Rated 5 out of 5 by JamesCMH Patience needed to break in
This is my 4th pair of Chippewa's (not all the katahdin) and these are some of my favorites. They seem to be better quality than the first pair I bought from LL Bean in 2001. The leather is heavy, well stitched and look like it will last. The soles, which do not sport a deep tread, are great for indoors and walking and are very supportive and comfortable.
The run a bit large - I'm a 10.5 normally and I'm great in a 9.5 EE (wide feet).
Be patient on the break in . The upper are not soft leather and will need at least a half dozen wearings to start to fit you. Mine were very uncomfortable the first 3 times. I've had them for 2 weeks now and they are about 90% broken in to my feet and getting more and more comfortable.
The leather doesn't have a shiny, fake look to it and IMO looks much better than treated leather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by customerfromohio great pair of boots
just bought these at your Freeport store. first of all listen when reviewers say they run big. I wear a 10.5 and bought a 10. the fit is perfect. next allow breakin time. I wore them around the house for 4 or 5 days for a few hours every day. then I wore them around outside doing yardwork. then I finally wore the out to a high school football game. now they have really begun to be comfortable. a truly great pair of boots.

Ive been looking for a good boot and originally got the plain toe version of these.
Both are great but I was partial to the cap toe. Super comfortable out of the in and feels like a sturdy well built boot.
Ordered a half size down and seems to be the right fit. I wear 10 regular shoes, 10.5 in my running shoes, and bought these at 9.5. I think I'm good.
Can't wait for cooler weather to dress these things !!

Rated 5 out of 5 by ChrisMas Great company, potentially great boots
I would like to point how outstanding the LL Bean return policy is. The company is remarkable, in the way that you can actually use their product for years, and in the event that it fails you can return it. Granted i am sure people take advantage of the policy but it is incredible.
I ordered my first pair of these boots and ordered the wrong size. I wore them trying to figure out if the boots were right. They were used when I returned them a week later for a larger size. The service was legendary. They gladly took them back and helped me get the right size.
As far as the boots and build goes. I looked at four pairs, two of which I noticed had loose ends, unclean cuts on the soles, and or overall defective stitching. With that said, they are very comfortable once broken in (break in is tough, make sure to leather oil or conditioner). They seem very durable with thick leather and the look is very classy.
Just make sure you go and try them on before ordering them, and use the socks you plan on wearing with the shoes when trying them on. If you have to order I would go one half size down. Overall great boot, just check stitching also before purchase.

My second pair of boots purchased from LL Bean, and my favorite pair of shoes now! I think they look great with jeans and casual pants.

GR8 boots! My go to for work & play for many years. I have had one cap toe begin to unravel once, in twenty years.
Never had a speed hook or a grommet come loose. Tremendous, near orthopedic levels of ankle support.
I wish ya'll would see fit to make these in an oiled black leather, too.
Bottom line - fantastic boots made & wear like iron. Not too heavy. Handsome as can be. Just get better looking (like you, ya' know?)
In my opinion they beat other "travelers" by "1000 miles", if ya' know what I mean.
Simply cannot be beat. Your' feet will feel very well looked after.

by WonderingWanderer Excellent build quality and comfortable too!
I've only had them for a week, but they've been super comfortable and feel like they'll last me a good long while. My feet are a bit wide and these fit really well without being too snug. Unlike some boots opening isn't difficult to get my foot into, due mainly to the lace holes not going up the shaft too high.
So far, I'm confident I made the right choice!

Overall very high quality boots. This is my second pair that I've purchased. This latest pair was NOT the same as the first pair from about three years ago. The leather is now much darker and has been oiled. Still very good quality for the money. I wear the first pair that is three years old everyday. These boots are very high quality and will last for many years to come. Sizing is very true. I normally wear a size 10 and that is what these are. A little stiff at first, but softens quickly. The soles and heals wear like iron. Hit them with bees wax every now and then and they are almost waterproof for Midwest winters. A word of caution--these boots are slick in the snow / ice since they lack treads. These are great for office casual wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by JesseD Great Boots, Great Service
Measured my feet at exactly 9.5 with a Brannock Device, so I ordered a 9.0 after reading the comments which said to size down, but they were still a bit too large. Gave LL Bean a call, and they exchanged them for an 8.5 no problem, free shipping and everything.
Boots are great quality (I've had a couple pairs of good quality boots before, but these are the best). Heavy, thick, strong leather. Yeah they take a bit of wear to soften up around the ankles, but if you suck it up for a few days they get really comfy. Looking forward to when they start to develop that old/worn look to them.
If you only own one pair of boots, I'd recommend these.
