I ordered size 34. The pair I received was labelled 34. However, it was actually between a 35 1/2 and a 36. Also. I found the pocket buttons cumbersome and difficult to open or refasten. Velcro tabs would be a real improvement.

These shorts are so heavy and clunky it felt like I was carrying lead weights in all the pockets -- which are virtually unusable because of the buttons (mentioned by several reviewers) that are nearly impossible to unbutton while wearing the shorts. If you don't mind taking off your pants to access your wallet, these are for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DakotaExpat Practical & sturdy, fit like a dream
With the heat of peak summer coming fast and several embarrassingly worn pairs of old canvas shorts (change falling from holes in pockets, tattered seams, and all), I needed new shorts badly. Thought I might try out some new cargo shorts, but with no experience in the style, I felt at sea looking around different web outlets with their variously informative pictures & descriptions. These Allagash Cargo Shorts caught my eye though, looking like they possessed the rugged quality & practicality that I was shooting for. I hemmed & hawed and dithered until the 90 degree plus days were upon me, made my order at LL Bean, and hoped for the best.
And three days later I knew from the moment I slid these shorts out of the bag that I had picked a winner. Substantial and sturdy fabric, yet supple to the touch, that wonderfully rich cotton feel that I desired, and an Olive Gray color that almosrt perfectly replicated the old Army surplus pants I used to wear baling hay as a kid. Even before I put them on, the heft of these shorts had me won over. And trying them on I confirmed a perfect fit (ordered the 33 inch waist & found it true to size, the hem coming to just above my knee -- I'm 6'3" tall). Just to make sure I'd have any shrinkage out of the way, I immediately put them in a warm water wash and machine dried them. The length may have shrunk just a quarter of an inch or less, hard to tell, but the waist and overall fit remained as true as out of the bag. I was sold.
But the practicality and smart design of the pockets is what caught my attention in the next several days of wear. Angled just right, every one of them completely accessible, and just enough of them (eight!) to accommodate all the needs I could think of while leaving room for the ones I hadn't come up with yet. I carry my writiing gear & mobile phone in the right cargo pocket, keys and change in one of the zippered pockets, my wallet in either the other cargo or right rear pocket and still have room for more. I could fit a sandwich in the other cargo pocket if I wanted. Even fully loaded, I don't look ungainly or bagged out with freight -- it all looks organized and ready for access.
The cleverly designed buttons on the flap pockets worked like a charm for me. Three minutes or so of practice at home before hitting the road and I found I could unbutton any of the pockets with one hand (left or right, depending on side), even while walking an easy pace. I found that buttoning them back up was easily done while walking if they were empty, but if fully loaded I'd do it more easily by stopping -- but still with one hand. I am very satisfied with that maneuver & much prefer the buttons to velcro. (Like those zippered inner pockets lots, too!)
And then the unexpected bonus: three days into wearing them I had a wait-person at a restaurant tip a glass of sangria onto them and soak them with a beautiful red color; she was very quick to get me some soda water to wet them, but it looked like they might have some permant stain -- threw them in a cold water wash immediately after getting home a couple hours later & they are like new, no added color at all.
These are a solid buy. Bean's description & photos give a true sense of the product. A handsome, useful pair of shorts, perfect for necessary carry when you'd like to avoid a bag or a pack in the hotter months. You can buy them with confidence. My new favorites & I plan to order more!

Rated 3 out of 5 by RamblinManVA I like the zippers. Hate the buttons. Stiff.
I bought these shorts mainly to wear to theme parks every summer because I wanted the extra pockets. What I found was that the pockets with buttons are almost useless to me. I look like a chump every time I need to get something out of or put in the pockets as undoing the buttons is difficult, especially if you use the rear one. I find myself using the zippered pockets a lot, but the entry is so small I routinely cut my medium size hands on the zipper when putting stuff in and out.
I wish the pockets had buttons.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Echo40 Best Cargo Shorts Ever
I have 4 pairs of the Allagash Cargo Shorts of varying ages. They have all stood up well to heavy use and frequent use. Simply put, best cargo short ever IF you are looking for a heavy duty, heavy fabric, large pocket cargo short.
Buy this short if you want a true cargo short with real expandable cargo front cargo pocket, not just a large flat pocket. Made of heavy, tough material like military fatigues, unlike most cargo shorts made of higher, standard cotton fabric. As some have commented, the color on these shorts does fade over repeated washings and time in the sun, and does not do so uniformly, but more in high visibility areas - however, this is not a flaw - that fading over time makes these shorts like a pair of jeans which gets better with age. The covered button pockets on the front and rear are excellent and I have not had any problems with the buttons.
Don't buy these shorts if you are looking for "dressy" casual shorts that will continue to look "new" - these are not the best shorts for you. Don't buy these shorts if you are looking for standard weight cargo shorts. Don't buy these shorts if you don't want to deal with button pockets - they offer significant aesthetic and usage benefits, but aren't always the easiest to manipulate, especially one handed.

