I don't understand the rave reviews for these boots with regard to fit. While they appear to be very well made, I thought they were a little heavy, very stiff and had very little padding under the foot. They felt clunky and not flexible and not at all like a boot that I would want to walk or hike in for hours at a time.
They also ran big for me. I typically wear a US 8.5 or 9, or a European 39-40. I ordered a 9 and it was a little too big, which I understood when I saw the sticker on the box said these were a 41 European equivalent. I live in Europe and I've never seen a 9 correspond to a 41, so including both the US and EU numbers in the size chart for this shoe might have helped me get a better fit since I never would have ordered a 41. I've already sent them back for a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by GardenBirdDog Salomon Quest 4D Goretex Hiking Boot
I cannot express an opinion about the durability of this boot, or how well they perform in the intended activities, as I returned both pair. However, they were remarkably comfortable out of the box.
Although I was looking for a hiking SHOE, preferably goretex, I decided to try these, given the glowing reviews. Most reviews did recommend sizing up -- some said 1/2 size, others suggested a full size, so I ordered both 1/2 and 1 full size larger than I would for street shoes.
I found that the 1/2 size up felt like a good fit, even with heavy weight wool socks.
Prior to trying these, I had tried LAST YEAR'S style of Bean's women's Mountain Treads hiking shoe, which were a candidate for the worst thing I've ever put on my feet, where they did not stay for more than about a minute. They were at least a full size short, the toebox was narrow and tight, and they were stiffer than cement blocks.
After that experience, I was tempted by these Salomon boots, because they felt so good right out of the box, but in the end, I decided I'd rather have a shoe than a boot.
I see that Bean has updated the Mountain Treads. The updated version, whose sole looks much different from the older style, has no reviews as yet. I'm waiting to see what others say about it before possibly giving the updated style a chance.
If you prefer an ankle boot, I'd recommend trying these.

These are great shoes right out of the box. I'm normally a size 8 and these seem true to size. I typically have to wear inserts, but not on these. For me, they are a nice balance between support, stability and lightness. I'm on my feet a lot during the day and these are just perfect for me. Thanks LL Bean!

Just like all the reviews said: these boots come out of the box ready to wear - no break-in needed. I have a very narrow foot and was worried about fit - just wore thick socks and they fit like a glove. Not heavy yet are sturdy! A great boot! This is the first time I've tAken time to review a product - had to let others know how great these are!

I love these boots. I have been looking for these for 5 years. All my boots before this were a disappointment in one way or another.
These boots keep my knees steady and cushioned. No knee pain after long hikes. Rocky trails are comfortable to walk on. No pain in my toe joints or arches. Perfect fit. I would recommend these boots to anyone who experiences foot or knee problems when hiking up and down hill.

Rated 3 out of 5 by GMLV These were not for me
I purchased these boots last year when the soles fell off my other boots 2 weeks before a trip to Washington State. I ordered several pairs of boots and tried them around the house. These felt the best right out of the box with the Cresta Hikers a close second. I wore them for 2 weeks of hiking 4 to 6 miles a day. They are very comfortable and do fit very well right out of the box BUT I returned them because the soles of these boots did not offer the protection from rocky walking surfaces that I was used to and expecting. They also looked way more used in comparison to my old pair that I had worn for 4 years. I am currently breaking in a pair of Cresta hikers and find the soles way more protective and the support is stronger for weak ankles.Thank you LL Bean for standing behind what you sell!!

I'm on my second pair of these. They're durable, the blue color is great, they're wide so my feet don't feel squished, and they don't need any break-in time. I recommend these to everyone!!

I bought these boots for a trip to Alaska because I need waterproof, warm, comfortable hiking shoes. I haven't tried them on the trail yet but these boots seem to fit the criteria. My feet are somewhat narrow but I plan on wearing thick socks so the width is not a problem.

The other reviews were right - these boots were extremely comfortable right out of the box. Our first hike was a 3100' mtn, and I had no "hot" spots or feet complaints at the end of the day. And, the boots are definitely lighter without any compromise of strength. I'm looking forward to more hiking!
