Rated 5 out of 5 by Larry1959 Nice pack
I bought this pack because I loved the rugged look. It's a great pack with lots of room and carries well. I would rate this a pack a 4.5 for only one reason - the buckles on the pockets. The very reason I bought the pack is the biggest detractor. The buckles look great but are cumbersome to use.

I use this pack daily for hauling my laptop and files for work during the week and as my photography backpack on the weekends. It's versatile enough to handle both. The seams appear double stitched and the wax canvas is quite thick. I have not experienced quality issues as described in other reviews. The loops above each side pocket are unexpectedly handy for umbrellas and small camera tripods. Although the main compartment of the bag is simply empty with no dividers, pockets have netting and zippers for loose items. It's a good idea to find a folio or second insert for a laptop as this pack does not have a laptop sleeve, but that wide open main compartment is what let's this pack be multifunctional.

The canvas body of the bag is really thin. The canvas has torn at all of the areas where the leather attaches to it. This was very frustrating because the of the price of the bag and the damage happening from casual use with one month.

Adorable, comfortable, sturdy. Not enough pockets on the inside but overall very good product.

As many reviewers have pointed out, this is an excellent overall bag. One thing I haven't seen many mention - but is very important to me - is the firm back. This bag really holds its shape when you pack it, sits up nice when you set it on a rock to dig through it, and doesn't allow the stuff inside to smoosh into your back. I've loaded mine up with king boletes and they came through fine, where a soft back rucksack would have allowed them to smash into my back. Excellent features and terrific durability. Plus, it looks just outstanding - like something Doc Watson would have wore while traipsing across the moors.

Like the vintage look. Will be fine as a daypack. Canvas could be heavier. Stitching and seams will prove themselves over time and
usage. Generally very satisfied and I know the L.L.Bean warranty will
make up for any future issues. Rugerman

The threads on virtually all the straps began to unravel almost immediately. I will try to send this back. Very poor quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by trouthog88 It only gets better
I have several day packs and this in my go to. Muli Functional, great fit just the right weight. I use it every day in work, laptop, slates, note books, heavy tools, samples, water bottles and more and it really takes a beating. I am in the aviation industry this pack gets thrown around alot. Yanked in every direction, production plant floors confined spaces to corporate board rooms, then weekend bike trips. The product continues to get better looking and seems to not get dirty and soiled like the nylon hitech type. For me it accommodates everything I have need for with comfort. I would really like to see real fleece on the straps or more bulk. Mr &Mrs Bean you did it once more thanks for the great work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by BackpackJack71 Tattered after light use
A nice looking retro style pack, but unfortunately I noticed all the leather straps showing loose threads at all of the seams. Since my pack only endured very light occasional use, I decided to return it to my local LL Bean retail store since I felt that a pack with a $139 price tag should not appear "ratty" looking after minimal use. I shall see how the replacement pack holds up.

I thought the cotton would be thicker and sturdier. The photo must show a pack jammed with paper balls as the pack will not stand up on its own. I thought the wax treatment would be heavier and provide more water repellency protection.
I am most disappointed with the leather used in the straps and trim. It appears to be bonded leather with a sewn on finish. I am not that hopeful as to the durability of these straps down the line. They feel unsubstantial and cheap.
Straps of full grain leather, thicker packcloth and more oil waxing treatment would have made a nicer pack that would have had me confident that this would last years into the future even with daily use. It seems that LL Bean went for the retro look without using the period correct quality materials.
On first impressions alone, cannot recommend this to a friend