Cargo shorts are a staple for me. I wear them year-round. As such, I?ve put in an embarrassing amount of work seeking shorts that satisfy on all counts. I?m happy to report that I?ve found them.
I?ve tried shorts from countless sources, from discount/big-box stores to higher-end retailers, mostly without luck. For my needs, I value comfort over trendiness and actually use all the pockets, which necessitates quality construction. What I?ve found is that one aspect typically comes at the expense of another, meaning that if they fit well - the quality is lacking; or if the quality is there, the fit is quirky. The flaws I?ve found in others run the gamut; inaccurate sizing, poor hip/waist to leg fit ratio, seams that blow out under minor stress, etc. Cost hasn?t translated to quality in my experience, either. Thankfully, I?m thrilled with the Allagash Cargos.
The cotton canvas is nicely weighted without being stiff, breathes nicely, breaks in fast, and launders really well. (with the added benefit of ripstop)
The sizing is accurate and the natural fit is great. Just enough room in the seat/hips, and comfortably loose in the legs without looking like culottes.
The pocket layout is an intelligent design. The openings are far enough off the seam to create a nice angle for sliding your hands into, and the depth is just right. I like being able to hit the bottom of the pocket without having to lean over.
The zippered pockets are unusual, but make sense pretty quickly. Having the ability to secure items in them is excellent, and I was pleasantly surprised to find them nearly as capacious as the regular front pockets they sit inside. I wasn?t sure if I would, but I use them constantly.
The cargo pockets are nice and deep without being cavernous, and the back patch pockets avoid the annoying bunching that internal pockets have.
The crotch gusset is awesome. I feel like I could do yoga in these shorts without having my voice go up an octave.
None so far. If I had a complaint, it would be that, with shorts like this, I?m expecting the hardware to be heavy-duty. Metal buttons and a more substantial zipper would be great. (large-toothed brass with a nice thick pull)
I haven?t experienced the fabric tearing like others have mentioned, but I?m not concerned. Even less so considering Bean?s generous customer service.
I haven?t had an issue with the buttons, either. I take a tube of super glue and squirt a little in the center of each button, where the threads cross. Hasn?t let me down. (I also do this with oxford shirts, etc. works every time.)
In closing, I recommend these without hesitation, and I hope Bean expands the color choices. I plan on ridding myself of all the shorts I own which compare unfavorably to the Allagash?s and will buy only these from now on.

Initially bought 1 pr because of some of the 1 star reviews. I had bought 6 pr of canvas cargo shorts many years ago and they were my favorite. When they became too embarrassing to wear because of all the strings hanging from frayed cuffs and holes starting in the side pockets and front pocket, I decided to go back to LL Bean for their replacement. No more canvas cargo shorts, but I did like the design and looks of these. I wear a 35 waist and ordered a 35 waist. It fit perfect and I love all the pockets. I examined the front button and it looked adequate. The left rear pocket I do not use and if you have been in and out of enough third world country airports, and even European, you will not carry your billfold in your left rear pocket, so the tearing of the corner of that pocket I cannot address. However, I do use the right rear pocket for my handkerchief and I am retrieving it often throughout the day. To date, no tears.
After wearing one pair of these shorts for one week everyday and two washing's I was very satisfied. I ordered 5 more pair and have been wearing them since. I wear a pair ever day with T-shirt (sorry LL Bean, I replaced the T-shirts with Duluth Trading). For dress I iron a pair and wear a polo. I have had no torn pockets or broken buttons.
In short (no pun intended), I love these shorts. I travel often to the Philippines and wear them every day there also. I would, and have, recommended these shorts to friends. I hope they last 10 yrs like the canvas ones.

4 out 6 pair that I own have torn on the corner of the left rear pocket or with one pair, the entire back end split open. I love the design with 8 pockets. I wear them mostly to go shopping or casual wear, never for working or hiking, which would put some stress on the material. I have owned 6 pair since 2014, and as of today, I am returning or have returned 4 pair, all with the same defect. I am actually afraid to wear the remaining two pair. I would expect better quality from LL Bean.

Not an easy man to please with clothes, my husband really likes these shorts. I admit I bought the coral plaid because they were on sale, and was surprised at how awesome they look and fit on him! Since they're 100% cotton, I'll most likely wash in cold and hang to dry, although drying in low would probably be ok (just don't want to risk it!)
He especially likes the thickness (pretty heavy) and lots of pockets. We go to the beach often so good pockets to keep things sand-free and secure is an important feature.
I was worried the coral would appear pinkish but it does not. The offer of the odd 35" waist is nice too.
He's very pleased so more will be ordered!

Rated 1 out of 5 by Texheavy Pocket seam torn after handful of wears
Bought these shorts to replace a pair of LL Bean cargo shorts I bought back in 2008 and wore everywhere (including multiple trips to SE Asia) with only the loss of the main button. After all those years of heavy wear, the cuffs finally started to fray and the material just wore too thin in the front thighs.
This new pair is of a different kind of material. Doesn't feel as durable. The zippered pockets have small pulls, one of which was torn off the zipper as I squeezed through a small doorway on the second or third wear. Then, a few wears later, I noticed a hole opening at the corner of one of the rear pocket seams.
Not sure what to do, since I go to LL Bean for durability, but that doesn't seem to be a factor anymore.
