My son (17) needed wind-proof outerwear for the walk to school. He layers this with a thick fleecy sweatshirt and it does the trick. Perfect warmth and wind-reistance without a huge coat to lug around! (for reference: We're in NYC - it gets pretty cold)

Rated 3 out of 5 by ParkSlope Can't cinch hood
The hood is loose. This would be okay if you could cinch it. But you can't. If you are walking into the wind, it comes in around your head. And if walking into a stiff wind, it will blow the hood right off your head. You have to cinch it with your hand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by PierFisherman Nice hoodie
I would have rated this hoodie as excellent, but I've had some issues. It would be great if the hood had draw strings. I had to return the jacket because the main zipper got tough to draw. The customer service is excellent and I received a new jacket, but then on the first use, a pocket zipper broke. I was able to fix it, but I hope that L.L.Bean will look into this.
Over all the jacket is warm and the wind proofing is excellent. It is used as a mid layer under a shell or as a stand alone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by skidogger still looks new after 4 years
I've had a wind challenger hooded fleece jacket for 4 years now, and it still looks new, even after repeated washings. The fleece does not pill, and is not quite as much of a pet hair magnet as traditional fleece. It is rugged, durable, and definitely warmer for weight than traditional fleece. Even though the hood doesn't have a draw-string, I have not found it to blow off as long as I wear a baseball cap underneath. It is also a great piece for layering, and functions as a soft shell. I like mine so much, that I have ordered another in a different color.

Dealing with LL Bean is so nice. When I ordered and paid for this item I made a mistake with the exchange rate. When I telephoned the people I talked with were so nice - many thanks!
This item arrived on Tuesday 10 November - quickness of delivery is just stellar.
My husband tried on his new Wind Challenger Hooded Fleece Jacket and the fit was perfect. The next day he wore it on his walk to work. The weather was just miserable with rain and wind. When he got home from work at the end of day he gave the new jacket the thumbs up all round. It's very warm, windproof and the rain didn't soak through.
An excellent product!

Rated 4 out of 5 by PinchersofPower Very good, but needs improvment
Fit overall is good.
Polartec Windbloc: Great material. Breathable, but it bucks the wind. This jacket is fairly water resistant too. Near perfect 3-Season jacket.
Cuffs: Not my favorite. They are a high quality elastic. Great for quickly sliding over gloves and long sleeve shirts. I don't like the look. I would rather have a cinching cuff of some kind. Velcro would be ok with me.
Hood: It bucks the wind, if you can keep it on your head. There needs to be a draw string of some type to tighten it up.
Great jacket for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Lownoteartist Tall is not so tall !
I bought this item in the XXL Tall size, because, at 5'11" tall, I usually would wear turtlenecks or light sweaters underneath for most winter conditions, and I have had similarly sized fleece items from LL Bean in the past.
Although I generally can recommend this item, the size issue was a disappointment. I find the sleeve length OK---I have normal length arms for somebody of my height---, but the body length seemed shorter than any other LL Bean items that are sold as Tall. If Tall sized items are supposed to fit men from 6'0" to 6'5" or so, there will be a lot of tall guys returning this item, IMHO.

I was surprised just how warm this jacket is. Great jacket for spring when the weather can be breezy and misty.

I love fleece for a lot of reasons: soft and breathable, lightweight and non-bulky warmth, quick-drying, retains some insulation value when wet, relatively inexpensive, etc., etc. The big problem with fleece, of course, is that unless you're wearing it under a wind-blocking layer, the mildest breeze cuts through it like a knife. I was looking for a piece to add to my hiking/backpacking layering system that would give me all the benefits of fleece, but with protection from the wind as well, so I wouldn't have to resort to putting on a windshirt or other shell unless things got ugly. Well, this wind challenger fleece hoody fits that bill nearly perfectly. It's soft, warm, light, non-bulky, breathes, and stops the wind in its tracks, all for a very fair price (around half the price or less of some of the more "technical" hoodies I considered). Plus it looks good, and even though it's marketed as a "jacket", it's still casual enough to wear around the house like you'd wear any plain old fleece hoody, without looking like you're wearing a coat indoors. I said nearly perfect, because there are two features that would take it to the peak of perfection for me: longer sleeves with thumbholes, and a drawstring on the hood. Those are minor gripes though, not enough to cost it a star. The hood, for one thing, is already close-fitting enough that the lack of a drawstring isn't an issue in all but the strongest winds. On the other hand, I have a big head (7-3/4 hat size), so your mileage may vary. I also wish it came in some more colors, like a nice olive green, but c'est la vie. The black one I got looks sharp, though as is typical with black fleece, it seems to be a magnet for fur. For what it's worth, I'm 6' tall, ~190lbs, and a medium fits me perfectly, with room underneath for a couple of light to medium layers. Oh, one more thing: even though it's not listed in the description, the two handwarmer pockets on the outside have zipper closures, which I was very happy to see.

Rated 3 out of 5 by SAM99 Not breathable
I was looking for a breathable windblock fleece jacket for my husband.
This jacket traps moisture. On a dry cool day, on two-mile hike, the jacket became uncomfortably moist inside. Also, the hood has no drawstring and a little breeze in your face blows it right off your head.
The jacket is attractive, short piled fleece, a little stiff, but still nice. We bought the next size up to layer and it is perfect for that.
