L.L.Bean has partnered with Wilderness Medical Associates, a respected leader in wilderness medical education since 1981, to bring you this women's-only, two-day (16-hour) introductory course on the basics of wilderness medical treatment and rescue. Both medical professionals and active outdoor enthusiasts without medical training can benefit from this instruction. All necessary equipment, including course materials, is provided. Successful completion of the course and Wilderness First Aid Certification requires full attendance and satisfactory performance on written and practical quizzes.
The first day begins with expanding your understanding of how to assess the patient, including an overview of the circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems. You'll learn to recognize fractures and dislocations. Methods of treatment covered include CPR techniques, stabilization and splints.
Day two covers how to handle a wide range of potential hazards, including: hypothermia, hyperthermia and heat illness; near drowning; frostbite and other cold injuries; lightning and electrical injuries; wounds and burns; anaphylaxis. Rescue techniques include practicing patient carries and awareness of backcountry medicine.
