Rated 5 out of 5 by skijo Well made and functional
This watch exhibits true craftsmanship. It is functional without having all the other accessories on it that I don't need (chrono., alarms, etc). It isn't one of these "large-faced" watches, but just a simple functional watch that keeps excellent time and looks nice. I especially like the self illuminating feature which you usually find on Luminox watches. With this feature, even my 75 year old eyes can see and read it at night without my glasses. As usual with your products, this watch is outstanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Longtime Husband likes it!
I bought this watch for my husband who has had a LLBEAN field watch for at least 10-15 years. The field watch finally gave up the ghost and so we replaced it with this one. It is just slightly larger than the old field watch, but it fits just fine. He particularly likes the way it illuminates in the dark. We think its waterproof qualities will make it especially useful on the beach.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MelonHeads Owned Three of Them
I recently bought my third of these watches. I know I'm hard on watches (banging them against walls etc.) but I'm surprised I've broken two. Both times the problem was with the winding mechanism. Once it stopped working altogether, and the second time it would not stay in place so the watch kept stopping. I also cracked the crystal of one.
The reason I keep buying them is the quality of the lighting. It is very easy to read in darkness, which is important to me. It also keeps accurate time. I just wish they were a little more durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by cabin16 Great Watch but not for the large of wrist
Good size dial and hands
Screw down crown
Scratch resistant crystal
Quality leather strap
Feels quite substantial
The not so good:
Short ?quality leather? strap
Needed to change the strap to a "long" and now it is smooth sailing. Good all around watch

Rated 5 out of 5 by PeruSenior Unbelievable Accuracy
I've had this watch for 2 years now and accuracy is fantastic. I frequently check it against the government time hack website. My watch is never off more then a couple of seconds even after 3 months., The only time I have to reset the time is when the months change the number of days in the month. The dial is very easy to read in darkness. The crystal is very clear and appears to be very scratch resistant. Most important, the hands are large which is mandatory for my 82 year old eyes. From my perspective it is the perfect watch,.

Rated 5 out of 5 by becomingabeanfan Easy to read, day and night.
Purchased watch for a trip; was on a tour with a group of folks and had to be at various locations, i.e. the bus, at specific times. Did not want to rely on clock on phone; too cumbersome to remove phone from pocket to look at clock. Easy to read dial; easy to adjust time for different time zones. Very legible at night in pitch black conditions. Comfortable band; would have preferred a brown band but quickly got used to the black one. Watch came with directions regarding how to send it in for battery replacement, including the cost, crystal replacement, repairs. Hope to use if for many years. Clean, crisp numerals; can't say enough positive things about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BuckeyeHillbilly A Rare Occurrence
It's very rare these days to purchase an item that turns out to be better than you expected, but that's what this watch has turned out to be. I've had this watch for two weeks now, and every time I glance at my wrist to see the time, I find myself thinking how pleased I am with this timepiece. It's simply excellent: simple, elegant, and very high quality. I could not be more pleased with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TexasLarry Hard to beat
I've had this watch about 5 weeks now, so I can review it with some experience. This watch is pretty hard to beat if you want a good basic watch that is super-easy to see in the dark or daylight. It is a perfect size for me, and I'm a pretty big guy. I have had overly large watches and invariably I wham them on a door facing or the like. This watch is unobtrusive, which is just what you want in a field watch. Mine has been keeping super time. Very close to the atomic clock. There have been some reviewers that didn't like the strap due to it being stiff. If you take some time to break it in, it is really comfortable. Good leather is like that, and I think this is a good quality strap. I now have the watch on a nylon Zulu strap, which fits it very well. I would have liked the lug width on the watch to have been 20mm instead of it's 18mm, but that's a small matter.
The one complaint I have on the watch concerns the visibility of the numbers on the dial in the dark. It wouldn't have taken much for LLBean to have put some luminova on the numbers so they could be charged up by light, and you would have been able to see them in the dark. One of the photos shows the numbers being "lit up", but it is not valid. The numbers on this watch are just painted on with non-luminous paint. Maybe on the next iteration of this watch.
Overall, a great watch and a good value. Other watches with tritium tubes run much higher than this little jewel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LLBeanMaineHiker Smart and Comfortable
I was not sure how bright this watch would be; I was concerned it might be too bright in the dark, but it is just bright enough to be read easily. I am pleased with the size and comfort and quality. The only criticism I now have is the size of the date window. It is hard to read the number indicating the date.

Rated 5 out of 5 by teacher2257 Mostly good news about this excellent watch
I love LL Bean field watches. They are high-quality swiss-made watches but amazingly affordable - most name-brand swiss-made watches cost $500-750 and up.
I like that Bean field watches don't include complicated features like alarms, stop-watch timers, chronographs and extra mini dials. I just want a water-resistant watch that keeps perfect time, looks great, and will last for many years.
You can't go wrong with a LL Bean field watch. The only question is: which model(s) should you buy?
I have this self-illuminated model and one other (the vintage field watch with the white face, brown band, and larger diameter). I love both of them.
This self-illuminating model is nearly identical to the non-self-illuminating black men's field watch, but costs $110 more ($239 vs. $129). Is the self-illumination feature worth an extra $110?
For most people, I don't think so. The feature works, though it's not as bright as shown in the picture here. But it's definitely easier to read this watch in the dark than the non self-illuminating models.
But I don't think it's worth paying an extra $110. If I could go back, I'd probably buy the non self-illuminating model.
But even at $239, you're getting a real swiss-made watch, a high-quality time piece that looks great and will last many years.
I've been buying from LL Bean for 30 years. Everything they sell is built to last. Read through the other reviews here - the very few people who had problems contacted Bean customer service and were more than satisfied with the resolution of their issues.
