áby HotDogJohnny Water on demand
I have not yet used my Vario but have used a friends. We hiked the Appalachians last year and had to haul in our own water. The additional weight made the trek quite a chore. I look forward to using this highly recommended unit and allowing us to pack lighter and purify on demand. I do recommend that you check the details on where you are hiking to identify potential water sources prior to your trip. We once trekked about 7 miles with limited water and then found out that the closest water source was 2 miles away from camp. It made for a long afternoon hike for water.

I bought this after using a friends for many adventures. We never carry water on our river adventures. I've tried many with poor flow, but this gives a real 2+ liters/min. It is easy to pump and the water quality is great. Not for backpacking, it's too large. Perfect for river tripping, hunting, emergency use, tailgate camping etc, We've use these on the Saco, Allagash, Penobscot, Lobster, Chesuncook, etc etc.

Rated 5 out of 5áby GrayGhostn Only filter I'll ever need
If you're looking at purchasing a new filter system, or upgrading for your existing, this is the filter you'll want. It is a bit bulky compared to some, but for 2 people, this filter is the cat's meow! Pumps very fast, great tasting water, screws onto a Nalgene bottle, has more adapters/fittings than needed. I am very happy I finally invested the money into this filter, good quality & worth every dime.

Last summer I bought one of these for me, and for my kids I got the filter that you suck the water through. This device is so much better. You really have to suck hard to get water through the filter. But using this two way pump is a breeze.
We used it while hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. The water tasted great, and we didn't get sick.
My kids have asked for this device.

Rated 2 out of 5áby Newtibourne I expected better quality for the money
I just received my newly purchased Vario today. After cleaning out the charcoal dust by running some water through the filter, I went and prepped it for some long term storage since I wouldn't be using it within the next month. Upon trying to remove the inlet water tube, I managed to pull the inlet water port right off of the filter housing. It's like it was just glued on there and not one solid piece. Thankfully this happened to me right away and not out in the field. I've used Katadyn in the past (Hiker Pro) and have liked their product but I have to admit that this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The only reason this product got 2 stars instead of 1 is because of my previous experience with Katadyn's Hiker Pro but now I will certainly think twice before going with them again. Thankfully, L.L. Bean's customer service was excellent and I will be exchanging this product for a different type of purifier very soon!

Very nice little package. It comes with extra gaskets and O-rings. Cleaning tool for the stone filter, storage bag. Great add-on to any backpack. It beats carring extra water. Just word to the wise, give it a test run before hitting the trail with it. You need to run water though it once or twice to clear out the fine charcoal dust, if not it will end up in your bottle. Have fun with it and happy trails.

Used a couple of times in Maine and NH rivers/streams. Pleasent taste, excellent filter. Would recommend for price point.

Rated 5 out of 5áby LoneWolf365 Katadyn quality, LL Bean backing? Great!
This is a decent filter for one or two people. I am a frequent backpacker, camper, hunter and fisherman. I like to go farther out than the crowd and this filter allows me to reduce weight all around. I can carry one Swiss Gear water bottle and this filter and I have drinking water where ever I go. I've used it fly fishing to pull water right out of the stream to fill my bottle. The filter last a long time if it is just for recreational use.
