Rated 2 out of 5 by Mikee121 Not nearly warm enough.
I am comparing this coat to my old thigh length down coat that I bought about 10 years ago, for about one third the price.
Around my torso, where the coat has the wool lining, it is warmer than my old coat. I found that my torso was perfectly warm while waiting for a bus on the coldest Chicago days this winter. With my down coat, I would need a thicker sweater underneath. But sadly that is where the good news ends.
At the same time, I noticed that my arms were getting cold, not something I experienced with my down coat. And that was with a sweater underneath. Further more, with this coat my legs are far more covered, but my legs did not feel much warmer. I have pants and long-johns underneath, so I expected to be much warmer with this long coat, vs no leg coverage with my down coat.
The biggest shock was on the bus. I found a seat, only to discover that while sitting on the coat I was colder than ever. The coat was cold from being outside, and it seams that it could not insulate against itself. I have never experienced anything like it.
Then put my arm against the window to find my arm get very cold. The coat cannot insulate against touching a cold window.
I don't believe it, but it seems the insulation below the waist and in the sleeves is practically nonexistent. It especially useless against direct contact with anything cold, even the outside of the coat. I never experienced anything like and don?t understand how it is possible on a winter coat.
But the worst part yet is the hood. The first time I tried it was on very windy 50 degree day. I was not hot, which should have been a warning sign. A huge gust of wind hit me from the side. My head got so cold I checked to see if maybe the hood was not on. Guess what, it was on. The wind went through it, or around it like it was nothing.
I tightened up the hood as far as it could go, and it helped, wind still gets inside the good somehow, even with a hooded sweatshirt underneath. Something that never happened with my old down coat or any other winter coat before.
The hood obviously has no wool or fleece or fur lining and just cannot to stand up the wind on this supposedly wind proof coat, just like the sleeves and the bottom half.
Beyond not being warm, this coat is extremely heavy, twice as heavy as my down coat It is also extremely stiff and somewhat difficult to move around in.
And still, the zipper is even worse. Double zippers are often a pain but this is the worst I have encountered. Reps at the store where I bought had a hard time zipping it up and I tried several coats to see if any one would zip up easier.
After some time I have found a way to zip it up. The key, Don't Touch the Zipper. grab the coat close to the zipper ends and loosely slide it into place, maybe shake a little, then the zipper goes up. If I try to hold the zipper tight it will not zip.
Overall, I was really excited about this coat, but was extremely disappointed to find that is not warm, at least not all around. I don't know who rated it to -45 F, as it could not take a windy +50 F day.
I hate leaving bad reviews and really hope LL Bean can improve this product. I would be very happy to discus where this coat fails for me to help improve it.

The first winter coat I remember fondly was a dark green corduroy Mighty-Mac with a faux fleece lined hood. I was four or five and that was about the last time I recall being so toasty warm and comfortable when the temperature headed to single digits and below. I?ve had everything from trench coats, to down, to fleece, but not since that Mighty-Mac have I had a coat worth crowing about ? until now. Our dogs pestering me for one last walk before bed, or even waking us up for an early morning romp, no longer sends metaphorical ? or literal ? shivers through me. I throw on a pair of boots and my Nor?easter and I?m ready to take the dogs out, no matter what?s going on outside. As much as I enjoy it now, I really wish I had one back in the days of waiting at the station to catch the 7:40.

I've been wanting a full length winter coat to protect my legs from the cold/wind of winter. My wife bought this for me as a Christmas present. I love the weight, length, and warmth. I'm concerned about the quality of the zipper. It seems a coat of this cost/quality should have had a zipper made of "stouter stuff". I'm surprised when it works for me on the first try. And the "pull" that separates it from the bottom, allowing more freedom for leg movement/in and out of vehicle movement...it often "sticks". Wondering about some form of "zipper wax", but am hesitant to tinker with it for fear of voiding the possibility of return. I wouldn't even be considering a return if it weren't for the zipper concern.

