Rated 2 out of 5 by Dana1949 Best affordable boat shoe that lasts!
The reason I gave this a fair rating is because I have been wearing boat shoes since 1970! I was in the US COAST GUARD and these shoes were required over military boots as not to mark teak or fiberglass decks, and yes when new they may be uncomfortable without socks. Best way to get them broke in I have found is to get them soaking wet this allows leather to soften, dry naturally when dry apply liberal coating of NEETS OIL! I have purchased these from LL BEAN over the original manufacturer since introduced and wear them for dress and play just wish they were made as a golf shoe with grips. Technically this is a 5 star product!

Mr. Bean's Casco Bay Boat Mocs are my personal favorites. These Briar/Brown examples are my sixth pair! I have and have had Sperry and Sebago boat shoes?no others can match Bean's Casco Bay. Some reviewers have reported these run large, but I don't share that opinion?unless one is comparing them to Sperry Top Siders, which, to me run very narrow and a bit short. I find there is no break-in for Casco Bay Mocs?comfortable right out of the box.The color combination of waxy briar/brown is really nice?maybe a just bit darker than pictured. The leather is thick and soft. As for me, Casco Bay Mocs are a win-win?can't seem to get enough!

Rated 2 out of 5 by KalahariNik Incredibly painful
I want to love these shoes, I really do, I've been a fan of LL Bean since my childhood -- those early years of receiving the catalog with the cool holiday covers and neat clothing battle tests in the hard conditions of Maine -- but these shoes just break my heart.
I love the look of the shoe - they are a handsome shoe and appear to be well constructed and on that basis I'd give these shoes a 4. But the pain....oh my God the pain!
Here's the break in process I used:
First Day - Walked in the shoes 5 miles, destroyed my feet. Came home, soaked them in warm water and then walked an additional 2 miles.
Second Day - Walked in the dry shoes for 4 miles, still lots of foot pain. Soaked them in warm water and walked an additional mile.
Third Day - Walked in the dry shoes for 4 miles, starting to feel a little better.
Fourth Day - Walked in the dry shoes for 3 miles, the shoe is starting to take shape, but my feet are pretty mangled.
I am suprised that it is taking so long to break these in. Again, I want to love these shoes, but I think I'm going to take a pair of Sperry Gold Cups for a spin and see how those feel.

Rated 2 out of 5 by WScottMac Should come with band-aids and AquaPhor
These are handsome boat mocs made with good quality leather and nice soles. Somehow, they've managed to sew them up with very small barbed wire :( I've worn boat mocs my whole life. I run barefoot, sail and whitewater guide barefoot, or in river sandals. These shredded my (pretty tough, callused) feet. I wet them down, and walked around with socks on the first time. Still bad. I found the offending stitches, sandpapered them, saddle soaped the whole shoe, inside and out, rubbed them down with mink oil. Still bad. Rubbed AquaPhor on rough spots and my feet. Still bad. I'm astounded at how LL Bean can make such an uncomfortable shoe. I love my other blutcher and ranger moccasins, boots, etc. Skip these, unless you intend to wear with hiking socks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NateF Better fit & price than Sperry Top-Siders
Love these, I bought the classic looking "canyon" colour. Great for dress casual outings and boating of course. I have slightly wide feet and thought I would need to buy wide fit or go up 1/2-1 size in the regular fit but that was not the case. They are true to size and there is no need to adapt your sizing. Any other brand of boat shoes I have tried on before have fit very narrow but these are nice and comfortable with or without socks, though I would not recommend anything thicker than a typical cotton sock but that is to be expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by VAFlyfisher540 Best Boat Shoe!
After going through two pairs of Sperry Topsiders in five years I was looking for a replacement. I was considering upgrading to the more expensive Sperry Gold Cups when I saw the Casco Bays. After reading through the reviews I was at a loss for what size to wear but I went true to size (10 1/2 for me) and I'm glad I did. Right out of the box they fit perfectly. It should be noted I'm wearing these with no socks so you might consider going a half size bigger if you're planning on wearing socks. Also reading the reviews I was a little leery of the construction of these shoes compared to the Sperrys I was used to, for those of you in the same place as me, worry not!! These are the most comfortable, easiest to break in pair of boat shoes I've ever owned and I've had a pair consistently since high school. Right out of the box they were comfortable, no running or chafing anywhere. These shoes have a quality construction that's immediately apparent and I personally really like the look of this leather compared to the shinier almost plastic look that some have. Also the insole L.L. Bean uses is superior to other brands. It doesn't go all the way through the shoe, probably 3/4, but it's one piece and seems to not be going anywhere so far! For my money these are the best boat shoes out there from now on!

Rated 5 out of 5 by averyloyalcustomer Simply The Best Boat Shoe
Purchased a pair a year ago and just received a second pair for "going to Church on Sunday". I've tried all boat shoes available from the name brands and ALL more expensive than these boat shoes. The best feature is the ability to simply step into the shoe; I do not need to wrangle with the back of the shoe to pull over my heel. In my opinion, there is no better boat shoe for the price...hand-sewn. Never, ever have had an issue wearing barefoot...I find simply bizarre any review comment about this shoe "chaffing the foot to the point of bleeding"...and I am NOT a L.L. Bean employee...wish I was...

Rated 1 out of 5 by NavySailor No Good for Bare Feet
have worn Sperry classic leather topsiders for decades. Bought these to save money. Tongue (top part that goes over top of foot and under the top lacing) of these are NOT the same as the Sperry shoe - the tongue is NOT one piece. This shoe has an added, separate piece sewn across, under the top where the laces are tied. This seam chafes the foot to the point of bleeding. I should have heeded the numerous other comments from previous buyers. If you wear these like I had hoped to (bare feet), you'll probably regret it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by BoiseBoy Very comfortable, navy color darker than expected
These are great shoes and very comfortable out of the box, pretty much no breaking in required. The sizing is a bit large, so I would recommend sizing down 0.5 from your sneaker size or even 1 size down if you plan on going sockless.
From my experience, the navy leather was darker than the color shown on the picture, almost to the point of being black. In addition, the white soles have a tendency to get dirty and acquire scuff marks on the sides, which can be somewhat difficult to remove.
But otherwise these are really comfortable, tasteful, high-quality boat shoes. Definitely would buy again!

Rated 2 out of 5 by 47yrbeaner Very nice, but left shoe larger than right
Through a mishap in shipping, I ended up with two pairs of these boat shoes. In both pairs the left shoe was larger than the right one which fit normally. I returned one and kept the other as I needed boat shoes right then.
I tried using an insole liner, but that did not solve the problem. I've not had this problem with a number of pairs of LL Bean shoes and boots. Perhaps it's just a fluke in the manufacturing of one batch of these. Otherwise they seem perfectly fine. I've since returned the second pair with a second note pointing out the discrepancy.
