Years ago, after a brutally cold winter, I was determined not to be cold again. The answer then was in a Bean Rugged Ridge Parka. After several years of solid and dependable service, it was time to replace my old parka.
After looking again to the Rugged Ridge, I decided instead to upgrade to full down and an even better temperature rating and went with the Baxter State Parka.
It's hard to believe you can improve on perfection, but this parka is even warmer than my last, and worth every one of the few extra dollars it costs.
The Baxter State Parka is the warmest coat I've ever worn. It's got all the features one expects in a parka, and every detail is nearly perfect. It is roomy enough to allow for layering, including chunky sweaters, without allowing any chilling updrafts. It fits perfectly as sized and without being too long at the bottom as some parkas tend to be, and all while being lightweight.
The only feature that could be improved upon is the faux fur trim on the hood. I'd rather real coyote fur as are traditional on arctic parkas, but this is a minor point of personal preference.
This winter has been a mild one so far, but the Baxter State Parka has proven itself during every cold snap. I'm confident next winter's normal temps will be no challenge.

About 2 weeks ago I received my Baxter State Parka via UPS. I get cold easily and travel often, sometimes to very cold locations like Alaska and the Great Lakes where temps are -10 to -20 F with wind chill. I'm tired of being cold and my thick peacoat doesn't keep me as warm as I'd like. I also wanted a coat that wouldn't look silly in environments not so cold. The removable hood on this parka fits the bill. For sizing, I'm 6'3" 190 lbs. (16 x 35 shirt size) and the Large Regular fits perfectly!
Before purchasing I spent hours online looking at goose down coats from the major companies, even calling several to compare how much down was in the coat. The Baxter State Parka had nearly double the amount as most others and, in some cases, nearly triple the amount. This coat appears to be made well. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to test it yet. But I'm certainly looking forward to!

Rated 5 out of 5 by gardiner336 Top notch parka
this is a solid 10. you get what you pay for, this has comfort, workmanship, looks, everything you want. now let me tell you any possible negatives if i had to find one. i wish it had a big llbean logo on it, it doesn't. it is heavy because it has all the right materials in it to do the great job it does. that might not be light enough for the women. you won't want to wear alot under this coat, it is great without heavy shirts and sweaters, but when you arrive somewhere inside and you take it off, you may not be dressed warm enough there. in other words, this is a cold weather parka, not just a multi-season one, you may want to keep your other lighter winter jacket for the warmer days. this parka will last for many many years. it is quality all the way. and as in many cases, you may want to go a size up, i sure did and glad i did that. steve.

I bought the same coat 14 years ago. Definitely got my money's worth. I hope the new one lasts as long or more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ReluctantOutdoorsman When they say tall they mean it!
I recently moved up north to MI from the South and knew I needed a big jacket. Having enjoyed LLBean products in the past I thought I would give this jacket a shot. In short, its a great fit!
I am tall and thin (6'4", 175 lbs, 42L in jacket size) so it is rare that I find clothing that actually fits. The length is pretty important here, so I ordered a large tall in charcoal. The tall size really is tall - the arms hang slightly below my wrists and the body of the jacket falls to my thighs for a ~3/4 length. It would almost certainly be too long for anyone even in the 6' range - for them I would suggest the regular length. My wife is 5'2" and it goes to her calves! The hand warmer pockets on the front of the jacket are also quite low, and a shorter person could definitely not reach them on this jacket.
The large size allows for good room for layering without being too huge - anything larger would be wayyyy too big. The drawstrings for cinching both the mid-portion and waist are a nice touch to further improve the fit.
The construction feels well done - the down seems substantial and the outer layer is tough enough to take a beating. Despite the 'fake' look of the faux-fur hood attachment I actually like the way it extends far beyond the hood itself (another 2-3" out) - without it I would be concerned that the hood wouldn't cover my face very well. There are tons of pockets on this thing - outside, inside, flaps, zippered, etc. I particularly like the small breast pocket beneath the main zipper flap - great for storing important items (wallet, phone) for easy access.
The charcoal color is great - I haven't seen the others in person, but the charcoal seems to have more 'texture' to it. It is fairly true to the color in the stock image.
All in all I am loving this jacket - I looked at many other jackets and I find the features here beat out many other, more expensive jackets I tried. I can't wait to try it out in the cold!

