I wanted hiking sticks, not for heavy hiking but for my long walks near home. These were the inexpensive sticks but I really can't see why I would want anything else. When I walk with my dog I use one - it helps with balance on bumpy, narrow trails and a frisky strong dog on leash. When I'm without my dog I use two and feel as if the sticks take on half of the work that my body does, especially when going up or down inclines. I forgot them when taking a long walk last week with a friend and was I sorry!

Rated 4 out of 5 by Shae great for hiking not so for snow shoeing
These work well for hiking/walking. However, the snow baskets fall off in the snow. I've had to retrace my steps to find the baskets buried in the snow. 0(
I ended up snowshoeing without the baskets. Very tiring.

I've had these poles for almost a year now and have used them for some very hard hiking -- routinely 15-18 miles a week in very rugged terrain. They are outstanding! I very highly recommend them. They have held up very well. I have had absolutely no problems with them. They make a gigantic difference in the hiking -- even more than I thought they would. I initially was thinking of getting the ones with the springs inside, but am very glad that I did not. These ones without the springs are lighter and simpler and work perfectly. If you use proper technique, you don't need shock absorbers. Two recommendations to go with your poles would be: (1) Get some bicycling gloves with padding the right places (preferably gloves without velcro closures that will get in the way). You really do need to use gloves with any poles. And then (2) be sure you learn how to use proper technique with the poles. To use them without proper technique will do you little or no good. Technique is crucial. I found that the DVD by Jayeh Paley called Poles for Hiking, Trekking, and Walking was exceptionally helpful in showing me how to use the poles. So, get these great poles from L.L. Bean and then arm yourself with the DVD and some gloves. The poles are great -- and make an incredible difference when rightly used.

Thes poles are the first trekking poles I've ever bought/used. I purchased them because I really wasn't sure I'd like using poles. Well, I love using poles but I've learned some things in the short time I've had these.
First, you want poles with shock absorbers which these do not. They are okay if you use on the trails but when you attach rubber tips (which have to be bought separately) and use on concrete..whew...it's pretty hard on your arms and hands.
Secondly, they have to be twisted to tighten. There has been two occasions when they have loosened. So my next poles will have clasps.
The poles came with no instructions at all. I attached the baskets and lost both of them on my first hike. I realized now that they have to twist to go on. (Had to buy a second set from LL Bean).
I've thought about returning or exchanging the poles, but I think I'll hold on to them and read up more on other trekking poles and brands before making my next purchase decision.
But they did what I wanted and made me fall in love with trekking the trails with poles

These Hikelite Hiking Poles make my walking easier and safer as I go up and down hill and over crabapples and chipmunk holes on my property. Very lightweight and hold well the length you set them to. Comfortable to the hands -- nice finger grip on front to keep your hand from sliding. Have never purchased anything from LL Bean that was not good quality.

Used these poles today. I used one and my "shorter" friend used the other. We were on a moderate hike and had to cross some water crossing from rock to rock. The poles helped us keep our balance as we made our way across the stream. They also worked great when we were making a steeper ascent or descent. It is important to make sure the poles are checked to make sure they are tight enough often when hiking.

THESE ARE MY FIRST HIKING POLES EVER (GETTING A BIT OLDER NOW) MY WIFE HAS BEEN USING LEKI POLES FOR YEARS. THESE HIKELITE POLES ARE VERY USER FRIENDLY - THEY ADJUST EASILY AND LOCK INTO PLACE FIRMLY. I WOULD RECOMMEND THEM.

My 15 year old son brought one pole on his first Outward Bound experience. This made the difference between a whine-y hiker and one who could manage a 50 lb pack up a mountain.
His mother (me) uses the other pole to assist long dog walking expeditions!
We both recommend these poles for young and old!
