Rated 5 out of 5 by texasally Backpack has lasted for 17 years
I bought my 28 year old daughter a deluxe backpack in 1996 when she was 10 years old. That backpack carried her through two years of grade school, junior high, high school AND college. Do yourself a favor and buy one backpack that will last for years instead of buying a lower quality pack and replacing it every year. I ordered myself the same backpack that I have been carrying for almost ten years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by jannie48 12 years and counting
I just watched my 22-year old daughter leave the house with this backpack, given to her in 4th grade, and I had to write to say this is an unbelievably strong, well-made and excellent item. It has gone with her through elementary, middle and high school, 4 years of college and now grad school, showing virtually no sign of wear. And I think it's still sold at close to the same price! Recommend without reservation.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MomShopper9 Straps to close together at neck
I bought this backpack for my 9 year old son who is small for his age. I am disappointed in how close the top of the shoulder straps are together. They are so close that they rub his neck leaving red marks and he complains all the time. Future bags need to have straps spaced further apart and also give the dimension width of the space between the straps so that can be considered for each child before ordering. Other than this, the bag is great. So, I only deducted one star. But, because this is such a significant problem, I deducted two stars and cannot recommend this bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by 45YearBeanFan SOLD OUT? Are you kidding me??
I am astonished ... I wanted to replace my sons' packs lost in a house fire, but have just discovered that they're not available, not even at our local LL Bean store. Did you under-order from your supplier, or are you discontinuing this item (please say it isn't so!!)? These are wonderful backpacks and my boys really loved their old ones (they held up for years) and so they wanted to get the same kind that they had before. Since your copy says it's your best-selling pack, I hope the lack of stock is temporary and that it will come back very soon! I'll keep checking ...

Rated 3 out of 5 by zameander room for improvement (no room for a water bottle)
My 5th grader is very happy with her new backpack. But while we made this purchase based partly on reviews attesting to this pack's longevity, I doubt my daughter will be using it next year. The straps are attached too close to each other at the top of the pack, which is somewhat uncomfortable. While we were aware of this design choice before making the purchase, future shoppers should really TAKE NOTE: the bottom of the pack is neither reinforced, nor made of a darker (dirt-hiding) or stiffer material. And lastly -- and how did neither of us register this fact? -- there is no water bottle pocket (no side pockets at all). I would love to see packs for older students/adults that have DEEP water bottle pockets (ones that will hold a 16 oz bottle), or at least a wide elastic band inside the pack to hold bottles upright.

Rated 3 out of 5 by meg1717 How did I miss that there is no bottle pocket?
Recurring issue with water bottle leaking or condensing into backpack (fault of the water bottle). But I really wish this had an outside pocket so it wouldn't soak schoolwork, etc. I don't know how I missed it when I ordered, but this is a deal breaker for us. Such a nice pack otherwise!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Wojiaomama Only one drawback
Overall, this backpack has been great. Bought one for each of my kids when they hit 4th grade, as that's when they needed more space to lug stuff around. My eldest is going on her 4th year with this backpack and it's still like new. Lots of well-organized pockets, and seems to distribute the weight pretty well. The only drawback is that there is no water bottle pocket. Since we often use these backpacks on weekend trips and family vacations, having a bottle pocket would be very handy. Otherwise, these packs are just about perfect, and well worth the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by carrymybooks Great backpack, but...
We love L.L.Bean backpacks and lunchboxes. That being said, this is the second backpack out of 3 to have a small flaw with durability. The first backpack my daughter used had the key line fray and come apart. The second has a strap coming loose at the top and actually separating form the bag. Not a problem, I thought when she told me. We'll just exchange the defective backpack. Only it now IS a problem, as the deluxe backpacks like she has are either sold out or on back order until December. Extremely disappointed that we are now stuck with a backpack that is coming apart.

Rated 4 out of 5 by galaxygirl good quality, no side pockets
my daughter loved the blue butterfly print and we opted for the single initial monogram, which she also liked. Her only complaint is that there are no side pockets for a water bottle, so she will carry an empty bottle to school and fill it at the water fountain. Great buy for the price.
