Rated 4 out of 5 by HikesforHounds Please make a longer version of this coat
I do like this coat/jacket. It's hard to find a waterproof/resistant, waxed jacket that is down filled and doesn't snag briars or get damaged in the woods. I like that it is not form fitting so I can use the pockets and put my hands in underneath. However, it does need to be longer. The cold air billows underneath and makes my stomach cold as I walk. Enough length to cover the posterior would do the trick. I have cinched it in as far as I can along the bottom edge (I have an athletic build) but it's still drafty. Ideally this coat would come in a posterior covering length plus a mid thigh or knee length and have a detachable hood to keep the weather off my neck, since it is meant for wet winter days. I would love a detachable faux fur edging on the hood to keep my face protected too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by VtGirlinMA Super Warm Hunting Coat-love the Lodin Green!
I have owned the wax cotton vest for over 5 years now (in Navy-love it!) and within the last year purchased the waxed cotton jacket. Like the vest, the jacket is super warm, I have worn only a light shirt under this is sub freezing weather and stayed toasty! Like any waxed cotton product, it does collect lint, but this has decreased over time. I love that the sleeves are long. As an FYI-the sleeves are long so that when you hold a hunting bow or a rifle, your wrists still stay warm! I don't hunt but wear this when training dogs-the longer sleeves are helpful as they keep my wrists covered when giving hand signals in freezing weather. The soft fleece lining in the hand warmer pockets is a plus! I have found that this jacket fits true to size. I also wear this when running errands and just cuff up the sleeves. I have also recieved many compliments from more fashionable folks. It beats the price of Barbour, too!

Love this coat, it's super warm and really comfortable. And nice looking to boot. I am 5'4", 117 pounds and the small fit perfectly.

This jacket is a winner in my opinion. The 650-fill down insulation makes it warm. The supple waxed layer is a huge help in combatting rain/snow. FYI, I am 5'9" and about 148 lbs. the women's large is a perfect fit. Jacket fits well over a sweater without being boxy. The slightly longer sleeve length is perfect for someone as tall as I am. Little touches such as the contrasting binding at the cuffs, and the tone-on-tone embroidered LL Bean logo at the bottom of the left pocket lend an overall "touch of class." This jacket has helped take the sting out of winter in NJ.

Rated 3 out of 5 Too Long in Torso for this Coat
I love the look of this coat and its warmth. Unfortunately I had to return it because it was not long enough. I am very long in the torso and although I like the bomber look, it is just not practical for this very practical coat.
Hope Bean will make a slightly longer version, mid bum at least!

I love this coat! Very well made, looks like it would be very warm. But had to send it back because it was too short. I am only 5'5" and short waisted. The arm length was great though. Wish you would make it longer !

Rated 5 out of 5 by Trainspotter Warm? Yes. Yes it is.
I got this jacket last January when the temps dipped down to around Zero and stayed there. Thought I would never be warm again... until I got this jacket. It got me through last winter and I have worn it this year already. One of the main complaints from other reviewers is the "boxy" shape, and since the LL Bean description says its "slightly fitted", I think that is a reasonable complaint because I can't see how anyone could see it as "fitted" at all. As warm as it is, I still want to be able to put a layer under it, so I am pleased that there is room for that. I am usually a size 14, or XL. I got this jacket in XL and its a wee bit large but it's perfect for me. I often wear a thick hoody under it when I'm out walking. If you"re not used to a hefty thick coat, it might be a surprise but this coat, while very attractive in a timeless way, is not "fashion apparel". The other common complaint is that it's short. Maybe one day LL Bean will produce a longer version, but for now study the photos and description very carefully before you order it, it is not designed to cover your bum. If you have a really long torso, you will notice it more I'm sure, but I have a really short torso and long legs so its perfect for me. Another common complaint is that the arms are long. If you have ever reached up to scrape snow off your car and had your jacket sleeve ride up to your elbow while snow is filling your sleeve, then you will understand why the sleeves on this jacket are a bit longer. It's a tough no nonsense working jacket designed for hard weather. The patch pockets are one of my favorite features, super roomy and handy with full size snaps that are really easy to open or close even with gloves on. As is the heavy duty zipper with that nice big ring pull. And the handwarmer pockets are sooo warm and snug. I won't buy a coat if it doesn't have an inside pocket and this has a roomy one with a zipper for added security. The wax on the cotton is I suppose what causes that distinctive smell, but it has either faded over time, or I just don't notice it anymore, not that it ever bothered me to begin with. It does pick up lint but I think it picks up less now than when it was brand new. I took the advice of another reviewer and use damp hands to wipe the lint off. Works like a charm. I love it too because it's made from all natural materials. The bottom line though is that it is warm, incredibly warm, and it blocks the wind amazingly well. I expect it will be the only winter coat I will ever need.

Rated 4 out of 5 by WinstonsMom Nice Jacket - but
Based on other reviews I went up a size to a Medium. When it arrived arm length perfect, torso way to big. Reordered a small not that much difference except an odor that wasn't apparent in the Medium but this one set my allergies aflame. The torso is too short when lifting your arms over your head the jacket rides up and would be constantly pulling it back down. Hey Bean bring back the women barn coats of yesteryear with the arm gussets because they were working coats for us outdoor working girls. As for this jacket, ahhh, not so much. I sent both back since I couldn't justify the $$ and would never be happy with the overall length of the jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by pjh0o Very warm, wish LL Bean would make a long version
This jacket is very warm and I can tell it is going to wear very nicely over time. However, whenever I wear it I am very warm on top but cold on the bottom. I hope LL Bean makes a knee-length version for next winter (without a cinched waist -- those look bad).
