I bought my 28 year old daughter a deluxe backpack in 1996 when she was 10 years old. That backpack carried her through two years of grade school, junior high, high school AND college. Do yourself a favor and buy one backpack that will last for years instead of buying a lower quality pack and replacing it every year. I ordered myself the same backpack that I have been carrying for almost ten years.

I just watched my 22-year old daughter leave the house with this backpack, given to her in 4th grade, and I had to write to say this is an unbelievably strong, well-made and excellent item. It has gone with her through elementary, middle and high school, 4 years of college and now grad school, showing virtually no sign of wear. And I think it's still sold at close to the same price! Recommend without reservation.

My 10yo has had her LLBean deluxe backpack for a few years now. Perfectly happy with it. Durable, easy to use, showing NO wear and tear after 4 years of use. It was time for her younger sister to get a new backpack (figured I'd get her the LLBean deluxe, although huge now, figuring she'd grow into it) and I ended up buying a new pack for both kids. Wish I hadn't. The new design is awful. The zippers get stuck a LOT. Why did you remove the mesh water bottle holders??!! Such a disappointment!! Such a letdown from your prior iteration (which was perfect!)

I bought 2 of these backpacks for my twins. Never realizing there weren't any pockets to hold their water bottles. Only a month an a half into school we've already ruined many books putting the bottles inside the bags.
These days every backpack should have water bottle pocket.

I had purchased one of these several years ago, and loved it. Then I decided I just wanted a new one with a different color, so I purchased one. The back pack is identical... except the elimation of the comfort grip handle. When it's loaded the handle now cuts into your hand. Very disappointed in the new back pack. Will be returning this and pulling out the old one.

The thing I have always loved about LL Bean bags is the material. I know some reviewers seem to have had a different experience but in my own, this is a super-durable, no-nonsense material.
I also can't get over the size of the thing. It looks very small and unintimidating until you start cramming things into it and THERE IS ALWAYS MORE ROOM. The thing is like Narnia, the Bag. It's the clown car of day packs.
That being said, I use it a lot for travel and would appreciate more support - wider waist straps, chest strap etc. Its not SUPER ergonomic.
But for what you're paying, it's an incredible pack. Will definitely continue to purchase these - or would if the things ever wore out. Which they just don't seem to.
Good job, LL Bean.

We have purchased several of these backpacks and they never wear out. Our kids are in 8th and 9th grades and we still have the packs they started kindergarten in. Excellent quality and dependable year after year. We buy new ones every other year just for variety in colors. I recommend LL Bean backpacks to all my family and friends. This is a one time purchase that will last many years.

When looking for a backpack for school I really only went to one place. All my brothers had LL bean backpacks in the past for school so I knew that was the kind I wanted to get. My brothers and my parents had told me that they last for a long time and are great for school. So, my mom and I went to the LL Bean in Freeport and I got to choose from the large selection of backpacks there.
There is the ?deluxe? backpack and there is the ?super deluxe? backpack and they are both very good and similar. Although, there are a few more pockets in the front and on the side for water bottles. But , it is twenty dollars more than the perfectly substantial deluxe backpack, so I don?t think it is worth it unless you absolutely need those extra pockets. The deluxe backpack has a large pocket in the back that can fit many books and binders and things for school. Then there is a slightly smaller pocket after that one which is good for a pair of shoes or other miscellaneous medium sized items. The next pocket is smaller and features slots for pencils and pens and has little sub-pockets inside it that are great for calculators or small books. There is also a headphone hole and a key clip which I don?t use very often but they?re there. The final pocket in the deluxe backpack is basically just a small zipper pouch that is great for holding things that are small enough to fit but should not be lost such as a cell phone or a wallet. The small front pocket is great for things like that because it is easy to get to and you wont have to dig around in the pouch to find what you are looking for since it is not very deep.
This backpack?s shoulder straps will not break unless you put just about the weight of a couple cinder blocks in the backpack for a long time. They are also padded well so they will not hurt or dig into the shoulders when you wear the backpack. And the handle strap on top is great for picking up the backpack or pulling it out of a locker. The only problem with this backpack is that sometimes, but rarely, the zippers can get caught on the flap that hides them and can be tough to pull loose. But this hardly ever happens and is easily fixable.
Because of the quality of this backpack, it last a very long time and actually is great to use for things besides just school. This backpack is great for packing for a short trip like for the weekend. Because of its different pockets, it can fit all you need and then some. The first and second pockets are great for clothes and shoes, and the last two are good for smaller things like toiletries. I use my backpack for this a lot and I love it because I can simply wear my ?luggage? rather than having to carry or roll it. And one last thing that you normally wouldn?t think about, but this backpack, jam-packed full of stuff will actually fit in an overhead compartment on an airplane, so it is great to have as a carry-on item, and like I said, the pocket in the front will be good for small things you need easy access to like your keys, plane tickets, your passport, and other kinds of papers and things you need for the airport.
Although other backpacks may be cheaper or ?cooler looking? than this one, they are most likely less quality and would break much faster than an LL Bean backpack. The LL Bean backpack also comes in many different colors and prints that are great for both boys and girls. They can go anywhere from a simple pink, or blue, to fun prints like camo or flowers. You can also get the backpack customized to have your initials sewn on it so you can be sure it is your bag. I have not done this with my backpack, but some of my friends have an they say it is very easy on doesn?t take too long.
So, to wrap up, the deluxe LL Bean backpack is great for everything from school to personal life, and will last you for years of abuse. This bag endures a lot and you almost have to try to break it. It?s a great idea for anyone involved in school, sports, or semi-frequent travel.

Love this Deluxe Book Pack. My son is able to put all his books (and then some) in with no problems. Extra pockets without being excessive. Excellent quality, sturdy and has held up well - don't see it wearing out for many years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Bookgarden Where are the water bottle pockets
My kids have been using these packs for years and I refuse to buy packs anywhere else. Both of my daughters' Deluxe book packs are 3 years old and still function perfectly but they wanted new packs this year. The Deluxe book pack is the perfect pack except that there are no water bottle pockets. As my kid have gotten to be teenagers these pockets have become essential. We tried the Super Deluxe but it is way to much pack for anyone who doesn't have to haul a laptop to school. One child opted for another style and the other decided not to get a new pack at all. I would be happy to pay $10 extra to have water bottle pockets on this pack.
