Rated 5 out of 5 by Soup LOVE this pack
Great pack for anything. I have used it for travel and for work. All of the adjustable straps are easy to adjust even while wearing it. Even when stuffed to capacity, the pack still fits in plane overhead bins and under the seats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by rolferchic Its still working!
I bought this backpack for my daughter in while she was in Middle school. It lasted through high school, served as her carry on as she traveled around Europe AND she's still using it as a college freshmen. Definitely worth buying!
Prior to that we were going through one backpack a year, the backpacks from chain retailers locally are not built to last at all! We paid more up front for this one, but never had to buy another one for school. Great investment =)

Rated 4 out of 5 by dh65 Comfortable yet somehow not well planned out
This pack feels great, whether it's carrying a heavy or light load. The straps are comfortable and sturdy. The sternum strap is essential. The quality of construction seems excellent.
And yet I haven't fallen in love with this pack. I find that the different compartments aren't as obviously useful as I expected.
The main compartment, with the padded section for a laptop, is just what you'd expect: big, convenient.
The second-largest section is less useful because it's deep but somewhat narrow. It has a poorly thought-out organizer section with a couple of wide pockets, a cell-phone pocket with velcro-equipped flap, and a tiny zippered pouch. No slots for pens, which surprises me. If you put any load in the wide pockets they sag down and hang open. They're handy for things like sandwiches, packs of tissues, etc., but don't really serve the needs of someone who travels with writing tools or other business supplies.
The microfiber-lined eyeglass compartment is very nice.
Finally, there are two long compartments at the front, one accessible only by a long vertical zipper, the other accessible either by a similar long vertical zipper or from above by undoing the single plastic-buckled flap. Beats me what either of these sections are meant for. I throw my laptop's power cord in the larger one but they feel like a waste of space.
Finally, it's a bit frustrating that the only way to get anything out of the various compartments is to take the pack all the way off. Previous packs I've owned have been designed so you can take them off one shoulder, swing them around to the front, and get in to grab things. This pack doesn't lend itself well to that.
So I recommend this for sturdiness, comfort, quality of construction, capacity to carry a lot of stuff. But I don't recommend it for its ability to keep your everyday stuff organized.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DutchMaster Best school backpack ever!
I got this backpack for my daughter 3 years ago and it is going strong and should see her through high school at least. I am amazed by how much stuff she can put in there. It's like a clown car when she empties out her backpack. Pockets find a place for everything, not too specific but keep it structured. Works great for heavy textbooks, bulky binders, lunch box, gym clothes, etc. My son is looking forward to getting his for middle school too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by GFMom Just too narrow
My son loves this backpack but it is just too slim front to back. We struggled to get all his stuff in in middle school and now, with high school, forget it. If your child has to carry around binders and books (and a lunch), you just can't get it all in there without wrestling with it.

by TokyoRonin Good Design Poor Quality
When I selected the Quad Backpack, it was a toss-up between it and the Turbo Transit. I live and work in Tokyo and commute a lot on the trains. I am also a student and needed a pack to carry my laptop and books in so I can study on the go. I went with the Quad because of the padding for the laptop.
About six months after I got it the top strap began to fray and separate on the left side as seen in the attached photos. It finally snapped in early August. I will probably give L.L. Bean one more chance based on past performance of their products and swap it for a different pack. If the second pack fails I will have to quit them because the return cost from Japan is too high.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Sarah29 Best pack Bean makes
Had to replace an older Bean pack for my son, and needed it to be big enough and hearty enough to last him a while. I have fallen in love with this backpack! The little touches are the best part, like the way you can put the waist strap into a little pocket when you're not using it, or the fleece-lined pocket up top for sunglasses or your phone. I have purchased about four different backpacks/models from LL Bean over the years, and this is far and away the best-made one and it's well worth the price. This is not a backpack that's going to fall apart anytime soon. My son used it for all of 6th grade, as well as for many hiking and camping trips with the Boy Scouts, and it still looks brand new. I can't recommend this backpack enough. Also, little tidbit I didn't know until reading these reviews and seeing pictures people posted, but you can customize the thread color for the monogramming, you just have to do it over the phone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by SnoriSnorelsen Comfortable and indestructible!
I used this pack all through high school, and I am now in college. The pack is still going strong. It has carried both light loads and heavy textbooks. I like the side cinch straps that hold down smaller loads so they don't move around while walking. Only small cosmetic wear and tear so far, still fully functional. I never really use the waist strap, because most of the time it is annoying and it is difficult to tuck it all the way into the pack so it doesn't swing. It's too much of a hassle to switch. I think this is a very minor issue, however - I don't feel like I am missing out, as this is not the type of pack that really needs a hip strap. The chest strap is easily removable for day-to-day use. Overall, a very good buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Sispanelli Excellent Bag!
This bag is by far the most comfortable pack I've owned. It is spacious and allows me to carry all of my teaching supplies and laptop. I'm sold on this pack. Thank you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by MossCovered Quad Backpack is the best!
We bought this backpack last year. It is well made and still looks new even after one year of use by my high school aged son. The zippers, in our experience, are the first thing to go but all of the zippers and pouches are still functional and work well. My son literally carries nearly 40 pounds of books and notebooks in the backpack so it has received lots of punishment. This is the first LL Bean backpack we bought but will never buy anything else. Thank you for making great quality products!