I purchased the Nor'Easter Khaki coat for my father as a Christmas gift ten years ago. Dad really wore this jacket. So much so, it started to show some wear. When the jacket found it's way back to me, I decided to have it cleaned and make use of it. After all, it fit. It was warm, a nice length, great zipper and snaps, deep pockets, warm hood. It's perfect for those cold days when you're in and out of the car going to church or the grocery store. However, there was a stain on the backside that dry cleaners have not been able to remove. It's Nothing unsightly. You'd probably miss it if you didn't look for it. Long story short, I decided to buy a new coat for myself and either exchange the old for a credit, give to a nephew, or simply hang on as a spare to kick around in.
The new coat arrived on time as promised and it's a wonderful improvement over the old! First off, the Gortex is a terrific addition. It adds so much more warmth. The Khaki color is much nicer too. It's a bit deeper. (The Khaki color was on sale!) The outer shell also has the appearance of being able to repel any and all dirt. Whereas the old one had more of a cloth feel, this new coat has a water repellant shell that really looks nice and will be much more functional than the old when the wet snow and sleet flies.
The pocket design is also different. Zippers and clasps have been added instead of relying on buttons and folds. A zippered pocket along the edge of the main zipper line, on the left hand side, has been moved to the inside, over the left hand breast. It now has a clasp instead of a zipper. I liked the zippered inside pocket, but this inside pocket is just as nice. Perhaps a zipper would have helped make it more secure and accessible. It's not a large complaint bese the two upper outside pockets are zippered and easily accessible. So, a cell phone can be placed easily in any of the three pockets (two upper outside zippered pockets or inside left-hand clasp pocket.)
I also like the large lower pocket on the lefthand side. I can see this being used in any number of ways from storing a smaller 7-inch tablet to miscellaneous papers or perhaps even a small collapsible umbrella.
"Commuter Coat" is the correct description. I can understand why folks living in Chicago or Manhattan would purchase this coat. Walking is the man method of transportation. Anyone wearing this coat on a cold winter day would actually enjoy taking a walk. the cold and the snow will be held at bay.
Add a pair of LL Bean's snow sneakers (which I own), and you'll be nice and warm from head to toe.
And the old Nor'Easter coat? I'm hanging on to it. It has plenty of wear left despite the wear and tear. It's hard to believe it's been ten years for this coat. Just shows you how LL Bean clothing holds up.

My wife bought this for me to replace an older (17 years) model from LL that was goose down instead of Gore Tex, I loved the old one but, time caught up with it. This one seems to be a little longer, which I like. I think if you have to be out in winter weather and "warm" you can't find a better solution. This Gore Tex version is as great as its predecessor. I use it for cold winter dog walking and snow blowing. If you're buying this to be warm there is NOTHING to criticize. Zipper issues, the weight, the fit? Just give me warm when it's 5 degrees and the wind chill is lower and the dogs are taking their time or the snow just keeps coming.

In 2001, I bought this coat and for the past fourteen years I was very satisfied with it. This year I replaced it and overall, I'm pleased - - with the exception that it's tight across the upper body and the arm holes need more material, particularity if you are wearing a suit / sport coat.

This coat is okay for men if and only if you live in snow country/mountains. Very bulky and had to return. Not what husband wanted to wear.
Great coat, very warm but not in Virginia.

Nice coat. Honestly weighs 6lb. I bought it anticipating trip to Alaska in winter. Returned it this year and exchanged for Baxter parka.
This coat is heavy and long. Very warm - good for long walk to my office where the distance is nearly 1/2 mile outside in Colorado winter with cold and wind. But tough to get me and the coat in the car for drive to work or home. Have to take it off.
Have worn it over sport coat & tie.

I got this coat to go to Boston in Dec 2015. Of course it was warmer than expected, this coat kept the wind and the cold air out. I ordered the large and I'm not thinking I should have got the Xtra large coat. I'm right in between the two sizes and when I sit down, its a big snug. My only complaint is that the coat is heavy. I would rather have a heavy warm coat vs. light and be cool. In any case, its a great coat

Rated 5 out of 5 by BeanEagle High quality and well designed
This is the ideal coat for an NJ to NYC commuter. The weight is not nearly as heavy and burdensome as some of the other reviews suggest. I find that the coat is reassuringly warm -- akin to the nice feeling of being under a comforter in the winter.
The outside fabric has a soft hand and is not noisy, which lends it a more professional look than some other coats. There really is not another coat like this.
The pockets are well designed. Even the lower bellows pockets are heavily insulated.
My one improvement would be to make the collar stand up taller. But, I am used to the protection the collar on an issue pea coat offers, which is rare to find in any other type of coat besides sailing foul weather gear. I suppose that this collar is a compromise for fashion.
You should not hesitate to buy this coat if you are on the fence. This is a true greatcoat.
Also, other reviews express concern about the zipper, but I have found the zipper to work flawlessly and without any difficulty.
