This backpack has survived a lot of abuse, including being overstuffed with textbooks and being tossed carelessly around archaeological sites. I recommend it, because I haven't destroyed it yet.

by Nico34 Very poor quality
The fabric in the bottom of the backpack is seriously defective. I took very good care of the backpack, however the bottom fabric basically teared open due to fatigue of the material. There is a crease where the bottom fabric connects to the rest of the backpack and daily pressure there resulted catastrophic.
It looks good but quality wise it is not better than a 15 dollar cheap backpack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by michiganmaddog Great Backpack for school and general travel.
Bought this for my son as a school backpack before he headed to college.
It was more expensive than other packs that I have bought in the past but my son has been using it for school and misc travel for a couple years now.
He just mentioned again how much he likes the pack so I decided to write a positive review.
I took a chance because of LL Beans satisfaction guarantee and I'm glad I did. It's nice to know that there are still companies out there that really want you to be satisfied-no matter what.
No regrets so far and I'm thinking about buying another for my wife and I to use.
Keep the quality and the satisfaction guarantee and people will be willing to pay a fair price for a quality item.

This backpack is very close to big almost perfect. I travel for work quite a lot and there are a couple of things missing from this bag that I would find very helpful.
1. Pen/Pencil Holders and at least 4 of them
2. It would be nice to have some sort of sleeve on the back so it can be slide over a Pullman handle (rolling luggage) with easy. Right now I have to strain to get the handle on top to fit over the Pullman handle.

Great pack for anything. I have used it for travel and for work. All of the adjustable straps are easy to adjust even while wearing it. Even when stuffed to capacity, the pack still fits in plane overhead bins and under the seats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by rolferchic Its still working!
I bought this backpack for my daughter in while she was in Middle school. It lasted through high school, served as her carry on as she traveled around Europe AND she's still using it as a college freshmen. Definitely worth buying!
Prior to that we were going through one backpack a year, the backpacks from chain retailers locally are not built to last at all! We paid more up front for this one, but never had to buy another one for school. Great investment =)

Rated 4 out of 5 by dh65 Comfortable yet somehow not well planned out
This pack feels great, whether it's carrying a heavy or light load. The straps are comfortable and sturdy. The sternum strap is essential. The quality of construction seems excellent.
And yet I haven't fallen in love with this pack. I find that the different compartments aren't as obviously useful as I expected.
The main compartment, with the padded section for a laptop, is just what you'd expect: big, convenient.
The second-largest section is less useful because it's deep but somewhat narrow. It has a poorly thought-out organizer section with a couple of wide pockets, a cell-phone pocket with velcro-equipped flap, and a tiny zippered pouch. No slots for pens, which surprises me. If you put any load in the wide pockets they sag down and hang open. They're handy for things like sandwiches, packs of tissues, etc., but don't really serve the needs of someone who travels with writing tools or other business supplies.
The microfiber-lined eyeglass compartment is very nice.
Finally, there are two long compartments at the front, one accessible only by a long vertical zipper, the other accessible either by a similar long vertical zipper or from above by undoing the single plastic-buckled flap. Beats me what either of these sections are meant for. I throw my laptop's power cord in the larger one but they feel like a waste of space.
Finally, it's a bit frustrating that the only way to get anything out of the various compartments is to take the pack all the way off. Previous packs I've owned have been designed so you can take them off one shoulder, swing them around to the front, and get in to grab things. This pack doesn't lend itself well to that.
So I recommend this for sturdiness, comfort, quality of construction, capacity to carry a lot of stuff. But I don't recommend it for its ability to keep your everyday stuff organized.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DutchMaster Best school backpack ever!
I got this backpack for my daughter 3 years ago and it is going strong and should see her through high school at least. I am amazed by how much stuff she can put in there. It's like a clown car when she empties out her backpack. Pockets find a place for everything, not too specific but keep it structured. Works great for heavy textbooks, bulky binders, lunch box, gym clothes, etc. My son is looking forward to getting his for middle school too.

Rated 3 out of 5 by GFMom Just too narrow
My son loves this backpack but it is just too slim front to back. We struggled to get all his stuff in in middle school and now, with high school, forget it. If your child has to carry around binders and books (and a lunch), you just can't get it all in there without wrestling with it.

When I selected the Quad Backpack, it was a toss-up between it and the Turbo Transit. I live and work in Tokyo and commute a lot on the trains. I am also a student and needed a pack to carry my laptop and books in so I can study on the go. I went with the Quad because of the padding for the laptop.
About six months after I got it the top strap began to fray and separate on the left side as seen in the attached photos. It finally snapped in early August. I will probably give L.L. Bean one more chance based on past performance of their products and swap it for a different pack. If the second pack fails I will have to quit them because the return cost from Japan is too high.
