Years ago, after a brutally cold winter, I was determined not to be cold again. The answer then was in a Bean Rugged Ridge Parka. After several years of solid and dependable service, it was time to replace my old parka.
After looking again to the Rugged Ridge, I decided instead to upgrade to full down and an even better temperature rating and went with the Baxter State Parka.
It's hard to believe you can improve on perfection, but this parka is even warmer than my last, and worth every one of the few extra dollars it costs.
The Baxter State Parka is the warmest coat I've ever worn. It's got all the features one expects in a parka, and every detail is nearly perfect. It is roomy enough to allow for layering, including chunky sweaters, without allowing any chilling updrafts. It fits perfectly as sized and without being too long at the bottom as some parkas tend to be, and all while being lightweight.
The only feature that could be improved upon is the faux fur trim on the hood. I'd rather real coyote fur as are traditional on arctic parkas, but this is a minor point of personal preference.
This winter has been a mild one so far, but the Baxter State Parka has proven itself during every cold snap. I'm confident next winter's normal temps will be no challenge.

I went down a size and so I ordered a new Baxter State Parka. The parka is warm, but has such major design flaws that even this nice Minnesotan is returning it. My list of flaws includes:
1. Stiff fabric. This turned out to be a driving hazard because it was impossible to wear the coat in the car and be able to look backward right and left (when changing lanes) without major efforts to push the hood to the opposite side.
2. Hood is loose. When outside in cold weather, I was not able to make the hood fit snuggly.
3. Unusable outer breast pockets. On my old Baxter, the outer breast pockets were positioned perfectly (whether by design or chance) for a welcome alternative place to warm my hands, but the breast pockets on the new one require that one be a contortionist to open or use at all.
4. Misrepresented black color. The dye used in this new Baxter appears to be derived from indigo, which means that the coat looks (to me) like a true (US) Navy blue, especially when I compare it to my black gloves. I actually like the color, but it isn't black.

Rated 5 out of 5 by alaska888 Excellent, HIgh Quality Parka for my 16 year old!
Ordered the parka and here in two days! I am so impressed with the high quality of this item! Stuffed to the brim with tons of down, substantial weight and not cheaply made. Reminds me of good quality coats we had years ago when things were made properly, and you used your coat for years until it sadly wore out. I was worried about sizing, this is for my 16 year old son who is 6'1" and weighs only 150 pounds. Got the Large and it's a perfect length to the hip and with the handy waist cincher, it can be adjusted so it's not bulky at all. Sleeves are perfect, and a bit longer than most coats, which is great to cover up mittens or gloves and there is a velcro adjustment at the wrist if you want a tighter fit. He loves the faux fur trim and up to date styling with all the pockets. He will be warm and dry on his school trip to Quebec where he is going dog sledding in February (and shoveling our driveway here in New York the rest of the winter). Absolutely worth every penny. Buy with confidence!

Rated 5 out of 5 Awesome
Received this jacket today.
It is way more than I expected.
Love the red.
Will be using it for my upcoming western Canada trip in places where the temperature is on or near -40.
This is the second Baxter State Parka that I've owned, the last one just wore out, it was about 15 years old when I retired it.
Thanks LLBean, for making a really great product.

I have had earlier versions of Bean's "warmest" jacket, and this one is clearly lacking. The old jackets were packed with down; this one has very little down--and what little down there is, is sewn through; no double box design, no overlap. The text says it is rated to 45 degrees below zero. I live in South Dakota, where we have very harsh winters and extreme wind, and I would rate this to about 20 degrees above zero. I think anyone using this jacket in -45 degrees would probably die within fifteen minutes. On top of this, the hood does not wrap around the face. Very strange. If I had been able to find my receipt, I would have sent it back.

Bought this coat last winter. Kept warm and comfortable each time out. Walked to and from work in -35c to -40 in cold Ottawa winter. you can't beat this coat for warmth.

This Baxter jacket is just the best jacket I've ever worn. I've had one (women's) for several years, and bought this for my son for Christmas. The zippers are tight, the hood is as warm as toast, and I even have to unzip it a bit in super-cold weather. This jacket saw me through winter in Oregon and the mountains of northern Arizona, and it is superb quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by happybeaner2 Very nice times two
I purchased this Baxter State Parka for the winter months in nothern Michigan as we live one block from Lake Michigan. The wind off the lake is very cold during nov. thru april. The coat is very warm and looks nice also. My wife used it the other night to walk the dog, had to buy her one for Christmas so I could get mine back.

2 things I found disappointing - first, the drawstring on the hood isn't meant for anyone to use unless they have petite fingers. Secondly, the fur on the hood itself is rather disgusting. I had a similar coat for 20 years and retired it but the fur on that hood was far, far better than what is on the new coat. I was going to return it but since I'm only using the coat with my snowblower in my driveway. It serves its purpose; howver I would not buy another.

I wish they would use a different type of fabric around the collar instead of some catchy polyester. Other than that I love it.
