I purchased the Maine Guide Briefcase for my husband about 5 years ago and he was very happy with the product - held up nicely, waterproof, plenty of room for laptop and files. I ordered another one for his birthday last month and he was disappointed in the quality - it looked worn out and the leather was discolored. I called customer service and ordered another one and sent the first one back. My husband has been using the new briefcase for the past few weeks and he feels the overall quality of it is still not as good as the one purchased several years ago.

I love the material and workmanship, but I prefer the same with more space. Yes, there are some waxed canvas/cotton rucksacks here on the site, but none that offer specific laptop protection.

Got this bag a week ago and love it so far! Great looking, tons of usable pockets, easy to get things like computers and paperwork in and out of, and the apparent quality is excellent.

Excellent construction, looks great... but totally impractical for actual use... the inside pockets are too small wont hold check book, phone etc....and just dump everything out... Just got mine as a gift and will be returning it asap.... love the look.. but need it to work.... Designer obviously never field tested the product.

Exactly what I was looking for. The briefcase looks good, has ample room, very high quality materials, leather, brass, waxed canvas, etc. The strap is sturdy and comfortable, and constructed to sit easily on the shoulder for carrying. Excellent value.

Rated 2 out of 5 by WyoJake First one ripped . . . second one did 6 mos. later
While I like the functionality, size and looks of the Maine Guide Briefcase, it has not stood up to the durability challenge whatsoever. I carry the briefcase probably 2 - 3 times a week, and the first briefcase began ripping at the seams about 6 months in. So, I returned it - only for the same thing to happen. I love LL Bean and generally stand by their products - but this needs to go back once again, and I plan on trying an alternative product, perhaps the Commuter Briefcase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by padm68a A definite winner
The quality of this case, for the price, is exceptional. I will be passing it down to my son when I retire. I have had quite a number of my coworkers ask where they can get one since it is of much higher quality and durable than the typical ballistic nylon laptop cases other staffers shoulder around.

Rated 3 out of 5 by dknutt Inner small-items pockets are useless
The inner pockets intended to secure small objects are absolutely useless, because (1) nothing will fit in them and (2) there wouldn't be enough of them, even if they actually worked. In my old briefcase (unfortunately no longer made) I used to carry 3 pens, a memory stick, my sunglasses, my checkbook, a digital voice recorder, a calculator or mp3 player, packets of wet wipes... misc. other small items. NONE of this stuff will fit in the LL Bean briefcase except the three pens. I found a total of five eyeglass cases in my dresser drawer - NOT ONE would fit in what "looks like" the eyeglass pocket. I also searched online, and could not find an eyeglass case that small. Maybe the pocket's intended for pre-smartphone cell phones - in which case equally useless. I find this kind of inattention to detail in what otherwise seems like a well-made product absolutely infuriating.

Rated 3 out of 5 by MrBigglesworth Two design gripes...
This is a good-looking case, and the materials and workmanship are fine, but I found two problems with the design that annoyed me enough to make me return it.
First, the sewn inner pockets for holding small items are badly sized. None of them is deep enough to hold a checkbook, and I hate having to dig in the bottom of a compartment for my checkbook. The shallow pockets, presumably for holding credit cards, are a bad joke as cards held there would inevitably get dumped if the briefcase is held upside down. It would be nice to have a zippered inner pocket so that thumbdrives, access cards, etc. would never fall out.
In order to even get to those inner pockets, which for me would be the most used part of the briefcase, you have to unsnap the snaps on the handle. Meh.
Seems like a briefcase designed by a person who doesn't use a briefcase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by padm68a Excellent Briefcase
Run away from the common ballistic nylon and get a case you can use and pass on in your will when your work days are over. This case is very well made, durable, and conceals contemporary features in a classic look.
