I absolutely love these boots. They are incredibly comfortable after the short break in period (around a week). The leather becomes so soft and supple, it's amazing. It starts out a very dark brown, and with wear starts to become more reddish/orange. They are slightly aggravating trying to put on, but that's expected with a 10" boot. They also do bleed a little bit when brand new, so I would wear socks you don't mind getting stained for the first few days or so.

As per usual, LLBean exceeded my expectations. The bison leather and red rubber soles feel like slippers after only a week. Thank you LL Bean.

these were a holiday gift last winter, replacing my venerable bean pac shoes (which were purchased in 1985). i love how these fit, with a little more room for thick socks. the bison leather is fabulous - feels broken in right out of the box, yet it wears extremely well and was easy to waterproof. i like the look of the red soles, too. note, the soles wear a little more quickly than the tan soles on my previous pair of maine hunting shoes.

Bought these for my adult son. He read reviews and ordered a size down, and they fit perfectly. He loves the soft bison leather.

by BChicago Great! Read for sizing, quality, and modifications
The only thing more American than Bean Boots might be Bean Boots made with American Bison hide. Here's my detailed experience with them first about sizing, then the quality, and then the necessary modification I had to make.
Sizing, the BIG ISSUE:
(Consider I wanted to use these with thin socks in Spring rain and thick socks for Winter snow)
My feet are 12.5 medium, for shoes with less lacing I usually get size 12 and they stretch comfortably over time to be perfect. But with boots I always get 13 to have a comfortable space inside since the more extensive lacing holds it tight on the foot.
Hearing these run large, and after chatting online with a super kind customer service representative, I ordered a 12 of these boots, 1 size down.
I tried them on with medium thickness wool socks (my thickest), and even another pair of cotton socks beneath. I still had 1.5" of space in front of my front toes and at least an inch above them, plus a half inch in the heel and what felt like a half inch on either side. My foot could move back and forth inside the boot like it was swimming, even with all laces as tight as they could go. This was way too big. I can't imagine a sock thick enough to have made it work.
I had them exchanged for 11's, 2 sizes down from my boot size and 1.5 sizes down from my shoe size, and these are fine, but still a bit wide. They are bigger inside than my size 13 boots, proven by the ability of the generic shearling insole to slightly move around inside when inserted and the ease in which I can insert and remove my size 13 cedar shoe trees.
There's no doubt, the fit is funny because it's large and the rubber is so flexible and soft. I would have preferred to have these fitted in a store with varying widths but they didn't have them in stock locally.
Customer service was excellent throughout- free next day exchange shipping and helpful phone support with a fast refund for the first pair when they got them back. Good automated communication to keep me up to date as well.
The quality is excellent the leather is very tough Maine-dyed Bison. The stitching is superb these boots will not come apart.
I'm disappointed that there was glue caked on the stitches around where it meets the rubber on the 11's when they arrived though. I was able to remove it with a wet cloth before I polished them but it undermined the experience a bit and looked bad out of the box.
The extremely soft nature of this red rubber sole won't be able to withstand pavement pounding in Chicago in my case. My size (6'4'' 195 lbs), walking frequency (I walk everywhere) and walking style is tough on toes and outer heels considering the leather and rubber soles I have made for such a life on other shoes wears quickly. These would be more ideally suited for a dirt road customer dealing minimally in pavement. However, I only plan to wear these in foul weather so they should handle the task.
I also don't know how to care for this rubber on the uppers and wish LLBean had a product for Bean Boot rubber care.
To get these boots on and off you have to UNLACE the entire upper half of the shoe! I'm not exaggerating- I had to remove the laces out of 4 of the 8 eyelets each time I put them on or took them off. I knew right away I wouldn't have the patience for that so....
CRUCIAL Recommended Modification:
I replaced the top four eyelets with brass speed hooks at my local cobbler, who installed them right over the original eyelets while I waited. Now they're perfect and A BREEZE to get on and off! I've attached a picture to show the speed hooks with two ways to lace them.
I hope to enjoy these boots for the rest of my life just like my grandfather does with his Bean Boots, and I hope this review improves everyone's experience on the consumption, manufacturing, and service sides!

Rated 5 out of 5 by cathpah Absolutely beautiful - go at least one size down
I bought these and the boot from the Signature line, and these are just so much better looking. I also love the distinctive red sole.
Be sure to order at least one full size down. I'm generally a size 9 (occasionally a 9.5), but I ordered these in a size 8, and could've maybe even gone down to a 7. A little silly that the sizing is so off, but well worth it in the end.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Cheesemonger Great Boot, sole doesn't last
I'm a little surprised at the other reviews saying that these boots have lasted a long time. I wear mine a fair amount, but they certainly are not my only winter boot, especially considering that they are not insulated. Mine are shot after 2 years as the soles have worn completely away, though I would say they were getting very slippery after the end of the first season. They were a great set of boots, comfortable and attractive, but I wished they would last a longer, (also, what happened to wide sizes LLbean? and why was it so hard for me to find these shoes on your website?) you can get them resoled (and I probably will, but annoying as its just about to get really rainy), but it'll take a month or so to get them back. For two years, they may be well worth the money (probably are), but don't go thinking these are good for 10 years as some other reviews may suggest. Also if you are outside for any extended period of time get the insulated ones, as the rubber will suck the heat right out of you feet, even with the superior bean socks.

I love these boots. Made in Maine and great quality. I live in Minnesota and have been wearing (and biking in) these boots everyday and my feet stay warm (surprisingly). I honestly have no complaints and definitely recommend them.

My 2nd pair of Bean Boots in 20 years. They fit great and are very comfortable. One thing to note is that the Bison leather doesn't come out of the box looking like the picture. It's a solid dark brown, but after a few wears I can tell that it will lighten up to look like the boot in the picture.

Found these boots fit great right out of the box. Already had a pair of 6" regular bean boots and still do. Ordered a size smaller than I wear normally and that worked as well. I wear these in the Sierras winter around the cabin and at home here in So Cal when it's sloppy and rainy in the backcountry while bird hunting. These came w/an extra pair of laces, which I needed cause the first pair were too short.Great boots!
