I purchased these for my husband looking for an alternative to a high quality brand of boots we love that was a little more affordable. I was disappointed to find when we received the boots that they are Chippewa boots, which is a brand we have passed over in the past because the quality and fit are not as good as our favorite brand. If I had known that they were made by Chippewa I wouldn't have purchased them. They are decent boots, but I don't think they would last 10 years like his last pair. Fortunately LL Bean has such a great guarantee you could exchange them if they don't last, but we decided to return them anyway since my husband has slightly narrow feet and they were a little too wide.

I bought these for my son in law for Christmas. I can only tell you that when he got them, I received a picture of him kissing the boots. So I'm guessing they're pretty great.

As a contractor, I needed a comfortable pair of boots and after trying a few others, I've had no need to look elsewhere. I don't remember the break in, so it couldn't have been as bad as some others say. I strip and oil or wax them twice a year, not as often as my drill sergeant would have suggested back in the day, but it has kept them protected and looking good for 10+ years.
Just noticed that the stitching on the right toe is coming loose so I'm headed to the cobbler. Either he can fix 'em or I'll buy a new pair without hesitation.
It is interesting to think about how attached I become to durable leather goods - work gloves, baseball mit, the football of my youth, and boots like these.

Have been eyeing these boots for a few years now and finally pulled the trigger. Absolutely one of the best looking boots I've ever seen. I don't work outside or live in Maine, bought these boots mainly for their appearance to wear with jeans and ended up wearing them all the time in the rain, snow (actually more slush in Atlanta) and they clean right up. A few days to break in properly, especially where the top hits above the ankle area, can be rather tight but it goes away especially with heavy wool socks bunched in that area to pressure them outward.
Extremely pleased and the compliments are plenty.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Jackfre I loved this boot...until
Probably 6 years ago I was in the Freeport store and happened across these boots and scooped them up. Great fit and they were great to wear. Over the years I put, based upon the wear of the soles very little wear on them and did not mistreat them, but the seam over the toe split. It is a fine seam and the leather gave way about 1". Otherwise they are in excellent shape. For the price, I expected to walk the bottoms off these boots. They really were my favorites. As Maine was a part of my business territory I used to shop in the store regularly. I have over the years bought many shoes from LLB and with the exception of these, all have been a good value.
If you are to buy them I strongly recommend the PLAIN TOE version. Had the PT been available when I bought, I would have gone that way. BTW, I found the sole of this boot to be good in that it gave good traction without carrying the outdoors indoors as you would with a Vibram type lugged sole

The leather is very high quality and they feel great to wear after a short break in period. However I'm concerned about the quality of the seams of the soles. The heels are not completely glued to the sole. I haven't returned them yet but we shall see.

Rated 2 out of 5 by CTyardbird great boots, big problem
I work at a boatyard in New England. I am outside everyday, 3+ seasons of the year. I loved these boots, they took a while to break in, but became incredibly comfortable. Unfortunately after being worn in the rain snow and mud, after one winter the sole on my left boot came undone.
I brought the boots to a cobbler to have them fixed, as I said, I loved these boots, they were broken in and I didn't want to return them to LL Bean for a new pair. The cobbler showed me that part of the sole was made of cardboard and probably couldn't be permanently fixed.
I'll leave the judgement to you. Very comfortable boots, but fell apart on me due to shoddy construction. For $220 these boots shouldve lasted me 5 years or more before coming apart like they did.

This is my second pair of these boots. This is a classic design boot that holds up extremely well to abuse. The sole does not have any tread so if you come in and out all day you do not track mud inside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by JamesC Best Value Around!
I recently gave up my LL Bean Engineer boots after 20 years of hard use. Not because they were no longer serviceable (they still have a lot of life left) but because at 61 years old I need the cushion insoles found in the new boot. Let me be honest here ? have owned some high end boots in my day, costing two to three times what the Bean boot costs. But as far as usefulness, durability and manly style they don?t hold a candle to these rugged US made boots. There is not a better value on the market today.
