I love everything about this coat with one exception. The side pockets are positioned a little low to comfortably accommodate their use. Otherwise I am very happy with my purchase.

So far this coat is Awesome! Tons of pockets, almost too many. I haven't been in -45 yet to see how warm this still is, if I remember right that's what it was rated at. However, the other day it was in the teens and I was extremely comfortable and that's just when I was standing. Once I started working it was too hot and had to shed some base layers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Bob496 Warm, water/windproof & enough room for layeringl
Worked well at a football game on a cold, 12 Deg. F, blustery night with occasional snow bursts.
Breast pocket openings are vertical & face the sleeves which makes access awkward & you need to be careful not to elbow persons on either side. The waist draw cord stops are also inside these pockets & makes that adjustment difficult. Tried to draw down the hood opening around my face a little more, but couldn't manage it due to the location of the draw cord stops. With (1) mitten on couldn't get the other mitten cuff tucked completely into the sleeve cuff. Tucking them in prevents rain or snow from running down the sleeve into mittens or gloves. Might consider adding a visor to the hood - maybe something like on your 261793 rain jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Heyublndie The Warmth I NEEDED!
Overall, I rate this coat as EXCELLENT. There are some small tweaks that Bean could make that would give it the 5-star rating. It is a 4.9/5 stars. A little about me: I am a petite female. I bought the MEN'S jacket because it has 8 pockets. The Women's version only had 6. This is the first tweak. WOMEN need all those pockets too!!!! I find the 'stash', zippered pockets along the main zipper are the BEST. My iPhone 6+ fits, no problem, along with my change purse. I put my keys in the other stash pocket. There is a zippered pocket inside of the coat, awesome, but there is a 'net' like pocket also which is a waste of space & money. I wouldn't put anything in there for fear of it falling out. There are 2 hand warmer style pockets on the front. Also great but they have zippers....??? They zip up, not down, which is good but I find that the cuffs get caught on the zippers & are shoved up my wrist. I could live without the zippers. Inside of the breast pockets is the pull-cord for the draw string. THIS is genius! Love having that feature at easy access. One tweak I would suggest would be to extend the cuffs & add thumb-hooks on the wrist-lets so that when I put my hands in the pockets, they don't get shoved up my arm.
There are 2 outside flap pockets which are secured with snaps. These are good pockets for gloves but I think they need a wee bit more material to make them deeper. When I put my gloves in the pockets, it makes zipping the coat a little tight.
The double zipper is excellent. I had ordered another company's coat to replace my existing coat & it did not have a double zipper. I sent it back. I cold weather, I need to be able to unzip from the bottom to sit in my car. Otherwise my coat gets hiked up around my ears. The hood is great; I love that I can take it off as well as the faux-fur liner can come off separately as well.
Overall, this is an EXCELLENT product and worth the $$$$. It is machine washable (a must have) and very, very warm. Other than a scarf, I don't need another jacket with this coat and I HIGHLY recommend it.

If you have to be out in very cold weather, like for work, or if you simply don't want cold, snowy weather to keep you from outdoor activities, walking, hiking, this is the coat for you.
True to being a 'parka' (or 'parker' as I've heard it called) it falls below the hips, is lined with warm insulation, has a hood with a removable faux fur trim that allows a "snorkel" shape when snugged down, the fur preventing snow getting to your face, cinches at waist and thigh level, and lots of pockets.
A large two-way zipper is a necessity for sitting in car or letting a little air in.
The only downside is its being so warm that it may be too warm for less severe weather. But the combination of a waterproof, windproof yet breathable outer fabric with 650 down means it has a broad temperature range.
I live on a bluff above the Mississippi River that is often windy. I don't hesitate to go out for a walk, however, knowing I'll be protected.
Knowing L L Bean quality I'm sure it will last a long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by bikergal Baxter State Parka wins me over for warmth!
I have searched for a good winter coat for the last 3 years. I live in Pittsburgh, PA. Our winter temperatures generally hover in the 30's to 40's from December until March. January normally sees several days that are very cold, near 0degF. We routinely get 30-50 inches of snow during those winter months, but nothing ever lasts too long, so we rarely have more than 8 inches on the ground at any one moment. Last winter of 2014 was unusual in that we had many days near 0degF for a couple months and snow nearly every day of at least 3-4 inches.
I wanted a coat for scraping the car on frosty days, walking from my parking spot to my office several blocks, and general outside wear. I did not intend to use this coat for outside work, such as shoveling the sidewalks, as I expected this coat to be too warm for that use. I wanted something that would cover my backside and have options for integral head coverage. I am 6ft tall and 300lb, so I wanted something in which I could move freely when the coat was zipped.
I ordered a tall XXL parka for my needs above.
So far, having used it for a month, I absolutely love it. The weather here in the last month has varied from the low 20's to 60degF. It covers my bum completely. The front zipper is rigid and easy to use. It zips easily over my abdomen (I wear a size 44 waist), and I don't feel constricted. The zipper should last a while. I love the integral hood, which was handy for very windy days. I like that the fur zips off. I normally wear a tossel cap, and on windy days I used the hood, and it worked perfectly. I don't see any issues with it keeping me warm in January. It protects from the wind very well, but I have only had 2 windy days in which to test it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by eku67 Tailored for the Michelin Man!
I've tried this coat in the past and returned it due to it's poor sizing. I decided to try it again and had to do the same. Not sure what's going on here - quality control, etc. The coat seems to be a well made, very warm coat. However, the lengths and widths are completely off mark compared to LL Beans other coats/jackets/shirts. I'm 6'4", weigh 200 pounds, have a 36" waist and a 48" chest and usually take either an XLT or XXLT with great results. That said, I ordered the XXLT in this parka (both times about a year apart hoping maybe they addressed the sizing). The sleeves were much too short and I could literally fit another person inside the body of it with me. Quite disappointed to say the least since it looks like a great coat, just sized all wrong. Perhaps take a sizing note from the signature line of clothing - longer and slimmer? I'm done with the Baxter and will just add extra layers under my Maine Guide Parka that's also an XXLT but fits properly in the body and is just slightly long in the arms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by OldBeansCustomer Excellent parka
I recently purchased one of these to replace an old Bean's parka of a different style. I'm very pleased. It's warm, very comfortable, and seems very well made. If you don't want the fur edge on the hood, that is not a problem--it zips on and off, and of course the entire hood is removable. If something happened to this one, I would buy the same thing to replace it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by km12 Poor design for tall people
The waist drawstring was located several inches above the waist. It is as if they made a tall version of the coat by just lengthening the arms and not the proportions in the body. On top of that, the draw string is adjusted from inside the breast pockets that are located 4 or 5 inches above the waist. When tension is placed on the drawstring, coat bunches up between the pocket bottom and the waist. Looks terrible. The design uses 2 plastic drawstring adjustment devices inside the front pockets so they are located in middle of your chest where they poke you. Very poor design. I have retuned my coat.
