Rated 3 out of 5 by Chemist13 Good - Could have been Great
I purchased this fly rod and reel outfit for my first attempt at steelhead fly fishing. I thought it would also be good for carp and light saltwater fly fishing too. I haven't had a chance to take it out on the water just yet, but the rod and reel look to be very high quality and have a great look and feel to them, especially for the economical price. I would have given this outfit a 5-star rating, except for a couple of issues described below.
First, the online description and pictures clearly show that a rod tube comes with the outfit with no accommodation for a reel. I did receive a rod tube and a rubberized reel sleeve. However, the latest paper catalog listing for this item clearly states: "Quest II Fly Rod and reel-on-rod case," which is what I was hoping/expecting to receive. I thought/hoped the online listing may have been in error; however, it was the catalog listing that was in error. So after receiving the item, I immediately had to order a reel-on-rod case so I could travel locally and fish with the reel already on the rod. Fair enough for this catalog error on LL Bean's part. However, I think most anglers would rather have a reel-on-rod case instead of a rod tube. Therefore, why don't you think about including a better case in the future and increase the price of the outfit a few bucks to cover your costs and have happier customers.
The second issue was more bothersome to me. The description of this outfit states: "just tie on a fly, and you're ready to fish." Almost, but not quite. On the outfit I received, the leader was wound around the reel, as I expected. When I unwrapped the leader to have a look at the fly line and knots, I discovered that the leader was attached to a thick, ~10" or so long, monofilament line that had been attached onto the fly line with a really nice, high quality, good-looking, knot. However, instead of having a perfection loop present, the other end of the thick monofilament line was attached to the loop on the leader by a single simple overhand knot tied at about the middle of the length! This rig was obviously not ready to just tie on a fly and fish! After I untied the overhand knot in the monofilament, the thick monofilament was "bent" with a big kink in the middle. So I had to cut off the line in the middle. The shorter piece of monofilament still attached to the fly line was still sufficiently long for me to tie on a perfection loop and the rig is now useable. However, I would have much rather had a permanent welded-on loop like you get with most commercial fly lines these days. Since this rig is intended for beginners to intermediate fly fishermen, the simplicity of a permanent loop on the fly line would probably be much more appreciated.
Again, with a reel-on-rod case instead of a rod tube and a simpler fly line end without the overhand knot in the middle, this outfit would have been great instead of just average.

I am extremely pleased with all my purchases. I will continue purchasing through them. I really wish that other businesses would model theirs after LL Bean's.
