Rated 4 out of 5 by BuffaloWinters Quiet
I wanted this for hunting as a backup rain parka to my U.S. Army Gortex Parka. When I get soaked through I sometimes go back to my truck and change. I think my old gortex will be the backup to this because it is much quieter. I think it could be improved by simply moving the side zippered vents up centered in the armpits like the ARMY Gortex parka. I also would like at least one zippered pocket inside the parka. I do not believe this would add much cost and would help the ventilation issue in the arms. I asked many years ago for a hunting parka with a rear pocket and this has one. I probably won't get the zip in liner but instead use various layers that can be taken off accordingly and placed in the rear pocket or back pack. In cold weather, I use the liner pants with various poly pro long johns according to the temperature and a fully lined hunting parka with numerous pockets. I do not have the over pants. I was in the first ARMY unit in AK to be issued the Gortex extreme cold weather system. What I learned was flexibility in the layers that you wear according to the degree of activity is the key. I always remember swinging a sledge hammer at -50 degrees and taking off my gortex parka to brush the frozen sweat off my poly pro shirt. Sometimes you just have to take your parka off.

Rated 2 out of 5 by KingRon Almost a great Jacket
Perfect size, design and weight except that the sleeves are not breathable. After a long hike up the mountain on a cold day, the inside of the sleeves were soaked from perspiration.
It was returned, to the store along with the pants, no questions asked.

Rated 4 out of 5 by EverythingOutdoors Good, not perfect...
This jacket is good, not great. I like the exterior fabric and some of the features (like the shoulder rubber areas to avoid gun strap slip) are great. LL Bean needs a Gore-Tex pro shell that is lighter in weight and has great pocket layout.
This item may be great for some. I've been looking for some time and this just wasn't exactly what I was looking for in a hunting shell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by HuntWillowFlowage Very good quality
My review starts back when I opened the item. I was very impressed with the feel and quality of the shell; couldn't of been happier with it. I've had many shells and this one, I find, is the best. Some may find it heavy, which it is, but I don't mind that.
I finally had a chance to wear it today. We live in the country and have wide open fields around us. Thus a lot of wind. It was 15 degrees and 20 mph winds. I really wanted to give it workout so I put on the snowshoes and walked the drifted fence lines around our the perimeter of our property, aprox. 3 miles. I felt the shell was completely windproof and with all the blowing snow it never got through and I stayed dry (from snow). The zip vents seemed to work well for regulating body temp. One thing I liked best was the hood. I got hot with the hood up so I zipped the jacket up all the way, cinched the draw strings and pulled back off around my neck. That made a perfect gator. No wind got down the neck. The bad or odd, however you want to look at it, is the moisture build up in the sleeves. This is a common complaint from what I have read. Towards the end of my walk I could tell my arms were a little chilly, not cold. When I got home I took the shell off and did find a little amount of perspiration starting to build inside the sleeve. I to don't understand LL Beans reasoning for this design. It is a flaw. I feel if you were to walking miles everyday this could pose a problem. However, when I walk into stands I never wear a coat anyways. Combined with the heavy weight liner I bought I feel it will be a superior jacket system for Northern Wisconsin deer hunting. I liked the shell so much that the moisture issue doesn't really bother me. I don't think the jacket is quite a 5 star rating, more like a 4 & 1/2. I usually purchase Filson items so this is my first LL Bean product and I'm very pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by orca68 Well made, seems a bit heavy
Very well made, as expected. Fit is good. It is, however, heavier and bulkier than what I may want to try and fit in my hunting pack for all day treks.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Mooseface Don't sweat
I am a dedicated LL Bean fan. I purchased this to deer hunt in Maine. Day 1 I had it tied on my pack to hunting spot, put it on in 30 degree morning and fell in love. Day 2 I wore it to my stand, got sweaty and sat. Then found out about the sleeves. This also holds your sweat vapor in the shoulder area. I had to shorten my hunting day due to being so cold. Check the questions on this product, this is a known problem. This was like wearing plastic bags on my arms. This garment was returned. If the sleeves were breathable it would have been my favorite coat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by texanviamaine Great Hunting Gear!
I bought the entire big game system (technical jacket, pants, mid-weight liner and the heavyweight liner. I have now used all the pieces to this system since we had a cold spell and it got into the 20's. I have a medical condition that makes me get a lot colder than most people and have been looking for years for something I could easily change out the pieces for varying degrees of warmth. The jacket liners zip in and out with quick ease and attach well with the small snaps at the sleeves and neck area. The pieces are very well constructed and comfortable. There is lots of pocket space and they all have zippers that work well and are easy to access for hunting gear. You can pull the hood tight around your head and there is a small soft "bill" like a ball cap that slightly sticks out to help shed rain from your face. I was very warm in 20 degree weather with the heavy weight liner and the rest of the system. I did also have on a base layer and secondary layer underneath the jacket and pants. I am female and bought a size M knowing I would wear a base layer and a secondary layer underneath it a lot of the time. It is true to size and gives you the movement you need when walking, stalking game or just trying to get in and out of a deer blind. All pieces are soft and quiet. The jacket has good non-slip material on the shoulders so your rifle sling does not slip off and stays in place. I am very happy with this system and it has made my hunting season much more comfortable. Thanks LL Bean once again!

