Rated 5 out of 5 by SarahWV BEST backpack ever!
I have had this bag for 15 years, and it is still in great shape. It has made it through high school, nursing school, and even as a diaper bag for 2 kids, and it is still in great shape after years of abuse. LL Bean makes such a quality backpack!

Rated 4 out of 5 by MarinaU Great backpack with one exception-no bottle holder
This is a great backpack. It is just the right size for a kindergarten-1st grader, looks great, and has held up very well through the first year of school. It is very comfortable and having the child's name or initials on it helps to keep it from being mixed up with others. My only complaint is that it does not have a water bottle holder which is very much needed. Without one, I have to put the water bottle in the lunch box, which takes up needed lunchbox space and is not easily accessible when my son wants to grab it to recess or at afterschool activities. I've tried putting it in one of the compartments but one time the water spilled all over the notebook. Adding a water bottle holder should not detract from the size or design of this backpack. LL Bean, please add one!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by COMommyof3 Great bag, but two problems
First off, we own two of these bags and overall, we love them. They are the perfect size for grade school and middle school (I don't have one in high school yet, so I can't comment on that). They have survived being used on a daily basis for school for 3 years, and also dragged around the world from Sri Lanka to Australia to Fiji and still look nearly new. I have washed them in cold water in the washing machine about twice a year and line dry them to get rid of any "ick" that the kids accumulate over the year and they have held up wonderfully.
Our problems are as follows: I didn't think we would miss having a water bottle holder, but we really do. The bottles get squashed into the main compartment and then sometimes leak on the kids' stuff, so I really wish there was an external water bottle holder. My oldest son has the backpack with the water bottle holder and it has made a world of difference for him as far as ease of reaching it and not having the leaking problems.
The second problem is that the zippers got stuck ALL. THE. TIME. My daughter would cry in frustration that she couldn't get into her bag to get her homework out at school, and I would spend forever trying to get the zipper unstuck from the foldover weather-proofing flap when she got home every day. We finally solved the problem by just permanently folding back the fabric from the zipper. It's no longer weatherproof, but at least the zipper doesn't get stuck any more. The fabric is stiff enough to stay folded back almost all the time.
If it weren't for those two things, I would happily give this bag all 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MatthewsMom14 great backpack-lasts years
I bought this backpack for my son entering the third grade (he liked the stylish print!) Last week, my son finished 8th grade still using the same backpack. The material is still looks great, no problems. After 6 years, one of the small compartment zippers isn't working well anymore. The rest of it is still in excellent condition. My incoming 9th grader is now going through a black phase so we are retiring the current backpack & ordering a new super deluxe black version.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Kelis Great and not so great
This was my first time trying a backpack. It survived the whole year except for the zipper. At the beginning of the year it kept getting stuck. So I had to cut it loose. Which meant a zipper that was no good. Now I'm contemplating buying another one for the next school year. Will the zipper do the same with this new purchase?

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lnit It survived the school year!
I bought this backpack for my 7 year old boy before his 1st grade school year started with the intention of having him grown into it. I also waited to write a review until it had some time in use (almost the entire school year). In Kindergarten he broke and tore 2 other backpacks from big box stores. His backpack does get tossed around a lot at school. They end up on the floor sometimes. He is pretty rough with his stuff so I really needed this pricey purchase to be worth it.
This one not only survived the school year and extended day program with no breaks or tears but only needs a quick wash to be 2nd grade ready! Worth the money and having his name on it helped it not get misplaced in the sea of lost stuff at elementary school. He only managed to get one of the zippers stuck and off track once which I'm sure we can fix. The only reason I'm back here looking for another one is so he can have a different design for Summer Camp for years to come too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by northnjmom Almost perfect
I bought this pack for my son before school started, it was on sale for a great price. The bag has held up very well, it looks practically new! My issue is the zipper. It gets hopelessly stuck daily and is very frustrating when my son can't get it open or closed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Jules721 Durable back pack
LL Bean back packs are very durable and have great organization. The only negative it there is no water bottle holder.... Please add a water bottle holder and this bag would be perfect!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Momisbusy Holds up, looks like the picture
My 10 year old son loves the back pack. He uses the belt to balance heavy loads in it and it is comfortable. It is not juvenile at all; I would carry it if I needed a backpack. Zippers have held up for an entire school year and the pack looks brand new even though it goes through a 4th grader who rides the bus and throws his pack on the ground to chase about anything that moves. We personalized it and the embroidery is sturdy and neat.

I wish I had read the reviews carefully before we bought this bag pack. My son loves the print, but we really need a water bottle holder.
