Rated 5 out of 5 by GCSitts Stays Lit All Night, Keeps Good Time
This is my second purchase of this watch model. I wore the first one for many years before it was lost.
I like to wear a watch at night and the self-illuminating hands on this model stay lit at a consistent brightness unlike the fading of typical glow-in-the-dark watches. That feature is the primary reason I spent this much for the watch, as it is otherwise just a basic watch with a calendar window.
However the watch proved to be very reliable and durable. I was originally concerned that the lit hands might shorten battery life but that doesn't seem to be the case; batteries last between one and two years.
The case and the crystal both seem to be rugged and durable; I am active and hard on watches. Over the years I noticed there were no shock or scratch issues.
Bottom line: I bought the second one because I loved the first and couldn't find anything similar to replace it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Benner great watch with a slightly problematic movement
I love this watch. The 38mm size is perfect - far smaller than most men's watches on the market today (especially tritium watches), but well in line with the sorts of watches your grandfathers would have worn. Because it's smaller, it slips easily under a shirt cuff, the crown doesn't dig into your wrist, is less likely to snag on stuff, and in general is just more comfortable and practical, whether for everyday use or use in the field. From a functional perspective, the sandblasted case finish is nice because it doesn't show scratches easily, and the screw-down crown is a great touch that helps you feel pretty secure in the watch's water resistance.
The tritium is great. It's not as bright as freshly-charged, conventional luminescent paint, but unlike conventional lume, the tritium will glow constantly throughout the night. Within about 15 minutes, the "bloom" of conventional lume will have subsided and the tritium will be brighter.
My main complaint is with the watch movement. I've owned a couple of these watches. The first one started to slow noticeably after the most recent battery change. It now runs a couple minutes slow per month. (Normal spec for quartz watches is 15-30 seconds per month.) Based on other reviews, it seems as though this phenomenon is relatively common. I wonder if L.L. Bean has considered using a different movement with greater long-term accuracy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by mmpp Great BUT
my watch is now about 6 yrs old and give it high marks in every way except the bands are cheap and only last me about a year and then fall apart. I don't swim or shower with my watch so think its time for LL Bean to insist on a better quality band for the price

Rated 5 out of 5 by NVABuyer Great Buy
This is a great watch. I was surprised how often I have used the low light/darkness capabilities. I considered replacing my 20 year old LLBEAN field watch with another one just like it but the extra money for this watch is well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by fred666 Small size works well
I actually thought the diameter of the watch would be like other watches I have. It is about 30mm across the bezel. Just fine for me. A light watch with great night viewing. Date number still a readable size.

Rated 4 out of 5 by sbien521 near perfect
This watch is near perfect in form and function. i would give it a 5 in a year if it continues to be as reliable as it has been for the past 4 months. all i wanted from this was a reliable, easy to see time piece- not a phone, altimeter, camera, or alarm clock - and that is what this is. the self illuminating face is easy in any and all light conditions from total darkness to bright sun. the tritium tubes degrade over the years and i guess i will take what comes.
i have not subjected this to traumas such as impact or drowning so i can't say it stands up to more than the usual rigors of an active life, which for mean includes mountain biking, splitting wood, rock climbing...
this watch deserves its status as a classic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Grunt2Preacher So far, so good.
I received my field watch only a couple of weeks ago. So far it seems to keep time well and I have not experienced any difficulty with the band. Some of the other reviewers expressed dissatisfaction with the band but it has been comfortable. My previous watch bands have been metal but I have gotten used to the leather. Time will tell how durable it really is. The one characteristic about the watch that I really like is its simplicity. So far, so good...

I've purchased 1 pocket watch and 3 wrist watches from LLBEAN
This Swiss Self Illuminating Water Proof Field Watch TA245381
is the best viewing watch in darkness and 300ft Water Proof for
sure, also very rugged for every day use. The size is excellent
though I changed to a black nylon one piece strap with stainless
steel buckle. only a few dollars and other colors also, and just
slide strap over through watch pin then under watch and come
up and over pin on the other side of watch. They are strong
and light straps and work well with water, humidity, rain, sweat,
outdoors, etc...very very accurate and easy to read with black
watch dial and white hands and white numerals and red second
hand and a white date numbers. purchased this model 1/11/2012
and the battery still going strong still and so nice looking watch
Sincerely, Carl j

Rated 5 out of 5 by LLBucky Perfect watch for me!
I love this watch! Even though it's technically a men's watch, it is perfect for me and I'm a woman. It is not too big, and the band is a nice width. I am so excited to be able to see the time without my glasses on, and to be able to see the time in the dark. This watch is worth the money.
