Outside side pockets do not zip. In the end this is the reason I am returning. The back outside pocket does zip. Then when you want to access you have to unbuckle, then unzip. A bit of a pain, but at least peace of mind. 30 years ago would have been a great pack. Now the gear I typically put into a pack is just to costly / valuable. There were a lot of pros and cons to the pack, A Leatherman fell out a side pocket as I was prep packing, and having that on my mind was somehow to much. The buckles were noisy, the other noticeable con. Really nice pack, just not for me. Was a lot to like about it. So close.

i wasn't aware of back packs constructed of waxed cotton. as an avid old school motorcyclist, i have been using jackets and pants of a similar material for years. although my riding apparel is more coarse and has a waxier finish, i'm sure this pack will last me for years to come....and if it doesn't, i have the outstanding ll bean guarantee to fall back on. i'm excited to start beating this bag up a bit and getting the patina started. i'll keep you all posted...! ! !

I had been searching for the best pack for my needs and this is it. As a college student, I needed something to cary great big books and a place to put my pencils and pens. The front pocket was perfect for the little things; I just left the inner compartment unzipped and clipped my pens to that.
I am also a nature nut and was always short on space for my field guides and other gear like snake tongs and nets. Underneath the two side pockets are slots that are perfect for sliding a net into. Now I don't have to lug my tongs and net around with me when I'm looking for reptiles! Bean's park finder also provided me with near by places for my little expeditions.

I was surprised to see all the little extra compartments and pockets inside the bag for securing little items. This bag looks like its been with you for years when you get it. The materials are soft and worn with quality. It's a great mix of old vintage with modern updates.

The Rucksack is very sturdy and perfect for International travel. I purchased this for my son for his trip to Ireland this summer. It will be able to hold all the items he needs and fit in the carryon compartment. Based on what I saw this rucksack should last forever and one extra day! Both he and I love it.

This backpack/rucksack is the best one I have ever tried . I am in college now and during high school, I went through a backpack every year. This one has a lot of room and the straps are really comfortable.

I think this bag is great in terms of volume and number of pockets but I think there are a few improvements that can be incorporated to make this a better bag.
(1) The shoulder straps are thin and a little uncomfortable with heavier loads. I think a little more padding would go a long way.
(2) I think the waxing on the cotton is thin and not nearly as impregnated as it should be. This is a detail that I think is important for the bag to be comparable to nylon bags.

It is a bit pricey but I think it is worth it. Good size interior and very usable and large outside pockets. I particularly like the shoulder straps and the padding used. Nicely made and tough all around. There is one draw back to this bag. Family members see it and want one...so I had to buy one for my niece who is in the Navy...I like this niece....so it was worth it...but others....not so much.

I purchased this for my daughter whom is spending a semester abroad and plans to travel while there. She can only take a small carry on when traveling and this fit the needs to a T. Quality made. Useful! Good Looking! A+++++
