Rated 4 out of 5 by Summerwindnc Toasty, waterproof, perfect for the Coldest weather
This coat allows you to venture out in the worst weather snug and dry. Unlike other down coats, you have room to wear a warm sweater, or fleece as it is not snuggly fitted.
Down inside the hood will keep you warm, deep fit allows for a knitted hat to layer up for the best protection from the worst weather winter has to deliver.

It's July and I can't give an accurate rating as far as warmth or durability. It's way too hot to think about putting the parka on. However, it did arrive timely, in good condition, the color and the fit are great.

I purchased my first parka back about fifteen years ago. I work outdoors and wore the parka every day for those fifteen years. The fit was perfect and very comfortable. It always kept me toasty warm. It lived up to the claim of water resistant on the occasions I was caught without my rain gear. It washed and dried beautifully and always looked sharp, even as it got older.
The workmanship was super, made like iron. I especially loved all the pockets. Of course it did fade a bit from all the exposure to the sun but it always looked great. I recently purchased my second parka and look forward to having it for many years. Expensive to begin with but, if you average it out well worth the price.

Warm AND waterproof--great for cold and snowy days of course, but even better when it 38 and raining! Collar is lined with a soft material and zips all the way up to the chin. Length is good--to upper thigh. I ordered a small and it's roomy (I'm 5'6" and i usually wear a size a 6-8). Lots of pockets. I wish they had better color choices though (like twilight blue or periwinkle or emerald green)

Kept me toasty warm and dry during the coldest days.
Plenty of room for layers underneath.
Zipper is horrible. Even when I am careful, it jams.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Lopez metal zipper please
This coat is wonderfully warm in every way. I so wanted to keep it, but I returned it because of the zipper. I read other reviews before buying it, that complained about the zipper, but I still ordered it, thinking that it might not be as bad as the reviewers said. Unfortunately, it was. I was often delayed in leaving places because I couldn't get my zipper started. Once I got the coat on, I was often unable to get the zipper to disengage to get the coat off. At those times, I had to step out of the coat with the zipper still engaged, then climb into the coat, feet first, to wear it again. It would be so wonderful if LLBean decided to give this coat the quality I expect from LLBean, and had it made with a metal zipper.

Purchased this coat for my mother as an early Christmas present. She is tiny woman, only 5' and 115 lbs. She wanted the petite medium. Blue was second choice of color. The red and fuchsia went quickly; like overnight. She received it way before the expected delivery date, which was fine. It was a while before it was cold enough for her to wear this coat. It is very heavy. She didn't like the fur around the hood so she removed it. That is nice feature. She said the coat was extremely warm and windproof. Only complaint was the weight and it has to be really cold, like below 32 degrees, to make it comfortable to wear. She was satisfied with the medium and said it fit her a little large but with other layers beneath it was fine.

Rated 5 out of 5 by saw716 Nice and warm
I live in Upstate NY and wanted the warmest possible winter parka with down insulation and a flattering but roomy fit. I found through trial and error, that a down coat with exterior puffy channels was not the best look for me or for most people unless they are stick thin. I searched every retail source for the warmest parka that would still be flattering and decided to purchase the Baxter State parka. I appreciate that the jacket is cut large enough in the chest/shoulders/arms so that you can easily layer it over sweaters, and that it is warm and also waterproof. I also like that I have the choice to leave the jacket boxy looking or to cinch in the waist a bit. Because I am overweight, I leave it boxy but even so, it is still attractive and I don't feel like I look like a refrigerator. I am 5'2"/165# with hourglass figure and the Petite Large fits very well. The cons -- the faux fur collar quality.. parka length..and creeping zipper. The fur collar is essential because it helps block wind and snow. The quality needs to be improved for a jacket this price. The fur collar was matted right out of the box. So, I used a slightly damp cloth to rough it up, then fluffed it up as much as possible with my hands to make it look better. The hood is nice and warm and I've used it a lot this winter. You can snug it around your head without it being too tight and it doesn't fall over your eyes. The fur ruff should be longer to extend along more of the hood and to shape nicely around - unfortunately it doesn't. I would be happier if the parka was 2-3" longer. I do not have a long torso and the parka length when standing is mid-hip. Like a man's parka, I believe that a woman's parka should be thigh length. There is extremely little jacket length that reaches under your rear when sitting. This is a problem when riding in a cold car. The two way zipper stays closed unless you purposely unzip it. However it creeps up just a mere fraction when sitting so that when you stand and try to unzip the jacket, you cannot successfully unzip the jacket until the zipper is totally closed at the bottom. The zipper operates very well once it is fully closed. If people are having trouble operating the zipper, that's probably the reason why. It would be great if LL Bean would post the product specific dimensions so customers debating the proper size could compare dimensions against their own unique physique. I received these dimensions for the Baxter State parka from Bean's customer services (they aren't posted): Petite Large sleeve=33 1/2..ctr back=29 1/4..chest=49..sweep=50. Petite Medium sleeve=33..ctr back=28 3/4..chest=46..sweep=47. I had ordered the PL but considered returning it for the PM until I compared jacket dimensions. It then became an easy decision to keep the PL and to not waste my time ordering a different size. I would like to see the jacket offered in deep loden, dk. brown, and charcoal grey. Black and jewel tone colors are nice, but I think this is a great product and should be offered in additional colors. Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend this product. Thank you LL Bean for making my winter more bearable!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Constructionsite I would recommend with reservations!
I have had many Baxter State parkas over the years. I was thrilled last year when Bean came out with a waterproof outer shell. I was totally disappointed the first time (and since) I was out on a windy day and the wind went right through the hood where it attaches to the jacket. There is no insulation (or nowhere near enough) around the zipper area! Please, Bean, keep this front-and-center in your designer's minds when you all revisit changes (improvements!) to this coat!! Thank you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Yooper62 Great cold weather coat
I have had this coat for about 3 months and it got me through one of the coldest Michigan winters on record. I took my dog to the windy dog park almost every day and the outer material helped repel the snow and block the bitter wind. The inside kept me nice and warm and I used the hood every day. Length of coat was great and I liked the zipper that would open at bottom if needed. I read all of the reviews and looked at a lot of other coats before I purchased this. I agree with the other LLBean reviews here - the arm length needs to be at least an inch or two longer, but I did like the inner cuff. The faux fur around the collar wasn't great, but I could ignore that since the hood blocked out the cold so well. I mostly wore a hat under the hood when I was out due to the cold temps.
The coat was stiff when I first got it, but after a few weeks of wear loosened up. I purchased a Women's Large, and was wondering if perhaps I should have tried an XL, as the inside, upper arm / chest area was a tad tight. The coat fits better when I wear only light or mid-weight clothing under it, like a long sleeve tee or microfiber fleece. I'm 5' 6", and wear a 38-40C bra, carrying more extra weight on my upper body, if that helps you understand the fit. I didn't want to swim in the coat, so got the L, and it fits well everywhere else. I would not wear this coat for heavy exercise, like snowshoe or x-country ski, since it is heavy and bulky, but for the dog park, snow blowing driveway, getting some firewood, or a short/slower walk in 25 degree or under, it was perfect! I tested it to about -15*. Also, I liked all of the pockets, including inside pockets; which seemed to be well placed and fit the function; i.e. carried keys, sm. wallet, tissues, phone, dog treats, and warmed hands, etc. Really like the outer shell material; more durable, and not likely to tear if you brush against briars while walking in woods. Liked the inside material, too - doesn't get hung up on your clothing fabric. Overall, glad I got this, and good for its purpose, but still wear a lighter down coat for warmer temps and when I am more active.
