This watch was just what I was looking for. I wanted self-luminating without the Luminox price. The dial's easy to read and if anything goes wrong, I know I can count on L.L. Bean's guarantee. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by JamesDB LlBean Self Illuminating Field Watch
This watch was a purchase made about two years ago as a replacement for a $125 Swiss Army Red Ring watch that lasted from the 1980s to 2012, so it was going to be a tough challenge to replace. After the Swiss Army Watch I bought at least two other over $50 and under $100 watches as replacement, they all crashed. The LLBean watch has, so far, met every obstacle survived them all in a way that is most helpful re the illumination dial. The dial is bright, if you work at night, or in dark places, if you sleep, or you just like to keep the lights off, there is no fumbling around for a glow- button to push no glasses needed and no need to find an errant moon beam for light.
The case is rugged with a screw in winding stem that works easily to set time and date. The date numeral is not lost on the dial and is easy to find. Back to rugged... The case seems virtually crush proof, however the crystal is raised slightly above the body, meaning the watch is not particularly thin. There is a trade off between a dress watch and a field watch, and this watch leans strongly to field, go chop wood with it, work on a tractor, and don't bother dropping the watch in your pocket for safekeeping, when it gets dark you won't have to guess what time it is. This is a fine, durable, readable watch worth buying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Troutn2 Nice Watch
I looked for a watch that would allow me to see the time in low light/no light for a while. Many of the watches I saw were much more expensive with features I didn't want or need. I checked out Bean's Regular Field Watch and then saw this Self Illuminating model. I read the many reviews for it, most of which I thought were very helpful and ordered it. It looks great! It has exactly the features I wanted. It is easy to see the time in low/no light levels. I set the watch time to coincide with a satellite controlled weather station and my cellphone. Since syncing it with those two devices, it has kept perfect time-to the second. I am very well pleased with this purchase!

Rated 4 out of 5 by DJJazz Great but...
First the good news.
The watch keeps great time, seems to be water resistant (although I don't deliberately test it; I just get it wet occasionally), and is easy to read both night and day.
I need reading glasses and some watches require that I have glasses on in order to see the dial. I have no such problem with this watch. The contrast is great and it's easy to read. At night it is also great. If I wake up in the dark, I can easily see the illuminated hands and dial.
Now the (possible bad news).
My first watch died after about 4 years. I would expect a watch like this to last longer. But the LL Bean being LL Bean, I had no hassle getting a replacement.
Hope the second one lasts longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by AlNY Exactly what I was looking for.
This watch replaces a watch I received as a gift many years ago at HS graduation. That watch was lost and I looked for one that was similar. This one is, simple to read face at a glance and a date window. It also looks and feels rugged, very well pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RomRom Outstanding watch!
My wife just presented me with this watch for my birthday (after heavily lobbying from me) and I am delighted. The primary factors influencing my interest in the watch were: Self luminescence, overall styling, and the LL Bean name.
I have owned a Luminox Seal Team watch with tritium hands since 1997, and have found the luminous hands to be invaluable, especially since I work night shift and am often out and about in the dark. I didn't care for the Luminox's styling particularly as I am not a SEAL, nor a SCUBA diver. In contrast, the LL Bean watch has a simple, clean and legible watch face, making it very easy to read in all conditions, including, of course, pitch black darkness. It is not too large (though a tad bit thick) so it doesn't feel like I'm wearing a hockey-puck on my wrist. The watch band is a simple black leather, and is one of the nicest bands I've ever owned on a watch. I appreciate the fact that the watch comes with a form to send the watch back to LL Bean for battery, crystal, or band replacement as I would really like to keep this exact same band on it for life. I'll likely have them do all three repairs in 2 or 3 years to keep it looking like new.
As I've found with my Luminox hands, tritium vials have a half-life of around 15 years, meaning they start to dim markedly after that point. The watch will still work, of course, but the hands won't be as bright. I just hope in fifteen or so years LL Bean is still offering this watch as I'll buy another in a heartbeat! Highly recommended-- thanks again for a great product that exceeded my expectations!

Rated 5 out of 5 by skijo Well made and functional
This watch exhibits true craftsmanship. It is functional without having all the other accessories on it that I don't need (chrono., alarms, etc). It isn't one of these "large-faced" watches, but just a simple functional watch that keeps excellent time and looks nice. I especially like the self illuminating feature which you usually find on Luminox watches. With this feature, even my 75 year old eyes can see and read it at night without my glasses. As usual with your products, this watch is outstanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Longtime Husband likes it!
I bought this watch for my husband who has had a LLBEAN field watch for at least 10-15 years. The field watch finally gave up the ghost and so we replaced it with this one. It is just slightly larger than the old field watch, but it fits just fine. He particularly likes the way it illuminates in the dark. We think its waterproof qualities will make it especially useful on the beach.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MelonHeads Owned Three of Them
I recently bought my third of these watches. I know I'm hard on watches (banging them against walls etc.) but I'm surprised I've broken two. Both times the problem was with the winding mechanism. Once it stopped working altogether, and the second time it would not stay in place so the watch kept stopping. I also cracked the crystal of one.
The reason I keep buying them is the quality of the lighting. It is very easy to read in darkness, which is important to me. It also keeps accurate time. I just wish they were a little more durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by cabin16 Great Watch but not for the large of wrist
Good size dial and hands
Screw down crown
Scratch resistant crystal
Quality leather strap
Feels quite substantial
The not so good:
Short ?quality leather? strap
Needed to change the strap to a "long" and now it is smooth sailing. Good all around watch
