Bought the women's field watch for my wife several years ago; she wears it daily. I purchased the self illuminating model a few weeks ago and am pleased, too. It's simple and straightforward and accurate. The face is inset somewhat, so the thickness is a bit more than expected but is not cumbersome in any way. The strap is high quality Italian leather, a bit stiff initially but very comfortable and good looking. The illumination pushes up the price for this model, which may or may not be worth it for some. I don't begrudge LLBean a fair profit for a very excellent product, though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BuddyP66 Exactly the kind of watch I was looking for!
I have been an LL Bean shopper for years but had never looked at its watches. After searching many stores for the watch I was looking for, I finally checked LL Bean and found exactly what I was looking for! This watch is not bulkly and has easy to see numbers and lights up incredibly in the dark. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a practical and sharp looking watch!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by RedSoxFanatic Watch has a Mechanical Issue
First, let me say I really like the look of this watch. My issue is with its construction. I have had four different watches of this model, and each time I had to send it back with the same issue. The crown continuously comes loose, pops out, and stops the watch from functioning at all.
I started using this watch in 2010. I'm not sure why this happens, but I have contacted customer service many times about this issue. Bean has always replaced the watch without question or fail, but each new watch continued to have the same issue. Finally, after the fourth attempt, I asked for a refund rather than a replacement.
Being a teacher, I'm not exactly doing hard manual labor or putting the watch through the ringer. It must be a design flaw. Others are leaving five stars, so they must enjoy the watch, but to have the same issue four times leads me to believe the watch has design and construction issues.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Bryceman good watch
I've owned several GTSL (self illuminating# wristwatchs before. This watch is just as good or better. I think it is made in the same factory and by the same company that manufactures the Luminox brand of watch. The reason why I purchased this one is because it is the smallest GTSL watch I could find. It is still a nice size but I have a relatively smaller wrist so the 40mm plus models were just a dad too big. This one is just right except that it is a bit on the thick side. I didn't like the leather strap that comes with it but for me it doesn't matter because I have several Nato style nylon straps which I interchange. These straps just slip on and off under the strap pins in seconds and are a better match for this style of watch. They are also dirt cheap on ebay so I have several different styles/colors. It has a swiss made quartz movement as opposed to a "swiss parts " movement. That means it was assembled in Switzerland. When checked against Internet time it gains approx. 3 seconds a week #12 sec a month) which is very good. Much better accuracy then a Rolex! Even high end mechanical movements can't match a quality quartz movement. I recommend this watch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by sonnyboyhunter this is the one!!!
This is a watch exactly the same as the one I bought in early 70's. I used it constantly for 30 years. Yes!....I had a new crystal installed, an a new watch band(orig just rotted to pieces), an batteries replaced. It kept perfect time.....I mean exactly on the button for years an years, until it got tired and quit. I have been looking for a replacement for weeks, an this watch is still the one to get after all those years..........sooooo , I just bought my second watch, exactly the same as the one in early 70's......YOU WON'T BE SORRY!!!!....sonny

Rated 3 out of 5 by 2Xtalldude Great Swiss Made Tritium Watch w/Cheap Wristband
While the Watch Itself Is very well made It comes with a cheap small child sized wristband which Is outrageous for LL Bean to be selling at such a high price. I have an 8 1/2 Inch wrist and the wristband was so tight it not only cut the circulation off In my hand several times but caused the cheap pins in the band to pop off the watch Itself. I took It to a local watch repair man who sold me large genuine Lizard skin band for $40.00. Now I wear It comfortably 24 hours a day but I wish Bean would look In to this quality control problem after complaining to them several times and reading similar reviews from other customers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by GCSitts Stays Lit All Night, Keeps Good Time
This is my second purchase of this watch model. I wore the first one for many years before it was lost.
I like to wear a watch at night and the self-illuminating hands on this model stay lit at a consistent brightness unlike the fading of typical glow-in-the-dark watches. That feature is the primary reason I spent this much for the watch, as it is otherwise just a basic watch with a calendar window.
However the watch proved to be very reliable and durable. I was originally concerned that the lit hands might shorten battery life but that doesn't seem to be the case; batteries last between one and two years.
The case and the crystal both seem to be rugged and durable; I am active and hard on watches. Over the years I noticed there were no shock or scratch issues.
Bottom line: I bought the second one because I loved the first and couldn't find anything similar to replace it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Benner great watch with a slightly problematic movement
I love this watch. The 38mm size is perfect - far smaller than most men's watches on the market today (especially tritium watches), but well in line with the sorts of watches your grandfathers would have worn. Because it's smaller, it slips easily under a shirt cuff, the crown doesn't dig into your wrist, is less likely to snag on stuff, and in general is just more comfortable and practical, whether for everyday use or use in the field. From a functional perspective, the sandblasted case finish is nice because it doesn't show scratches easily, and the screw-down crown is a great touch that helps you feel pretty secure in the watch's water resistance.
The tritium is great. It's not as bright as freshly-charged, conventional luminescent paint, but unlike conventional lume, the tritium will glow constantly throughout the night. Within about 15 minutes, the "bloom" of conventional lume will have subsided and the tritium will be brighter.
My main complaint is with the watch movement. I've owned a couple of these watches. The first one started to slow noticeably after the most recent battery change. It now runs a couple minutes slow per month. (Normal spec for quartz watches is 15-30 seconds per month.) Based on other reviews, it seems as though this phenomenon is relatively common. I wonder if L.L. Bean has considered using a different movement with greater long-term accuracy.
