I bought these because of the ankle support, which is outstanding. I broke my ankle very badly on both sides a few months ago, and I went from the big post-cast boot to these to help transition back to normal shoes. The boots are true to size. I'm a 9.5, I ordered a 9.5, and these work great for me with lightweight socks. You can adjust the boots to whatever level of tightness you want both in the lower and upper part of the boot, but make sure your laces are actually all the way in the two big metal tracks, which have small studs on perimeter to keep the laces locked in once laced. The boots are waterproof and like most waterproof things could breathe better. I usually just take an extra pair of socks to work or wherever just in case. These are tough boots and will hold up. I plan on hog hunting with them when I'm well enough to get back out.

AS I was continue to wear there hikers I discovered another few problems. One hiker is smaller than another one and i began to develop more pain above my ankle to the point where I could not walk. Pain stopped me from loving these hikers. Too narrow too and not very breathable get steamy inside the boot only after a few minutes of walk. What would be after all day of walking ? Probably wet wet feet ......... Do not recommend these

Rated 2 out of 5 by fatpigbrand Does not stay tight
These boots does not wonna stay tight due to the round slippery lacers. LL Bean should not repeat this type of flaw. Make flat lacers from none slippery material. This is so easy to do.
Another thing is sizing is not true sizing. I have ordered 11 regular and it so tight more like narrow and my foot is medium not wide at all. Can not enjoy these hiker. Will return it and get Cresta leather hiker in wide EE and see how that works.

Fit is true to size, very comfortable out of the box without any break-in period. Very lightweight for a pair of sturdy hikers. May be slightly more than some people would want for an everyday shoe, but I could wear them most of the year. Maybe not during the warmer months when I prefer very lightweight footwear.
Overall very impressed that they could make a boot with so much support, with such comfortable and lightweight wearability.

The boots felt great the first time I put them on and with all the snow here in NJ, they got right to business. However, the round laces refuse to stay tied unless I double-tie them. If not for the lace issue, I would have given them 5 stars.

This hiker is the best boot I have ever worn. My feet are comfortable in both summer & winter conditions. I wore them for approx. 8mos without an issue. I have recently exchanged for another pair. Although I never give suggestions to others about what they could wear, I wouldn't hesitate to pass on my satisfaction with these boots if the topic arose.

this is a great boot and really comfortable. Normally it takes me quite a while to break in a new pair of boots - sneakers or shoes. The first time wearing these I went on a 5 mile hike, and had absolutely no discomfort.

When we go camping, we hike up over the mountain and our packs run 60 to 70 pounds so we need good footwear. These are the best that I have ever worn!

These boots were absolutely flawless during an 8 day, 60 mile trek through the mountains/jungles of Peru. These required zero break in time, and were perfect right out of the box. They were lightweight, cool, never got wet, and handled mud perfectly. I was apprehensive due to the high cost however, they were totally worth it. The best pair of boots I have ever owned. Highly recommend!

by MADMainiac Excellent after some tweaking
I purchased these boots a couple of years ago at the Freeport store because I found them incredibly comfortable, lightweight, and very supportive. Unfortunately, when I actually used them for hiking I found that hikes longer than 3-4 hours caused blisters on my heel. At first, I thought that this was simply a question of being broken in, but time did not improve the situation. Since the problem seemed to be at least partially related to my feet getting sweaty in hot temperatures, I tried different socks, sock liners, etc. but found no resolution. Finally, after thinking a little more about the problem, I decided that it centered around a deep heel cup. With this in mind, I purchased and inserted some heel liners from CVS (although any firm, adhesive heel liner would likely have worked, as long as it provided bulk and and didn't move around). This instantly solved my problem and I have had no issues with blisters since this tweak.
Since then, these boots have lived up to their initial promise. I have used them on everything from the Carriage roads and Granite mountains of Acadia to the coastal range of California with equal satisfaction. They perform well in mud or dust, snow and slush, and stick well to steep granite faces even when wet after a shower. They are equally satisfactory for day hikes, as well as for heavy packs on weekend trips. I typically hike 8 to 12 hours and often climb 2500 to 5000 feet and these boots can handle these situations with ease.
The gusseted tongue serves equally well to keep the boots dry, keep out debris, as well as keep the tongue centered for comfort. As mentioned, the tread works well on mud (clearing fairly easily) as well as granite faces. It does does take a beating on volcanic rocks (especially fields of volcanic glass), but I have yet to find a boot that does not.
Overall, since my tweak last year, these boots have lived up to their promise and I am very satisfied. I suspect that for most, the fit will be good right from the start, but for those with a problem like mine, once I decided what the problem actually was the fix was easy and durable (see images of the heel liner in place after more than a year of use).
In short - excellent boot for day hikes or long trips with a pack.