LL Bean sent me an email requesting a review of this Item, so here it is. The package arrived on schedule and at the correct address. A+ for LLB!
I was replacing an older Baxter State Parka with this purchase and wanted to have the same green color as my old one. The old color was not available so I chose the blue. I can change with the times and go with the flow because the blue color is quite attractive. A for LLB.
I tried it on and the fit was good as expected. A+ for LLB. It was very warm, but it was 70 degrees outside, and very warm is to be expected.
Starting at the top and working down. The hood is very well made and appears to be well insulated. It should keep my bald head nice and toasty. Interior stitching crosses in 5 inch squares which should keep the down inside from clumping or settling. The "fur" is easily removed if you don't like the look or are allergic. The hood is removable also and has the ability to be tightened or loosened around your face. A+ for LLB
There is a soft and warm lining on the inside of the jacket collar which should be quite comfortable in the cold. A+ for LLB.
The left sleeve has a 5 X 4 inch snap flap pocket for carrying some of your "stuff." There are 11 X 9 inch vertical zippered slash pockets on both sides at the breast level for carrying more of your stuff. The zippers are almost under the armpits, so you will have some difficulty getting your "stuff" in or out if you are wearing the parka at the time. C+ for LLB.
Below the breast pockets there are 9 X 9 inch horizontal two flap snap button pockets. Behind the pockets are vent type pockets where you can put your gloves for easy access if you need to take them off while you are out in the cold. Easy in - easy out, no snaps no zippers. A++ for LLB
Imagine you are wearing the parka with the front zipper zipped. At the breast level on the left side is a vertical zippered pocket just to the left of the jacket zipper and under the snap flap storm flap. Great spot if you want to conceal something that measures 5 X 6 inches. Now open the parka. There is another vertical zippered pocket like the one on the left. This one is accessible only when the parka is unzipped. A+ for LLB.
Inside the parka there is the same 5 X 5 inch stitching to keep the down from settling. At the left breast area there is a horizontal zippered interior pocket about 5 X 5 inches. At the bottom of the inside there is a 9 X 9 inch light weight kangaroo pouch on each side.
Inside the exterior breast slash pockets are cords that can be used to tighten the parka around your waist. There are also adjustable cords at the parka hem to tighten the bottom of the parka around you. The adjustment points are inside the parka, about 14 inches from the zipper. A for LLB.
As I mentioned earlier I haven't had the opportunity to wear it in the cold. If the warmth this parka provides is any where near the utility and quality of construction, it will be a great value. Overall, A+ for LLB.

Rated 4 out of 5 by CritterLad Like walking around in a sleeping bag.
Bought this last Winter in Boston. Was looking for something super warm, hard wearing, and not costing an arm and a leg.
Was able to walk about during the infamous 'polar vortex' with just a t-shirt on underneath. Have also used out at sea where it kept out the wind and protected my face. .
My only gripe is over the cut of the coat which is very boxy in the body and can let wind in if you don't over tighten the drawstrings. I suspect that this is so you can layer up, however layering up with anything when it is over -40 degrees will leave you sweating/uncomfortable. I have the medium (I'm 6'0, 40" shoulders, mid 20's, with athletic build). The small fitted a little better on the body but sleeves were way to short.
The faux fur hood also looks a little bit cheap (subjective opinion) but is useful when it snows and for keeping in heat. When the fur strip is detached the hood doesn't extend fully and wont keep the rain or snow off of your face.
That being said, I love this coat and highly recommend it for utility and value. Would definitely buy again.

My Baxter State Parka arrived today (88f and humid outside, haha) but this is due to I tried to order it last year in November and my size and color choice were gone for the season. Waited it out until this August as I was advised by the wonderful customer service people and I "Assure" you, it was worth the wait! I have owned down parkas before (last one eaten by my dog. careful) but this beats anything else I have seen out there. Everything it claims to be. Very well made, good stitching and quality materials. Fits Very nicely and is true to size so remember that when ordering. I got lucky and had a 20% off coupon from their catalogue, it was tax free week here, and FREE shipping! The jacket is a high fill goose down remember so it has "some" weight to it but the warmth this coat will bring (knowing from past experience) makes every ounce a pleasure to wear. Nice Looking, Well Made Parka. More pockets than you will know what to do with, inside and out. (If my dog eats this one, I will buy another!) I recommend this jacket to anyone who wants a serious winter coat. When I want outdoor and quality, I usually check L.L. Bean First!

Temperature dropped to -15 F (actual) with windchill approaching -40 F last winter. I decided to go for a hike to test my BSP. I was out for over 2 hours and never cold.
My only complaint - the sleeves around for forearm are tight. However, I have an athletic build and big forearms.

I have not worn this yet in cold.
LL Bean has been great so far...no problems.
My only complaint about the jacket is the fur across the hood is a little tacky...pressed and thin.....fake...etc. would have much preferred it to be real and thicker and more plush.
The jacket appears to be very well made. I wear XXL shirts and XL reg coat fits good. 5'9" 240. (All muscle... Ha!)
