I love this shirt! I have grey, seaport blue, and a pretty coral with pink stripes. The quality of the shirt is great, mine haven't shrunk much at all, no fading, and they come out of the dryer pretty wrinkle-free.
The knit is a surprising medium to heavy cotton which almost feels like a lightweight sweater instead of a pullover top.

This shirt is well-made and well-proportioned. The stripes line up nicely at the side seams, and the slight fitted-ness at the waist is just right.
The fact that it's made in Peru makes me wonder if it's made of pima cotton, but the tag didn't specify such. The cotton is wonderfully substantial.

I loved this shirt at first sight. It's such a classic piece and well-priced for its quality. I loved it so much that I was going to buy all the colors available. Unfortunately, mine has shrunk, probably more than an inch or two. Now its length is about the same as its width, it falls at my waist and looks ridiculously boxy. Not flattering at all! I compared this shirt to the West End Tee in Small (ok, I know this one is supposed to fall at low hip) and my French Sailor Shirt is 4.5 inches shorter.
Too bad because I loved the texture and the colors of the fabric. It's thick, soft, and doesn't fade after 100 times of washing and drying. I REALLY wish L.L.Bean would improve this cut and make it slimmer and longer.
For reference, I'm 5'3 and bought this in my usual size Small.

I was pleasantly surprised that the top was cut a little longer than I expected, which took care of shrinkage worries. After I washed and dried it on medium heat, the length was perfect. I am 5'7" around 130 lbs. and the Medium fit just right, with enough room to layer with a tank top if needed. The fabric has somewhat of a ribbed texture and is very stretchy. I got the cream with navy stripes. The cream is definitely cream and the navy stripes are very dark. I bought it to wear with faded jeans; I don't think it would work well with white or navy slacks. I personally like the 3/4 sleeves, I think they make it look more stylish. But it would be nice if they offered a long sleeved version as well. My only complaint is that the neck opening bumps at the shoulder seam due to the thickness of the fabric. But it is not enough of an issue to detract from my opinion of the top. Overall -- very nice for the price!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Seattlejanie cute fabric, very boxy fit
I love the fabric on this shirt. It is very heavy, such a heavy knit it could be worn as a sweater in cold weather. The fit however, I'm not so sure about. I wish it were just a little more tapered at the waist, it is very generously sized - I ordered a small and it fits loose but somehow makes for a chunky look at the waist. Normally a size small works for me but an extra small might have been better in this shirt.

i got this as a gift and am ordering another. Any product available 100 percent of the time in a bean catalog must be good! three quarter sleeves for seasonal transition plus the style just makes you want to go pole a boat. The fabric is heftier than most others and the rib is fairly noticeable. I have seen others with finer rib and trendier detais, but i suspect yours is going to stay in my closet longer. Also, conservative navy/cream or vice versa can be easily layered with thigs like tartan shirts that are also classic (just pick something that doesnt clash) and you are right in style. Awesome!

I recently purchased this in the cream/navy (petite medium) and think it is great. It is comfortable and stylish. Can't wait to try some other colours.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Phinney Disappointing quality
I love the classic blue and white French sailor shirt although the quality of the fabric has declined over the years -- I've worn this shirt my whole life. The fabric is too soft now. It used to be harder, like linen almost. I just bought the coral/pink one as a gift and I am returning it. It looks like the pink color almost bleeds into the white lines so that the white lines are slightly pink. The shirt is not defective but I think the weave fails to create a strong separation between the white and the color. So it looks cheap. LL Bean is not what it used to be.

Please make this in a long sleeved version. Three quarter sleeves seem to have taken over everything - or perhaps give us a choice of long sleeves or three quarter sleeves - PLEASE!

Rated 3 out of 5 by austinbeans My fave shirt has changed too much
I have bought five or six of these shirts over several years and unfortunately the cut and quality, especially of the fabric, has gradually fluctuated to the point that I let longer periods of time go between ordering replacements in hopes that the thicker, abrasion resistant, less stretchy and clingy fabric would appear again. It hasn't. Not quite sure yet but I may send back the one I just received and sadly don't plan to order again what was once a go-to great shirt.
