I bought this for my oldest son as his upper school graduation gift. I was very pleased from fast shipment, packaging, to the piece of luggage itself. He has been elated with it. It offers tons of room, durable enough for (extreme!) outdoor adventure trips. I can see this is a good investment and it'll last many years and miles.
I'm ordering another for my next son to graduate in May.
Only caveat is monogramming not available. I'll get brass plate made with their initials to have riveted on the piece though.

Took forever with a long backorder, but it was worth the wait...
Was reading all the complaints regarding the side pockets, but after inspecting it, they must have re-designed the side flap for the better... The two side pockets have zippers and there is one large flap covering both side pockets. This flap has two push-in spring clips and two thick leather straps that you can tuck into a slot-holder at the bottom. Looks very secure. I guess I will see how it holds up getting knocked around and going down conveyor belts?

Rated 2 out of 5 by soccerfan173 fix the flaws
This is a really cool bag that generally holds up really well. But read the multiple complaints in these reviews about the side pockets; I cannot believe that they do not fix this flaw and make this a complete bag that will last forever. This relegates this bag to an also-ran. It's cool, it's unique, and sadly it is flawed.
The spring clips on the side pockets never stay closed during travel. Then they get ripped off during baggage handling. My side pockets are both closed off with electrical ties because both clips have been ruined. Fix the flaws and you will have a best seller. Otherwise I will be looking elsewhere.

I recieved my Maine Guide Duffel a couple weeks ago, and just returned from a week long fishing trip in Canada. Besides my regular clothing and toiletries, I was able to fit my foul weather gear, jacket, and rubber boots into this bag, and quite easily.
All the zippers work flawlessly, and all the handles, including the end handles (which prove to be very convenient) are very securely attached to the duffel.
One side of the bag has the two compartments, which are zippered, so I don't comprehent the reviews that complain about the flap catches allowing items to fall out.
The other side of the bag has a slip pouch for traveling paperwork or in my case, my ipad. I have a leather case for my ipad whos straps tend to get caught up when inserting the ipad into the pouch, but I think that most people won't have this issue, as most ipad cases are smooth.
I wouldn't have minded the incorporation of an internal, zippered, plastic lined toiletry pouch, but other than that don't really have any complaints or suggestions.
I consider this a great purchase, and am very pleased with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by CruiseTravelerFL Nice Bag But.....
I used the bag on a recent cruise. Everything I needed to take packed well within it. My only qualm echos what has been said before. The flap that covers the 2 side zipper pockets does not remain closed. Functionally there's no problem with this. But if you put fasteners on a piece of equipment, they should stay fastened. I would still recommend the bag though.

I purchased this bag for my husband because he said he wanted a nicer "duffel" style bag. The leather is high quality, and the waxed canvas gives it just enough of a distressed look that it still is masculine, yet professional. He loves that it has so many carrying options: the two handles on top, the additional shoulder strap, or the wheeling handle. The bag is HUGE- it can hold a ton of stuff. The nice part about the outside is that it has the outer compartment with the buckle snaps, but it also zips inside which provides double enclosure.
I would definitely recommend this bag to anyone who wants a nice, not-stuffy, travel bag with tons of options, stylish look, and a large main compartment! I only wish there were other bags in the same collection of different sizes so that we could add to this one!

Rated 3 out of 5 by soccerfan173 great duffle except for the clasp on side flap
Duffle durability stands up to the rough handling on my international travel. However, the clasp that closes the side flap does not stay closed, it constantly opens. Then, on the last trip the clasp tore off the bag. Taking the duffle to a luggage repair shop tomorrow to see if they have a better idea for securing that flap.

Rated 3 out of 5 by TheCardGuy DIRTY AND WORN OUT
I've had the bag for about two years. It does, as others have noted, show dirt a lot. Some see that as added charm. The "charm" feature of the dirt has worn off. Now it just looks "dirty". The main character of the bag is excellent. Sturdy, stable takes a lot of abuse....all over Italy by bus, train etc. Dragged over the cobble stones walks and streets day after day. The flaps on the exterior pockets do not stay closed but that is not a great problem since they are just a cosmetic feature of the bag. They do look good. The main problem I have results from the fact that the bag is amorphous. It has no frame or structure. Consequently, the end of the bag drags when it is being wheeled. It has worn a hole. I'll contact Bean today about an exchange. Over all I really like the bag but I can't have holes in my luggage.

I got this bag as a 21st birthday present and have now had it for three years. I have the rucksack as well and travel often. Since I received the set, I have not taken anything else on a single trip. My boyfriend and I have used this as our one checked bag for ski trips, tropical vacations, and trips to both Italy and Iceland. This bag can fit 1-2 weeks of clothing for two people, depending on how much cold-weather gear you will need and how many pairs of shoes you insist on stuffing in there. We always fill it to capacity.
One, this is NOT a carry-on. It is large and heavy, and while you can carry it by the shoulder strap it makes far more sense to roll it, and the bag is clearly designed for this. The leather handle and zipper end do dangle, but I have never found this to be an issue. You can easily roll it through an airport, and while it practically BEGS to be abused by baggage handlers, the only damage it has sustained so far are a few scuffs. VERY durable item. (Plus, you'll NEVER have trouble recognizing it when picking up your baggage!) Also, it usually will stand on end by itself, which is something I expected to sacrifice in exchange for a retro design.
Two, the buckles on the side pockets. They always come undone and flap around, which my boyfriend hates. There are zippers underneath, so there is no danger of anything falling out, but it's irritating. However, after reading reviews of the rucksack I found that several reviewers said that the buckles on the rucksack lock. I tried the duffle immediately, as the buckles are the same type, and voila! Insert the buckle into the keeper, press down on the point of the v-shape of the buckle, and the buckle locks. You can tug on it all you like; it won't come out.
I'll be taking this bag to Carnevale this winter, and I expect to be able to fit a week's worth of normal winter clothes plus four elaborate costumes. A great bag, roomy and practically indestructible. Well worth the price. If I ever need to replace it, I'll do my best to get the same item again.
