Rated 5 out of 5 by WHPH Banish winter
Years ago, after a brutally cold winter, I was determined not to be cold again. The answer then was in a Bean Rugged Ridge Parka. After several years of solid and dependable service, it was time to replace my old parka.
After looking again to the Rugged Ridge, I decided instead to upgrade to full down and an even better temperature rating and went with the Baxter State Parka.
It's hard to believe you can improve on perfection, but this parka is even warmer than my last, and worth every one of the few extra dollars it costs.
The Baxter State Parka is the warmest coat I've ever worn. It's got all the features one expects in a parka, and every detail is nearly perfect. It is roomy enough to allow for layering, including chunky sweaters, without allowing any chilling updrafts. It fits perfectly as sized and without being too long at the bottom as some parkas tend to be, and all while being lightweight.
The only feature that could be improved upon is the faux fur trim on the hood. I'd rather real coyote fur as are traditional on arctic parkas, but this is a minor point of personal preference.
This winter has been a mild one so far, but the Baxter State Parka has proven itself during every cold snap. I'm confident next winter's normal temps will be no challenge.

My husband likes the parka a lot and is happiest because of the removable faux fur and hood since he tends to be more hot-natured and does not like any frills. It will be perfect in colder climates when we travel. Oh, he also loves all the pockets!!!!!

If I had to evacuate my home and spend time in the wilderness, this would be the first thing (along with some Bean Boots) that I would grab. It has more pockets than I know what to do with; it keeps out rain, snow, sleet, and all kinds of gross weather; and it's super comfy. I love wearing this during the coldest days of the year and laughing at all the people wearing fleece jackets and pea coats trying to stay warm. Was that too cruel? Probably. Whatever. I plan on keeping this jacket till the day I die.

Rated 5 out of 5 by AdirondackGrayFox Superb Warmth and Comfort
This is a very nice parka and I expect it to last for a very long time as the quality seems excellent.
Warmth: The coldest I've tested it is -8deg F, not including wind chill, and it indeed kept me warm. I didn't even have the hood attached at the time and was still warm. It's totally impervious to wind. The down is sewn into squares so it won't shift all around on you.
Hood: It unzips off the jacket and the furry part unzips off the hood. The furry part isn't real fur so it looks a little cheesy and isn't too full. I plan to take mine to a tailor and have real fur put on it. The hood is fully insulated with down, like the coat.
Collar: It's tall and insulated with down. Fleece on the inside and feels good against the skin.
Pockets: I counted 12 of them! They are all over this thing. 8 on the outside and 4 inside. They vary in size from small to large.
Drawstrings: There are 2. One mid way down from the top and one at the bottom. The middle one takes out the slack to make it more form fitting. There is no waist skirt. I have another parka with a waist skirt and they are very nice indeed when the temps get crazy low.
Sleeves: Velcro at the wrists so you can snug them down. On the inside there are fleece cuffs that are so soft. They stop the wind from going up your arm. I love this feature.
Size: The large is true to size. I'm 6'1" 190lbs and it fits great.
Color: The colors on the LL Bean website are not accurate. I got the blue coat and it's an entirely different shade than the picture. I would describe the color as just a touch lighter than navy blue. I was glad however because I like the actual color better than the picture.
Zipper: It is a color matched plastic, heavy duty zipper. Works great and it's reversible so you can unzip it up from the bottom if need be.
Snaps: 7 up the middle and 5 on the outside pockets. They are large and seem strong to me.
So, in conclusion, I love the parka. I think if they added a good waist skirt they could get another 10deg colder on the rating but that's it's only flaw, (if you can call that a flaw.) Keep in mind that you won't get the color of the picture, it's a bit of a gamble in that respect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ForwardBuffalo Super duper warm, could use some modernization
Im about 5'6" 165 lbs athletic build and have a medium which fits me comfortably with plenty of room to wear a bulky sweater underneath. It could actually be a tad bit more "slim fit" to flatter my physique a little more. This is an awesome jacket that kept me warm all through the harsh Buffalo winters. When Im out digging myself out of the driveway or walking to dinner, this jacket never lets me down which is no surprise coming from LLBean. I swear by it so much that I made my gf get one too. Whenever I would take it off upon arriving at a friends house they would always comment on how "heavy" it feels which leads me to a few points. This isnt some lightweight technical jacket that you would plan on doing laps around the park in, its heavy for good reason. Now- my one gripe about this jacket- would the masterminds at LLBean PLEASE make this jacket a little more appealing in regards to its appearance? Tweak a few things and make it look a little more "hip" for the younger crowd (Im 28). I love the jacket but I wish it wasnt just plain blue with no accents to make the jacket "pop". Try a colored liner, or colored stitching, maybe different color fabric on the zipper pulls or a redesign a logo to make it recognize the heritage of this jacket. Little details can go a long way- I can totally envision how I would tweak this jacket it if I was on the design team. Otherwise keep up the great work Bean masterminds.

Rated 4 out of 5 by andylar Very warm and comfy
It is very warm. It is thick but still quite light weighted for such thickness, and very comfortable on your shoulders. It is definitely not of ?elegant, city? style dress, in case you are looking for such, but rather of ?suburban-country-outdoor-heavy-duty? style. It is convenient and practical. The strong zipper is two-way ? a must for long jackets. Snaps on the front flap are good for quick button up and for extra protection from the elements. Apart from numerous outside pockets, there are two big mesh pockets on the inside of the bottoms (for bulky gloves, mittens, etc.) On the chest there are two internal side-access pockets on each side, one ? outside of the zipper, another ? inside, plus one ?fully internal? pocket to keep your cell phone warm; all three are zippered. A zip-off fur ruff is very good during snow and wind weather, e.g. during snow-blowing a driveway :) However, the synthetic fur is of bad quality and spoils the overall impression of the parka. And this is my only complaint: I?d definitely prefer a better fur even for a slight increase of the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 Better than the old one
I have been wearing the same Baxter State Parka for 20 years and finally decided to get a new cold weather coat. I tried on all kinds of tech-layered, ski fashionista and Nordic brands at twice the price, but this one still was what I came back to. The present model is an improvement over the old one: down rather than polyester fill, knit cuffs, interior pockets with zip closures, fake fur ruff and a tighter storm flap around the neck. When it came to the ultimate test ? walking the dog on 16 below Minnesota mornings? This bad boy kept me toasty. Plus, you can't beat the value for price.

I love the coat. It fits well and is plenty warm BUT the snaps are totally inadequate. I prefer to snap the coat shut rather than zip it up but the snaps pop open at the slightest movement. I'm trying to find a place to replace them with heavier ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RWT4 Warmest as advertized.
I'm a native New Englander, 65y, 6-2 at 200 lbs and wore out two USAF N-3b parkas issued in 1970. The Baxter Parka (purchased on 12-12-13) is as advertized and a worthy replacement. The XL size fits real good and is nice and comfy. We've been pounded with a lot of snow and temps in the single digits - this coat is a keeper. Note; I've purchased and returned three other companies N-3b style coats. I would have preferred a coat made in the USA, but those days are gone.

My wife and I both purchased this coat last year. With the extremely cold temperatures we've had in Illinois this year, the coat has performed even beyond our expectations. Whether it's freezing rain or sub-zero temperatures with high winds, this coat can handle it all. Every now and then I find a bit of down sticking to my shirt or sweater, but I don't consider that a problem at all because of the outstanding protection that these garments provide.