Rated 4 out of 5 by VTMan Good Jacket with a Caveat
I have now used this jacket for the majority of Vermont?s deer and fall turkey seasons. I had originally purchased the basic shell for spring turkey season but returned it because I was not satisfied with how it performed. I decided to give the Technical Shell a chance with the hope it could perform better for me. First and foremost, this jacket is cut generously. Every other LL Bean jacket I own is a tall large (including the basic shell that I returned). I had to go with a standard large on this one and I probably could have gone with a medium. (I?m 6?-2? 210 lbs and wear size 36 pants).
If you have a moderately strenuous hike to get to where you want to be, you?re going to find this jacket is too warm. The nylon on the inside of the sleeves does not breathe. The other morning I had my sweat freeze inside the sleeves. I?ve found that the problem is exacerbated if you wear moisture wicking layers underneath the shell. The designers attempted to alleviate the issue of breathability by providing vents on the sides of the jacket. These help slightly, but would work better if they were in the armpit, not along the side. Opening up all the pockets also helps, but doing so will run the risk of losing anything you put in them. With that being said, proper layering goes a long way. I?ve resorted to removing the jacket if I know I?m going to break a sweat on my hike in or out.
Despite breathability concerns, I think LLBean really nailed some of the features on this jacket. I?ve sat through torrential downpours as well as some snow and I stayed completely dry. I haven?t had any issues with wind either. The black rubber on the shoulders is a nice touch and helps to keep your rifle sling where it belongs. Overall, you won?t find a better jacket at this price point. This is a huge upgrade over the basic shell and is well worth the extra price. My hope is that Bean can address the breathability issues in a future upgrade.

Rated 3 out of 5 by FishingFreak Works well, but has weak main front zipper
Layering works well so buy a size up if it fits snug. The pockets are very handy but zip stiff and are unmanageable with gloves on. The zippers could use bigger tabs or draw leads a little more substantial. The system has an excellent UV profile (I tested it with UVA and UVB) but tends to 'shine' a little on a bright day and definitely shine in sunlight, so it needs several washes to dull it, then a couple more with de-scenter soap.
The downside though: during my third trip out with the Technical Shell this November (2012) the main front zipper blew out 5 teeth while i was pulling back my crossbow. That left me all day in the woods at -5 deg with an open jacket. It's now a heap on the floor waiting to go somewhere to get a new heavier (hunting-rugged) zipper added to replace the skimpy city-dweller zipper it came with.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Sirhuntsalot I really wanted to like it...
The jacket is comfortable, relatively warm, has great pockets and looks good. However, I found the rubber padding on the shoulders just to darn noisy to continue wearing the jacket while bowhunting in a treestand. It bothered me every time I turned my head or moved my shoulders. For this reason the jacket (and matching pants) are being returned. I'll buy the jacket again in a second if they fix the noise issue.
