This reel worked great for me while trout fishing in New Mexico. The drag is smooth, and it strips quietly. It has a nice finish, and it looks great on my Double-L 4 wt. 9' rod.

I own one for a 5 wt. and one for a 7 wt and have had no problems at all. They have preformed flawlessly after being dunked even in a gravel steam bed.
I would give these reels a 5 star rating

I bought this reel around Jan. 2013. I fished the Double L #2 hard this summer. I caught many smallmouth bass as well as sunfish, catfish, and carp. This reel is the BOMB!!!!! No problems what so ever. A quick rinse in the sink after a week in the muddy river, and as good a new.
The quality is what you would expect from LL Bean. I do not think I will ever have a problem with this reel, but if so, LL Bean will stand behind it. Their bullet-proof warranty is what makes me a LL Bean customer. I can not say enough about their fantastic customer service.
I am and will continue to be an LL Bean fan!!!!!!

Double L #4... I own 3. Just returned from a 10 day float trip in Alaska fishing trophy rainbows&salmon on Moraine Creek and the Alagnak River. After repeated dunking, multiple back to back 25 yard runs, being dropped on rocks and 6 days of rain..... All 3 reels performed flawlessly.

After debating between the Streamlight Ultra package and the Double L, I decided to splurge and go for the upgraded package. I couldn't be happier with this reel! It is a solid build with a beautiful finish, perfect weight, and an amazing drag system.
The drag is my favorite thing about this reel. I used my #2 reel on a 5Wt rod to fish for salmon this summer in British Columbia. I had always enjoyed how easy it was to adjust the drag system when fishing for medium to large trout in California, but was very impressed with the strength of the drag when I tested its boundaries salmon fishing. It was flawless... I landed 21 salmon in one day on this little #2 reel, and it held every fish with ease and allowed for simple adjusting in real time.
One thing you should know about this reel is the sound that it makes. It is a very quite reel with a soft click. If you are used to, and appreciate the notorious clicking sound of a good fly reel, this one is noticeably different. However, I have come to appreciate the quiet sound and smooth feel this reel has to offer; enough to purchase another in #3 size.
Great quality reel! For the money this was an excellent purchase, and I am very happy with it after using it for over a year.

Last spring I purchased a Thomas and Thomas 5 wt. rod. I couldn't wait to get home to fish with the rod so I stopped at the LL Bean Lebanon N.H. store and picked up what I thought was a cheap reel. To my surprise the Double L reel is fantastic. I am still using it with the T&T Paradigm. It looks and functions exceptionally well.
I went to the Freeport store and purchased one for my wife's new new two handed Spey rod.

I have had this item for over a year and I think that is enough time for me to "use the item before reviewing it". Matter of fact the reel works better than your reviewer.

Rated 3 out of 5 by NewLLBeanShopperxyz Great reel, but it broke
This is a nice product. It's good looking, light weight, nice feel, the spool is a very simple to remove.
Unfortunately the drag adjustment knob on mine got hard to turn after about one years use and then it finally froze. I admit that it got dipped into a few rivers, but still, this was unexpected.
Unfortunately, there is no way to completely disassemble the reel since part of it is glued together. So home repair on the drag control is not possible.
Fortunately, Bean stands behind their guarantee and a new reel is on the way.
I would have rated this reel a 5 if the drag adjustment had not failed.
