Rated 5 out of 5 by orangeflower Nice "Man bag".
I purchased this for my son as he and I got tired of the bulging pockets and misplaced items. He was always forgetting or misplacing things. He loves the compartments as they keep everything organized. The fabric is sturdy. He uses it all the time.
My daughter nicknamed it his "Murse"...short for man-purse. I think it just a very useful every day satchel type bag.

I purchased this as a gift for my bird watching daughter. She absolutely LOVES it. Couldn't be more pleased with this excellent product!

Rated 3 out of 5 by malenkya Less capacity than you'd think.
Since my "field trips" are mostly around the city, I was looking for a smallish casual thing that would carry the usual handbag stuff plus a Kindle or iPad or paperback. I love the size, fabric and appearance of this bag. But it has a problem: so many features have been included in its rather small size that they diminish its actual carrying capacity. All the lined, bound and padded pockets take up space that could have been used for more carrying capacity. Because the bag is rather small, the pockets are miniaturized. The exterior cell phone pocket won't take my iPhone. You can squeeze a standard plastic bottle into the water bottle pocket but it's tight, and the bottle sticks way up out of the bag. There's an inside pocket that does accept my phone and another that holds reading glasses -- without their case. The main interior space fits an iPad or a Kindle but not if you also want to carry a wallet, sunglasses, tissues, a little makeup -- the stuff that women need during the day. I think it would work better as a man's bag than a woman's: men tend to keep wallets and stuff in their pockets. The strap is also man-size; the padded leather center prevents me from making it short enough to carry on my shoulder; I must wear it cross-body. What I would really love, LL Bean, is this bag, about 15% larger, with fewer but more useful pockets. And, since I'm wishing, how about hardware that lets you wear it as a small backpack?

by Ida03312011 Looks sturdier than it really is
Fairly happy with the bag overall except for the incredibly cheap hardware. Over a period of two years one of the swiveling snap clips that holds the strap wore down and finally popped out of the socket today.
NOT a happy customer. For $90 you should have use better hardware than that, especially on a FIELD BAG that is supposed to be heavy duty.
LL Bean quality has gone downhill drastically. A company that used to produce durable, reliable products is quickly becoming a company that focuses on the aesthetic value more so than the durability and quality of the item.

Rated 4 out of 5 by RAC12 Just perfect, but . . .
This was exactly what I was looking for, not too big and very sturdy. Perfect for travel. I just loved it, but had to return it since it came with a warning that it was not to be used by people with pacemakers. It contains a large magnet clasp. Unfortunately, that applies to me. Too bad there was nothing said about that in the product description. Now if they would only make it with a real buckle closing, then I would buy it again.

Excellent quality, good price. Perfect shoulder bag for hiking to around town. Holds more than it may look from the photos and description, yet not nearly as large and bulky as a messenger bag.

Over all a nice quality bag?
The only disappointment was the fake buckle on the front. It?s only a cover for a magnet snap. Thus making it feel even more like a purse for a man.
Plenty of pockets and compartments for organization.

Rated 3 out of 5 by nancyhomemaker very interesting design and material
I should have paid closer attention to the size of the backpack. It was much smaller than I expected although I love the design and material! It would be perfect in a larger size (to pack along a lunch for instance) The price for such a small bag was too much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by labman14456 Good!!
This is a Christmas gift to a friend who likes to use it as a purse. Bought the same one for her a few years back and it is still being used. Quality of materials seems good but the waxed canvas does need to be treated every so often to keep it waterproof. It is big and roomy enough for her to carry what ever ladies like to carry out but it is not overly cumbersome. The shoulder strap is useful for when she hikes and the bag doubles as a day pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Androscoggin No overhead compartment hassles
I had the nylon version of this; I was very pleased with it until the drawstring on the too-small "water bottle holder" broke. We went to Freeport to exchange it but they didn't have any in the color #olive# that I wanted. I was going to return it for the cash, but looking around the men's section of the store #not the luggage/bags section#, came across this. I bought it, and my wife decided to take the old one.
This is about three times as expensive as the nylon identical size and design, and noticeably heavier. But it looks cool, and I think it has maybe a little more room. It can carry: iPad and/or Kindle #and chargers#, a baseball hat, a compressible rain jacket, pens, notebook, mini-Mag light, a couple of MP3 players, Sony RX100 camera, wallet & passport, car keys, some granola bars, a skinny water bottle, my skinny old Trafone #I don't see that pocket fitting a bigger phone, that's one drawback#, and quite a bit of other odds and ends.
I bought the previous one because I don't like dealing with overhead compartments on airplanes. This just sits at your feet, with pretty much everything you're going to need for the flight. But I've come to use it every day; I'm afraid I've reached the point where, like a wallet, I couldn't manage very well without it.
