sunglasses nowadays, too. My how times have changed.
If you're getting one of these for your little ones, think about one for yourself as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MamaByrne From Diaper Bag to Kindergarden Backpack
I have purchased three of these junior backpacks over the past 10 years. Each time upon the birth of a child. My children are now ages 10, 4, and 3 years old. I use it as a diaper bag for 2 years, and then once potty trained, as preschool and kindergarden backpacks.
I love the fact that these bags hold up through all the years. They NEVER wear out. We have never had a problem with a zipper or with the straps. All are heavy duty and stand up to wear and tear (and dirt!).
While not large, these bags easily hold all the essentials. When my kids were babies they comfortably hold 1 pkg wipes, a stack of 5-8 diapers, formula dispenser, and a bottle the main compartment. Pacifiers and antibacterial gel in the front compartment.
Once they hit the toddler stage, it held plenty of wipes, snacks, and sippy cups, plus a toy or 2.
Through preschool and kindergarden they hold 1 take home folder and a pair of tennis shoes, light jacket, or extra hat and mittens. They are not big enough to hold hold snow pants or other large items.
EASE OF USE
Backpack arm straps conveniently slip over umbrella stroller handles. It keeps things light and easy when traveling! As an adult I've worn these backpacks many times to keep my hands free. The straps do adjust to comfortably fit an adult. Also, once my toddlers were big enough, I did have them schlep their own diapers! They loved feeling "big" and having their own backpack of supplies.
My ten year old did want a bigger backpack once he got older, even though his junior backpack looked almost brand new. This would be an easy item to pass on to someone else, as I did, because it will hold up to years and years of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by 123zzzchristineb perfect for my pre-schoolers and into elementary s
My little one got this backpack as a 3 yr old and it has performed beautifully for 5 years! Looks practically brand new! She's put alot of miles on the backpack...a trip to Europe, the preschool days, elementary school, many pretend camping trips in the backyard, etc. Her younger brother has recently taken a liking to it as well. I would highly recommend!

Ordered for kindergarten grandchild. Not a lot of room for lunch, shoes, homework, show and tell, ect. I'm sorry I didn't order the next larger size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NWild Perfect for Pre- and Elementary School
I needed to find a backpack for my pre-schooler that would accommodate a folder and his sneakers during winter months but not be too bulky or heavy. The Junior is the perfect size! He is now in kindergarten and it's still holding up like brand new. He can fit his folder, large lunch pail, sneakers, and art smock in the large compartment with extra room for smaller items in the front pockets. The quality is nothing less than what I've come to expect from Beans. I suspect my son will outgrow it long before anything compromises the integrity of the pack. My old one finally started wearing through the bottom after about 10 years of use.

Rated 3 out of 5 by rjjt Very durable but...
Very cute and durable but beware when it gets wet the color bleeds. I bought the pink and the first day of school it rained and my daughter had huge pink spots all over her white sweater. At first I was very upset but they did wash out but still the color should not run!! Make it water resistant please!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by scru Perfect for a new kindergartener
Bought this for my 5 year old grandaughter for kindergarten. Just the right size so she won't hurt her neck carrying books. So glad that L.L. Bean recommends sizes of bookbags for age groups. Too many kids in ER with neck injuries. Quality is so good, I am sure her 2 1/2 year old little sister will use it when she outgrows it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Janaki Good backpack with flaws!
I usually love LL Bean products and this one is no exception. The quality of the backpack is excellent. It is the perfect size for my 1st grader. The design is cool and different. Why then did I give this backpack only 2 stars? Because of two things:
1. The backpack does not have an outside pocket to hold a water bottle. While this occured to me when previewing the backpack, I didn't realise the importance of having a pocket until my 6 year old started school. I used to put his water bottle in the front pocket, UNTIL the day that the bottle accidentally leaked and soaked the entire front pocket! In my opnions, kids backpacks should not be made without a pocket for the water bottle!
2. The zip mechanism on the backpack is "hidden" meaning there is a flap covering the zip. It looks cool but is a complete pain! Its hard to open and close the backpack easily. My son complained about this the first day he took the backpack to school and it took him longer than necessary to open. His teacher eventually had to help him. I have taken to folding back the little "flap" of fabric before unzipping. This helps, but only marginally.
Overall, I think I am going to investigate returning this backpack to LL Bean and getiing him another one from their collection that is better suited for us.
