I received this watch as a gift (that I requested because I thought LL Bean meant good quality).
I returned the first one as defective. It lost several minutes a month.
The replacement has a defective band. I give up.
I am returning it for a refund.

I liked the watch but the watch band needed to be replaced after a few mounths of use. The leather on the strap wears down quick.

I?m an 81-year-old senior citizen, and I needed a watch that was easy for me to read the time, and without all the additional dials and hands that I did not need. For my needs the extra dials only add confusion to the matter. Many of the quality watches on the market have hands that so small that one has to study the watch to know the time. Accuracy of time keeping was also an important factor for me, I purchased the Self-Illuminating Field Watch and have had it for about a week; It fills all my needs perfectly. Regarding accuracy I set the time on the watch from my computer, which has the time updated daily. In the week that I have had the watch the time has not varied by even 1 second. Thanks LLBean for providing quality products and service. You certainly have my vote of confidence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ProfCook Straightforward, functional watch
Simple functional design. Not a diver's watch. No stopwatch. No world time in five countries. No bling. Not showy or prestigious.
It's a watch. It keeps time accurately. The hands are visible and easy to read in any light. It's quicker to read an analog display than a digital one. It works very well in low light or in complete darkness. The image of the watch in darkness is deceptive: the numbers do not glow at all in the dark. Which is fine because the tritium vials work exceptionally well and the red one at 12 works perfectly.
Nice size. It's not particularly thin, but it's not too thick and the dial diameter is modest. Nice smooth edges that don't get caught on clothing including the setting knob. Good watch band that needs to be worked a bit to soften it up before wearing it. It's more than long enough for me with five holes for larger wrists that I'm not using. My wrist is about 8 1/2" in circumference.

I'm sorry to say this watch did not meet my usual high expectation for quality from L.L. Bean. The numerals and hash marks on watch face are blurry, not crisp and the watch is just too small. Save your money and stick with either the Classic Field Watch or Vintage Field Watch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by GDavid Easy to read and not pretentious
This is a classic watch that is light on the wrist and attractive without being pretentious. It is easy to read even under low illumination conditions and without my glasses.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MEAndrewD Nice watch but too small
I ordered the watch with high hopes. Reviews looked ok, some said it was small (I wasn't looking for a large watch) The only problem was the band was too small. I could only get the watch to close on the last loop of the band. I liked the size of the watch face but the band was too small. Sent it back since it didn't fit. If you have a small wrist you should be fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by HarpswellMan Rugged and Accurate!
Just bought this watch after having previously owned the less expensive LL Bean field watch. Seems to be very rugged and well made. Illumination is not as bright as I had expected and hoped for but perhaps continued exposure to bright sunlight will change that.
The second hand is a little off and doesn't exactly line up with the indices.
I wish LL Bean would include a black nylon strap in addition to the leather which they had done in the past.
All and all, I like the watch and I expect it will live up to it's $239 price tag. (I think this is a $50 increase over what this watch cost last season?).

Rated 4 out of 5 by coutfulh great visibility of dial
we bought this watch for our son and, though he finds all watches "irritating at times" , he likes the high visibility of the dial, both during the day and at night.
His rating of 4 reflects the "sometimes irritating" aspect of a watch in general.
I think the watch is handsome, not too large and just right!

Rated 5 out of 5 by IIbeanornotIIbean Nice watch
Looked for a while for a tritium watch that was water-resistant enough for swimming, not too big, decent quality, and not too expensive - meaning less than a average car payment.
Relatively small, easy to read watch; seems well made, all but a few second marks line up with hand. Not at all bling-y or pseudo-rugged, fits well under dress shirts unlike some other popular tritium watches.
Lume is very good. Definitely does not outshine a fully charged dive watch (think monster), however within an hour roughly equal, and at 3 am much better!
Would be really, really great if it came with a sapphire crystal, but Bean's offers $10 crystal replacement. Can't comment on how long it takes.
Have not gone swimming with watch as that would require a different band in my book. Speaking of band - nice water-resistant leather, but I have pretty small wrists and some might find it a bit narrow.
Time will tell regarding ruggedness - I am not very easy on watches. LL Bean is truly outstanding in backing their products presuming you don't do something stupid with it (and sometimes even if you do).
