Rated 5 out of 5 by Trainspotter Warm? Yes. Yes it is.
I got this jacket last January when the temps dipped down to around Zero and stayed there. Thought I would never be warm again... until I got this jacket. It got me through last winter and I have worn it this year already. One of the main complaints from other reviewers is the "boxy" shape, and since the LL Bean description says its "slightly fitted", I think that is a reasonable complaint because I can't see how anyone could see it as "fitted" at all. As warm as it is, I still want to be able to put a layer under it, so I am pleased that there is room for that. I am usually a size 14, or XL. I got this jacket in XL and its a wee bit large but it's perfect for me. I often wear a thick hoody under it when I'm out walking. If you"re not used to a hefty thick coat, it might be a surprise but this coat, while very attractive in a timeless way, is not "fashion apparel". The other common complaint is that it's short. Maybe one day LL Bean will produce a longer version, but for now study the photos and description very carefully before you order it, it is not designed to cover your bum. If you have a really long torso, you will notice it more I'm sure, but I have a really short torso and long legs so its perfect for me. Another common complaint is that the arms are long. If you have ever reached up to scrape snow off your car and had your jacket sleeve ride up to your elbow while snow is filling your sleeve, then you will understand why the sleeves on this jacket are a bit longer. It's a tough no nonsense working jacket designed for hard weather. The patch pockets are one of my favorite features, super roomy and handy with full size snaps that are really easy to open or close even with gloves on. As is the heavy duty zipper with that nice big ring pull. And the handwarmer pockets are sooo warm and snug. I won't buy a coat if it doesn't have an inside pocket and this has a roomy one with a zipper for added security. The wax on the cotton is I suppose what causes that distinctive smell, but it has either faded over time, or I just don't notice it anymore, not that it ever bothered me to begin with. It does pick up lint but I think it picks up less now than when it was brand new. I took the advice of another reviewer and use damp hands to wipe the lint off. Works like a charm. I love it too because it's made from all natural materials. The bottom line though is that it is warm, incredibly warm, and it blocks the wind amazingly well. I expect it will be the only winter coat I will ever need.

Rated 4 out of 5 by WinstonsMom Nice Jacket - but
Based on other reviews I went up a size to a Medium. When it arrived arm length perfect, torso way to big. Reordered a small not that much difference except an odor that wasn't apparent in the Medium but this one set my allergies aflame. The torso is too short when lifting your arms over your head the jacket rides up and would be constantly pulling it back down. Hey Bean bring back the women barn coats of yesteryear with the arm gussets because they were working coats for us outdoor working girls. As for this jacket, ahhh, not so much. I sent both back since I couldn't justify the $$ and would never be happy with the overall length of the jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by pjh0o Very warm, wish LL Bean would make a long version
This jacket is very warm and I can tell it is going to wear very nicely over time. However, whenever I wear it I am very warm on top but cold on the bottom. I hope LL Bean makes a knee-length version for next winter (without a cinched waist -- those look bad).

I like this coat because it is not "fitted" or "slightly fitted" as so many other women's coats are. There is plenty of room in the arms and shoulders, and does not tug across the upper back when I put my arms forward. It is very comfy! The arms are very long on this coat but can easily be cuffed under. I am 5 feet tall, so the length fits me fine, however long torso or waisted women may find this coat too short for them. There is a residual odor on this coat due to the waxing of the material, but it fades in time. I sprayed mine with Febreeze and hung it outside to dry, and it is fine now. Heavy duty brass zipper is a plus, and the side pockets are very warm for cold hands. Rain beads off of it nicely and the collar is nice and soft. Not a "pretty" coat but a great functional coat for the outdoorsey type of gal! I really like it!

Warmest, toughest coat I've ever owned. Wish I had bought it years ago. I bought a medium because I have long arms, I'm pleased to report the sleeves are exactly the right length and don't ride up while working. I'm very slim so the body is a bit big, but that just means I can wear a sweater underneath if need be.
Very satisfied, thank you Bean.

Very warm, very functional and true to size. Can be worn for work or play. Sleeves a bit long but can be cuffed easily. Does show lint.
Worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by BunnyHo The warmest coat you will every own!
A friend recommended this coat....I was doubtful it would live up to the billing she gave it but I have to admit this coat is fantastic! If you spend a lot of time outside, in barn, on the farm or doing outside country sports...this is the coat for you!!!! On top of all that, it's cute too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Lovinglife1 Warm, Great outdoor working coat
I received this as a gift and it is just perfect for outdoor work or horseback riding. You don't have to worry about snagging it on something or getting it dirty. It is heavy duty and can take the abuse. It is boxy looking, but that is because of the style that it is. It does not look sexy on by any means. But it does do its job as a warm, working coat. I usually wear large shirts through LL bean. The Jacket I got is a large and it has some room to wear a sweatshirt underneath. My husband likes it so much , he wants one too. Ladies if you live on a ranch then this jacket is for you!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Foxcroft Warmer than ever!
This is the warmest jacket I have ever owned and am looking forward to using it to horseback ride--the length is perfect for it. I am 5'5" and 130 lbs. and ordered a small in the brown and it is a good fit. I probably could have worn an XS as well, but the small is not too big and I can fit a sweater underneath. The sleeves are long, but that doesn't bother me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ilove2camp Keeps me Warm - Even in -23 degree F weather !!!
I bought this coat at an outlet store. I thought it was black, but apparently it is green... It is VERY dark, and looks black, not green. The negative: It attracts every speck of hair and fuzz - it doesn't look great. However, I still love it. The positives: The sleeves are finally long enough for me. I am only 5'4, but I have a hard time finding sleeves that cover my wrists. I wore it two days ago when it was MINUS 23 DEGREES and WINDY - I was toasty warm under my jacket (my legs were frozen though). I kind of wish it had a hood, that would have been really nice; especially if it was removable. The body length could be a tad bit longer. It covers me well, but I wouldn't mind it a couple of inches longer. It is the best purchase I have ever made for a jacket . I finally have a warm coat - it keeps me warm and happy :)
