Rated 5 out of 5 by LRosie Love it, so does my husband
We have had such a sunny end of winter, I need a hat to shade my face while still keeping my head warm. I have had a hard time finding a warm hat with a brim that shades without coming so low on my forehead that I can't see out. This is the ticket- if it is colder, I wear it w/my llbean fleece ear warmers or a fleece head band. The red/plaid is pretty and traditional. The only problem is that after I wore it once, my husband decided that it is perfect for him!

Finally, a comfortable fit for a fellow with a larger than average head.

This is not the same cap that I bought a few years ago. It is lighter and the shape is not the same. The old cap kept its round shape. The new one stays slightly wrinkled.

I have this hat in Navy, Green, Red, and the Red and Black plaid (and I have a couple of extras stored away). They seem to vary ever so slightly in their fabric content depending on the color, but they are, basically, 53-55% wool and the balance is polyester, viscose, and/or other fibers. I guess if it?s over 50%, Bean feels free to call it a wool cap ? I?d prefer a higher wool content, but perhaps the manmade fibers decrease the risk of shrinking over time.
In any case, despite the relatively low wool content, I do like these caps. The fabric is soft and they are warm. As some have posted, these are not structured caps and it has no crown stiffener, which I consider to be a HUGE advantage. I hate those caps with the high, reinforced crown to allow plenty of advertising room for trucks, hybrid seeds, or chewing tobacco and I like a cap that I can remove and stick in my back pocket. This is a relatively low profile cap and I think it looks great. I keep one squashed away in the back of my seat in my Jeep, just in case.
I haven?t had any problems with discomfort from the metal buckle in the back ? and my hair is shorn close to the scalp and neither have I?ve experienced any itchiness. I normally wear a 7 ¾ to 7 5/8 inch hat and sizing has not been an issue with these caps.
As for the colors, the red is pretty true to as pictured; it is a fairly bright, scarlet red (I like it quite a bit). The green has an olive hue to it - think Filson wool mackinaw. The blue has a good amount of black in it and can appear either black or blue depending on the lighting. As someone else has noted the red and black version does have an embroidered ?LL Bean? in black thread on the front side ? it?s relatively discreet, but would be better without it. All of them have a Bean logo on the brass clasp in the back.

Got the red plaid version of this cap and I love the retro look. The size is easily adjustable and the fit is great, doesn't stick up like an Elmer Fudd cap. The cap is a wool blend with a cotton lining so it won't make your head itch. It's pretty warm, perfect for those chilly days when it's not quite cold enough for ear flaps.

Great cap for those that don't like a stocking hat. Soft and comfortable.

When it comes to cold fall and winter days, this hat is a favorite. Great profile and lined for more comfort. This hat is one of the best ball style caps I have ever purchased. The quality is just what one would expect from LL Bean. I was so happy with the hat I have a Green and a Gray one.

I wanted a winter wool cap that I could hang by the door, put on quickly and feel comfortable on my head. In addition, I wanted it keep my head warm, but not cause me to overheat. This is the perfect solution....It is very warm, as baseball caps go, looks great with both my casual winter coat and more formal topcoats. I wear it into the city on the train because of its practical simplicity.
