This outfit is an awesome addition to my fly fishing arsenal. Considering the free shipping, the nice fly rod tube, and that the outfit is pre-spooled with the correct line and backing, also tapered leader, not to mention LL Bean's spectacular guarantee. These things alone are worth most of the price. It's almost like getting the fly rod and the reel for free!

This 3wt set up is perfect for the little streams we have in the Los Angeles area. It is well made and is a great value for the quality received.

It's hard to go wrong for the price. It would be nice if the rod case could accommodate the reel being left on.

L.L. Bean has done it again. They have brought a great fly fishing set-up at a decent price and their customer service, is as good as it gets. I bought my set up two years ago, and while feeding the line through on my most recent trip, the rod snapped, very unlike Bean's craftsmanship. I sent it back (they paid for my shipping) and their was a new rod on my doorstep within 3 business days. Honestly can not say enough good things about their customer service and their product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by FlyFishingRick Great Starter Outfit
This is my first fly fishing outfit. Had the privilege to attend a weekend fly fishing school and bought this outfit shortly there after. Easy to cast and care for. I purchased a six weight and it handles well and I feel comfortable with in small streams to open stillwater..

by Jmax Got me going without looking like a rookie
CONFESSION: I am brand new to fly fishing but didn't want to look like a rookie with a "starter" rod/reel that was a waste of my money or embarrassment to friends who may be more serious about their fishing (just being honest). So, I was looking for a quality combo around $100.
The Quest II quality probably can't be beat for the price and the customer service/guarantee for sure can't be beat - nobody offers anything like it. This was shipped (free, of course) in time for vacation. The rod/reel both look/feel great and the included cases made traveling stress-free. Not only did I get compliments on the beautiful rod & large reel, but (more importantly) I caught fish every time I went out!
My only experience before last week was a couple of hours wading in a Colorado river for trout with a friend who showed me the basics. Last week's vacation was on a spring-fed lake in Georgia, fishing from a canoe, so I knew everything would be different. This got me out on the water and catching fish within no time (boatload of bluegill and a young largemouth bass).
Anyone looking for the perfect balance of quality and cost has come to the right place. If you are beginning, on a budget, looking for a spare/gift, or trying a new size/weight, I highly recommend the Quest II. For what I was wanted, this was perfect.

Rated 3 out of 5 Quest II Great until it broke
Bought a 5 weight 8'6" two piece outfit two years ago. Used it quite a bit and treated it very well. Was fishing yesterday and it broke right at the joint after a light tug on the fly after getting it caught in a bush. I called LL Bean and as always their service was awesome. They shipped me another one right away no questions asked. The representative assured me that this wasn't a common problem with these rods so trusting it shouldn't be a concern. The reel on the other hand is cheap and you can strip the plastic arbour nut easily. It is what you would expect for a $30 reel. If I had the time back I would of purchased the rod and upgraded to a better reel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by AndrewB Awesome purchase
I wanted a smaller, lighter rod for the small streams in SE PA, and decided between this and a 7'6" cabelas outfit. This was more expensive, but LL Beans return policy is second to none. Fortunately that won't be an issue. This rod surpassed my expectations and is a great all around package. The reel is a little too big for a 3 weight, but it feels sturdy. You can land dries on a dime, but the rod has enough backbone to throw nymph rigs and small streamers with a little weight (not too far). If you're looking for a smaller rod to get a bigger fight, this is it. I've already caught a good deal of trout with it, waiting to see how it holds up to SMB in the spring.

by Jtmark Not well balanced at all
Looking for a fly rod and reel for my nine-year old grandson, I was excited to find what seemed to be a nice outfit at a nice price.
Individually the components are fine, but they are not well matched. The reel is far too heavy for the 6'6" 3-weight rod I ordered. (The reel I was sent also didn't look like the photo on the Web site. Was I sent a Quest reel rather than a Quest II reel??)
As a result the outfit doesn't balance well at all. I've attached a photo to show how low/close to the reel the balance point is.)
Now I will need to find a different, lighter reel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JabaFats Quest II 6'6" 3-wt
Great rod/reel combo for the price, which means not a "great" rod/reel but much better quality and action than expected. Good looking setup; does not look cheap. Rod is quite sturdy; first fish pulled in was close to 3# and no issues. Reel is smooth with easy to manage drag. Casting distance was as expected for this size rod (20-30 feet) and could be improved by replacing the low quality line. The line and leader that come on the reel are not up to the quality of the rod and reel, but I wouldn't expect top notch line on a combo at this price. Good setup overall. Very pleased.
