Rated 3 out of 5 by Eddyflyman Quest Rod for My Kayak
I wanted a short fly rod for kayak fishing. Many others offered longer rods only, in heavier line weights. The Quest rod was perfect at 3wt, and 6 ft 6 in,. In addition, they give you a tube, a reel, line and backing. It is a great deal. The real is very nice, the line is nice quality, no complaints. After fishing with the rod a few times, I decided to use a 5wt line , instead of the supplied 3wt. Many folks have differing opinions on over lining a fly rod. This rod casts fine with the 3wt, but with the 5wt, it casts like a dream. You can feel it load nicely, and you can place the line where you want it. I fish in some tight spaces, and I find that I can cast accurately with my particular set up. This would be a great value, even without the reel, line, and tube. It fishes great, and is perfect for kayak fishing in small creeks. I fish warm water species, like small mouth bass, sun fish, rock, bass, etc. Highly reccomended. Next time I buy a fly rod, I will look at LL Bean first!

I get that this is an intro set up, but there are a few fundamental flaws in this kit. Unfortunately I think, keeping the price down on this item resulted in some of the components not really matching up
1) The reel is way too large for the 6'6" 3wt. I am sure the reel is the same for all the weights, and as a result the rod is off balance and feels very heavy. This reel is the same size as my 8 wt salt water reel. I think this is mentioned in other reviews as well, it is worth noting.
2) the cork is poorly finished. It looks like whoever turned this cork forgot to finish the top near the winding check. I haven't taken the plastic off of it yet, but i am afraid that this cork is not going to last very long.
3) Line - pretty average line but seems a little long. I can assure you, i will never get spooled with the 100 feet of line on a 6'6" 3 wt.
4) Rod seems nice, i am pleased with that, it is a little stiff, but i think that should be expected with a short rod like this one.
Overall I am excited to get it out on some small streams, but i will probably end up with a new reel and line before the end of this year. The rod case is great, the rod feels nice in the hand, but I hope that in the future they can match the components a little better for individual sizes.

I used this rod & reel to fish 3 of Montana's well known trout rivers. It did fine. I was able to place my casts, cast into the wind (within reason), and took several respectable fish with it. I even got complemented on it's looks from one guy at an access point. Good bargain for a first rod & reel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DVMStudent Really Impressed!
This outfit arrived only today, in time for a first trout fishing trip. So, I will up update these comments after fishing with it. However, at first impression - WOW! Could not be more pleased with the rod and reel for $120. Finish on the rod is flawless. The rod LL Bean sent me is dark burgundy, and in the sunlight even has a subtle tiger stripe effect in the finish. The reel looks, feels and operates very solidly. Looks like the aluminum reel it is, not like a plastic reel at all. I looked at three or four beginner set ups from competitors, and the Quest II is head and shoulders above those saw. I spent a lot of time practicing casting this afternoon, and was surprised how easy it was to get used to the set up and just concentrate on practice. Balance felt like I've read it was supposed to. Easily got very accurate casts at 25 and 30 yards. A slight quibble, the rod case seems to have a slight imperfection, but it is quite functional. Also wish LL Bean would find domestic suppliers; I'd have been willing to pay more for this set up. Right now, very impressed. More later.

This outfit is an awesome addition to my fly fishing arsenal. Considering the free shipping, the nice fly rod tube, and that the outfit is pre-spooled with the correct line and backing, also tapered leader, not to mention LL Bean's spectacular guarantee. These things alone are worth most of the price. It's almost like getting the fly rod and the reel for free!

This 3wt set up is perfect for the little streams we have in the Los Angeles area. It is well made and is a great value for the quality received.

It's hard to go wrong for the price. It would be nice if the rod case could accommodate the reel being left on.

L.L. Bean has done it again. They have brought a great fly fishing set-up at a decent price and their customer service, is as good as it gets. I bought my set up two years ago, and while feeding the line through on my most recent trip, the rod snapped, very unlike Bean's craftsmanship. I sent it back (they paid for my shipping) and their was a new rod on my doorstep within 3 business days. Honestly can not say enough good things about their customer service and their product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by FlyFishingRick Great Starter Outfit
This is my first fly fishing outfit. Had the privilege to attend a weekend fly fishing school and bought this outfit shortly there after. Easy to cast and care for. I purchased a six weight and it handles well and I feel comfortable with in small streams to open stillwater..

by Jmax Got me going without looking like a rookie
CONFESSION: I am brand new to fly fishing but didn't want to look like a rookie with a "starter" rod/reel that was a waste of my money or embarrassment to friends who may be more serious about their fishing (just being honest). So, I was looking for a quality combo around $100.
The Quest II quality probably can't be beat for the price and the customer service/guarantee for sure can't be beat - nobody offers anything like it. This was shipped (free, of course) in time for vacation. The rod/reel both look/feel great and the included cases made traveling stress-free. Not only did I get compliments on the beautiful rod & large reel, but (more importantly) I caught fish every time I went out!
My only experience before last week was a couple of hours wading in a Colorado river for trout with a friend who showed me the basics. Last week's vacation was on a spring-fed lake in Georgia, fishing from a canoe, so I knew everything would be different. This got me out on the water and catching fish within no time (boatload of bluegill and a young largemouth bass).
Anyone looking for the perfect balance of quality and cost has come to the right place. If you are beginning, on a budget, looking for a spare/gift, or trying a new size/weight, I highly recommend the Quest II. For what I was wanted, this was perfect.
