in taking my youngest daughter to college we put her bedding in the cargo bag; (the bedding were wrapped still by their manufacturer when put inside the carrier). A rain storm heavily soaked the entire contents in the carrier even though items were in zipped plastic bags. We ended up having to wash everything and dry the comforter and pillows. Nothing was saved.

First, this is not a new purchase. It is a replacement for one that split out at the seam after just a few uses. I think it was just a stitching error or some other weakness in the seam. Overall I was happy with the product features and ease of use. However, I doubt that I would purchase another similar product.

I needed more cargo space to take all of my daughter's "stuff" back to college. This was exactly what I needed. It was easy to put on the top, it made no noise on the 400 mile trip and it fit a lot of light space consuming items. It only comes with 4 attachment clips and I needed 8, but I was able to buy them at a hardware store for very little money.

We needed some extra space in the car for long trips, and this bag is perfect! It holds so much, and it fits on our mid-size SUV with a competitor's racks. Everything stayed dry in the rain, too. We put a thin carpet "no-skid" pad under it to protect the car and keep it in place.

Rated 1 out of 5 by morecampingwithkitties Yikes! This was a mistake!
I'm the same campingwithkitties that gave a glowing review of this car carrier after realizing it was easy to mount on the roof and looked like a good carrier. The problem came when I left for my drive to Florida from Colorado and stayed in State Parks the whole way with my tent. I had packed my brand new expensive clothes for Naples, FL in the carrier thinking the waterproof feature would work. Well, after arriving in Florida, my super rain-soaked beautiful clothes had molded and smelled horrible. The rain not only got through the Thule bag, but also through the plastic bags the clothes were packed in. It has taken me 2 trips to a laundromat and 3 machines each time to wash these "Naples worthy" clothes enough to get clean. They were dryclean only, but I didn't want to pay that much so I've washed them. What a mess and very costly. I do not recommend this product to anyone who may get rain on the roof... which means pretty much anybody!

The price is excellent for this well-made cargo bag. It attaches easily to my roof rails and adds alot of extra space.

Our Thule survived our beach trip including the periodic rain we received along the way. The beauty of this product versus the hard shell carriers is that it has some "give" to it that allows more stuff to be crammed in. We packed five collapsible beach (camping-type) chairs, a beach tent, and two umbrella strollers with room to spare. However, I wouldn't suggest packing anything that is water pershisable unless it is protected. We did have a little rain penetrate when we stopped for a lunch break.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Dadjag You'll be sorry
I've owned 2 of these bags and they sadly do not live up to LLBean's high standards. My first bag lasted exactly one trip. Trip 1: Upon arriving home, we noticed that much of the waterproof lining was flaking off the interior of the bag, leaving only a open weave, screen-like material. After contacting Thule, they arranged for me to make a swap for a new one at a local bike & ski shop. Trip 2: Once again, after one usage (CT to Seattle), the same thing happened to the bag. Thule says that the contents of the bag must be packed tightly, or the bag material will "flutter and deteriorate" in the wind. Now Thule wants to give me "Thule credit" for the value of the bag - but that would mean that I am stuck getting either the same inferior bag, or something much more costly I'd prefer not spending the money on. You've been warned - It's your call.
