Rated 4 out of 5 by TexasDallas Very warm and soft
This is a very warm union suit. Perfect for winter wear.
I do love this union suit, the cotton/wool mix is perfect for cold weather camping. I use this as my sleepwear. If I have to get out of my sleeping bag in the middle of the night I don't freeze to death.
Has one problem, the button holes are too large. If laying down or sleeping the buttons always pop open. I had to sew the button holes smaller. I'm a average (medium) size man the neck is a little tight. I just don't use the top button.
The best one on the market, hands down.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Plwyman Very heavy, warm, but gapes down the front.
I love LL Bean dual layer River Driver shirts in winter and own about a dozen. It never ceases to amaze me how much warmth for weight they provide. I had hoped their union suit would be of a similar design.
Unfortunately, I think the balancing of the individual elements is mismatched in this garment. I found the fabric to be much heavier than my River Driver shirts which makes it super warm but also somewhat stiff.
Another concern is gaping. The buttons are spaced 4" apart so the stiffness of the fabric causes significant gaping at rest and even wider gaping when bending or stretching. The buttons didn't spontaneously come undone, as some reviewers have noted in the past, but I might wonder if the wide spacing contributes to this phenomenon, as well.
Worn as a primary layer I assume most folks want a union suit to be close-fitting so they can layer a shirt or sweater on top. Since it's heavy in weight, others might just want to wear it under their work coat. In cold weather, however, both the stiffness of this item as well as the gaping issue would seem to work against either approach.
In the end I returned this item. Even if the weight were something I required there's no way to change the spacing of the buttons. I'm not sure if anyone makes a union suit with a zipper but it seems like a reasonable idea. In lieu of this, they should likely space the buttons at 3" max which is actually a bit closer than the average dress shirt. Just an observation.

Very warm and comfortable. The winter in Wolfeboro New Hampshire was cold but this kept it at bay.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Grasshopper1 Fell apart in less than two months! Disappointing
I bought this union suit in November for the winter. After about a month and 2-3 washes I noticed that holes had started to develop in the fabric around the crotch and surrounding areas. At first I thought it may be just an isolated indecent. After another two weeks and one more wash the flap on the back developed a tear/hole of about five inches across! Shortly after that the seams started to come apart from the second button at the bottom ALL THE WAY to the crotch. It just started to disintegrate. Needless to say, I can no longer use it. 50 dollars down the drain.
I am not a heavy person (157 lb.), or hard on my clothes. I wore this mainly while sitting in the backyard or shopping. No heavy activity (I'm 58!).
I should also mention that from the beginning, button holes were SO LARGE that it would not stay buttoned up in the back OR lower front. My wife actually had to re-sew every button hole and still, after one more wash they started to unbutton again! VERY DISAPPOINTED! I expect better from L.L.Bean.

Ordered the one piece union suit (long underwear) - 50% wool, 40% cotton, and 10% nylon. Absolutely love it. I primarily got it for sleeping and lounging around the house in the evenings relaxing before bed. I initially ordered one, and will probably order a couple more just to have around and keep packed in a weekend or overnight bag, and one with my camping gear. I live in the Northern Panhandle of Idaho... chilly!

Rated 5 out of 5 by mtnman1819 Great piece of gear
I have used every type of base layer imaginable. Now I know why the old loggers and workmen of days gone by chose this design. The combo of wool/cotton/nylon breathes very well. To me, this is key. I can stay out all day in sub zero temps and be very comfortable. Even during high exertion (snowshoeing/ shoveling roofs) I'm able to perfectly vent this piece. I never write reviews and I'm thrilled about this piece. Great job L.L Bean.

I just ordered my fourth pair. I bet the first is twenty years old. Three pairs just get me from one laundry day to the next. Now I'll have a pair to wear while the others are in the wash.
