The Art of Bean. For generations, the twice-a-year arrival of the Bean catalog signaled that all was right and good in a fast-changing world. Leon Leonwood Bean wrote all of the early catalog copy in direct, guileless style that fostered what one writer described as "this sense of dealing with an interested and sympathetic neighbor." During the depression era, L.L. chose uplifting cover art reminiscent of Norman Rockwell. His favorite image was Old Country Store, by artist P.B. Parsons. It appeared on five different catalog covers, including Fall 1941 edition. When L.L.'s grandson Leon Gorman took the reins, the company began commissioning original, seasonally appropriate, Maine-based images of hunting, fishing and wildlife. Over time, cover themes reflected new ways of enjoying the outdoors and captured Maine's enduring magic.
